While my father continued screaming at me, I merely ignored them as I walked away.

Melissa ran up to me. “You’re going to regret making an enemy of your family, Elara.”

I rolled my eyes at her as I finally entered the car.

In the car, I noticed Tony staring at me through the window every five seconds.

“Tony, do you have something to say?” I finally asked, catching his eyes in the mirror.

“I just wanted to make sure you’re all right.” He said, stiffly.

“I’m completely fine.” I snapped.

He didn’t say anything as he continued driving.

“I’m sorry. I’m just a bit on edge. I have dealt with a lot today. You saw it firsthand: first Vivienne and now people who are supposed to be my family. I guess I just always thought they could change. It’s all just overwhelming, but at the same time, I’m happy I stood up to them. I feel… lighter.”

He nodded. “If he wasn’t your father, he would have lost his hand.”

He really was a man of few words.

“Thanks for that earlier. I appreciate you stepping in.” I gave him a small smile.

We drove home in a comfortable silence.

When I got home, Rose took my bag as usual as she followed me to my room.

“Ma’am, are you alright? You look exhausted.”

I yawned. I was very tired.

“I am a bit tired. I might take a short nap before having dinner. I’ll take it from here, Rose. Just please make sure I’m not disturbed.”

She nodded and walked off.

At the intersection to the hallway of my room, I bumped into Cassian, like I walked smack into him.

“S..sorry.” I said, trying to hold back a yawn as he steadied me.

His hand rested on my waist before pulling it back.

“Are you alright?”

I nodded as I walked to my room. I just threw my clothes in different corners and crashed into bed.

I was that exhausted.

I woke up around 7 pm. I felt rested, but I was still a bit tense. I had Cassian’s loving Mother to thank for that.

I walked straight to my canvas as I got to painting. If I painted, I would feel better.

I had no idea if what I was feeling was fear, anger, or frustration, but I knew one thing for sure. I was tired of being treated as a pawn for my parents, I was tired of being treated as a baby breeder for Vivienne.

I put down my brush as I looked at my now filled canvas. I liked this.

I had finally managed to paint something tangible.

It expressed everything I was feeling.

I smiled at my progress.

My pieces were coming together nicely.

I had four ready now. I looked around and saw there were only three. Huh?

Where was the last one? I had wrapped four, and this one I just finished should have made it five, but one was missing.

I searched my room, but I didn’t find it. It was a huge painting. It shouldn’t be hard to miss.

“Ma’am, can I come in?” Rose peeked her head in as I paused what I was doing. She was holding a tray of food.

“Is that for me?” I asked, smiling at her.

Rose had really been nice to me since I got here. She was the only one who treated me like a person. Of course, I had told her to call me by my name, but I guess she just couldn’t

“Yes.” She walked in as she dropped the tray on the bed.

“Did someone take one of my paintings?” I asked her.

“Oh, Mr. Rooke said he wanted to purchase one of them. I thought he already informed you. I had it placed in his study already.”

Cassian bought one of my paintings? Why?

“Is there a problem, ma’am? I can bring it back if you’d like.”

“No, it’s alright.”

Although I appreciated the effort, I didn’t like him going through my paintings. That was invasive.

I guess he probably saw them when I placed them in the garden to catch some light.

I needed to see him anyway. I needed to talk to him about his mother. He needed to get her off my back because I couldn’t handle her anymore.

I wolfed down the food, since I didn’t have any lunch.

I decided to shower before going down to look for him.

I sat in front of my mirror blow-drying my hair as I hummed. I was, well, in a good mood.

I mean, yes, Vivienne ruined my day, but I still ended it by standing up to my parents. I was very proud of that.

When I was done, I left my room.

I thought about going to his study but decided against it. I didn’t want to be called a snoop.

I’ll just ask Rose.

As I made my way downstairs, I heard noises from the garden.

Maybe that was where he was. I was sure he was with Celeste.

I saw them before they saw me.

They were talking.

I watched them. They were always so close.

I opened my mouth to speak when I froze up at the sight in front of me.

Cassian and Celeste were kissing. I wasn’t hallucinating. I didn’t pull away early enough to not see it.

It was there, right there in front of me. They were kissing.

And Cassian didn’t seem to be pushing her away.

