Rue

The drive continues in silence, but my mind won’t stop replaying that night. The man was lying in a pool of his own blood and my husband was standing over him.

My stomach clenches. I wrap my arms around myself and squeeze, trying to hold back the nausea twisting inside me.

“Are you alright?” Claire asks, her British accent sharper than usual.

I nod slowly, not trusting my voice. “I think so. I just…” I hesitate, then force the words out. “Do you know if Alessandro really killed that man?”

Claire doesn’t blink. “Of course, he did. Apart from the fact that he stole from the family, that man was a murderer and a repeat rapist. He assaulted one of our staff and nearly killed her, in our own home. He deserved to die.”

Her words hit me but strangely, the nausea in my gut starts to ease.

“How… how many people did he hurt?” I whisper.

“Twelve women and three little girls, all under ten.” Claire exhales slowly. “Honestly, he was a waste of skin, He didn’t deserve to breathe, let alone see

Rue“How do you like your steak?” he asks, flipping through the menu casually.Did he even hear my answer? Or he is just pretending not to hear. When I don’t respond, he glances up. “You like steak, don’t you?”“I do. Medium rare,” I reply.“Good. I like medium rare too,” he says, offering a faint nod of approval.I wait, expecting him to say something, anything about what I asked for earlier. But instead, the silence just stretches between us.The waitress walks over and takes our order. Still, nothing. The table feels too quiet.“Have you gotten an engagement dress?” he asks suddenly.“They’re choosing it for me.” I shrug. “I don’t really care.”“You should be in charge of your own clothes. That way, you can wear something you’re actually comfortable in.”“Whatever they choose, I’ll make it work,” I say flatly. When he stays quiet, I finally push.“What was the point of asking me what I wanted if you had no intention of giving it?” I ask, folding my arms tightly across my chest.“Ju

Rue “No one picks the first bridal dress they try on,” Celeste remarks, crossing her arms as she leans back in her chair. “I think it’s alright. It’s pretty,” I say softly, still staring at my reflection in the mirror. The dress is fitted with delicate floral lace, hugging my body like it was sewn with me in mind. It climbs to the neck in a sculpted frame but cuts into a sharp, dramatic V at the chest, a contradiction of modest and bold. “I love it,” I murmur, a small smile tugging at my lips. “Wait until you try it with the veil,” Claire chimes in, stepping closer. She lifts the soft tulle and carefully pins it in place behind my hair. I glance back at the mirror and my breath catches “It’s perfect. I don’t think I want to try anything else,” I say, finality in my voice.Claire tilts her head hesitantly. “Are you sure?” I can hear the doubt in her voice even though she tries to hide it. She thinks I’m settling. “I’m sure,” I say, giving a small nod. “There’s a good chance yo

Rue“This isn’t as easy as it seems. The story is… eh. . .more complicated than it looks,” I begin, trying to explain.“Calm down,” she says, rising to her feet. I watch as she walks to the drawer, pulls out a glass, and a bottle of water.“Here,” she says, handing them to me.I accept the bottle, twist it open, and drink in silence. “Side note,” she adds, her tone firm, “never accept an open drink from anyone, especially when there is no supervision. Is that clear?”I nod.She narrows her eyes, locking onto mine. “Mrs. Vanilli, I’m not the enemy. In fact, I’m here to make sure all of this either disappears from history or gets buried well enough. Understand?”I take a deep breath. “Alright. What do you want to know?”“I want to know what happened that night.”I pause, gathering my thoughts. “My father was broke. The deadline to pay my school fees was less than twenty-four hours away, and I hadn’t even paid a deposit. I was desperate. So… I did things I wouldn’t normally do.”“What k

Rue’s POVOh, God.The first thing I feel as soon as I open my eyes is a throbbing pain behind my eyes, I press my fingers gently to my temples, massaging in slow circles. What the hell happened last night?I force myself to sit up, wincing as my stomach clenches and lets out a low growl.Right. I didn’t eat dinner.“You’re awake.” Alessandro’s voice cuts through the haze, pulling my attention toward him.“Yes,” I murmur, my voice raspy. “Um… do you know what happened last night?”He smiles softly, almost as if he is amused, then casually picks up his cufflinks. I blink, I don’t know what’s more surprising, the rare curve of a smile on Alessandro’s lips, or the fact that he’s still here at seven in the morning. Most days, he’s long gone before five.“You had fun. That’s all that matters,” he says, fastening the cuffs of his shirt with deliberate ease. Then, without ceremony, he grabs his phone… and his gun.Even after months, I still haven’t gotten used to that the ever-present weapo

Alessandro’s POV“Lock the door behind you,” he says.I do, like I always do.Obedience to my father is muscle memory by now, trained into me like a fucking dog. It’s pathetic, but it’s my life. The only one he’s ever allowed me to live.“Son, please. Sit.”I drop into the leather chair across from him, back straight, jaw tight. That’s the thing about my father the name whispered like a curse in half the city, His manner is flawless, he uses all the right words. Smiles at beggars, dotes on children, donates to the church and gives just enough light to mask the stench of blood. If he thinks playing saint buys forgiveness for a lifetime of evil, I hope he chokes on the irony.“The wedding,” he says, folding his hands over his desk, “you know it’s for your own good.”“For my good?” I say flatly. “How?”“I’m helping you, son.” He leans forward just slightly. “You already signed the certificate. I’m just. . making it official.”I lean back, watching him carefully. There is a spark in his e