I smiled at the note. This was cute.I cleared my throat as I tried standing up.The wounds on my feet didn’t hurt as much anymore. There was a slight discomfort, but I didn’t want to bother Cassian with carrying me everywhere, even though that was very convenient. As I made my way downstairs, an aroma filled my nose. It smelt delicious. My stomach certainly agreed, and it growled in response.“Elara? Why didn’t you call me to come get you? You shouldn’t be walking around.” Cassian’s voice caught my attention.Cassian walked up to me and picked me up before I could protest. It took me a second before I noticed he was shirtless.Oh my God.I’m sure my whole face was red as he dropped me on the seat closest to where he sat.I looked up, trying to keep my eyes from his chest as I looked at him. “This isn’t normally where I sit.” I said in a nervous breath.“Well, it’s a big ass dining. I don’t want to shout if I want to speak with you.” He said, giving me a smile.“Did you cook?” I asked

I flinched at the way Cassian’s voice was sounding even though it wasn’t directed at me. I had never seen him this angry before.I didn’t even want to think about how terrified the maids probably were.Did he really care about me that much? The maids were all silent, but I could see some of them cowering.“I believe I asked a question! Have you all gone deaf?!” His voice thundered again. When they didn’t say anything, he scoffed and beckoned to Tony, who gave a firm nod.He stalked to one of the maids and held her in a grip that looked very painful. She yelled in pain.It seemed that was what made the maids come to their senses as they all began to beg. All but one. Isla. One of the maids fell to her knees hurriedly. “S… sir, we h.. had no idea t… this would happen. Isla j.. just asked us to clear out of the kitchen… We didn’t p.. plan anything with her! We… w…weren’t the ones who told her today was our off day!”She spoke frantically as all the maids nodded. ”Yes. We… we had no idea.

Well, that wasn’t rude.I narrowed my eyes at her. I had had enough of her attitude.“You don’t have to be rude about it. I am the lady of this house, and I won’t tolerate your dismissiveness any longer.” I said firmly. She didn’t say anything, but I saw her clench her jaw.“Now, how can I get some tea?” I snapped.“In the kitchen, there’s an electric kettle; all you have to do is fill it with water and turn it on. It boils within minutes. Tea bags are in the cupboard above where it is being kept.”I nodded and watched her leave.I like the fact that I finally called her out. She was getting out of hand.I entered the kitchen and saw the kettle on a countertop as described.I opened the cupboard above it and saw the tea bags as she said. I brought them out and picked a mug. I turned to the counter and reached for the kettle so I could fill it with water.I let out a blood-curdling scream as I fell to the ground. My hands were burned, and the hot water splashed all over my skin.I crie

“What do you mean by she left? Why?”“Mr. Rooke asked her to leave.”Why would he ask her to leave after the night they had?It wasn’t making any sense.I didn’t say anything as I headed to my room.Celeste was gone. Just like that. What happened between them? Why send her away?“No, Elara, it is none of your concern. Don’t get dragged into their drama again.”I gave myself a reminder as I dissuaded my mind from thinking about anything related to them.Whatever they were up to was their business.I spent the rest of my evening packaging my pieces. I was going to take them to the office tomorrow. My room was starting to get cramped. After a gruesome couple of hours, I was finally done, as I arranged them in a corner.“Finally.” I groaned as I stretched.I was hungry, so I decided to go down for dinner.Celeste wasn’t around anymore. I didn’t need to be afraid of any run-in.Although some part of me was still expecting her to pop up in some corner of the house. When I got down, I met Ca

I didn’t know how to feel.I pulled back as I ran upstairs, eventually resting on a wall as I took deep breaths. What exactly was I feeling?I laughed as I remembered what Noah said, about me not seeing the kiss myself.Well, I saw it now. I wasn’t even surprised.Did they even know how many times I had caught them? Or were they just flaunting their relationship in my face? And why did Cassian ask for one of my paintings only to pull this move a few hours later?Well, my mood was now ruined.I took a deep breath as I finally lifted myself off the wall. There was nothing left in this house or in this marriage for me anyway. I never belonged here in the first place.I went up to my room and decided to return to bed. There was no use bothering the lovebirds.I spent hours twisting and turning in bed, unable to find a comfortable position. I was really starting to get frustrated. Was I possibly bothered about what I saw? There was no way.I didn’t like Cassian, and there was no way he lik
