I flinched at the way Cassian’s voice was sounding even though it wasn’t directed at me. I had never seen him this angry before.

I didn’t even want to think about how terrified the maids probably were.

Did he really care about me that much?

The maids were all silent, but I could see some of them cowering.

“I believe I asked a question! Have you all gone deaf?!” His voice thundered again.

When they didn’t say anything, he scoffed and beckoned to Tony, who gave a firm nod.

He stalked to one of the maids and held her in a grip that looked very painful. She yelled in pain.

It seemed that was what made the maids come to their senses as they all began to beg. All but one. Isla.

One of the maids fell to her knees hurriedly. “S… sir, we h.. had no idea t… this would happen. Isla j.. just asked us to clear out of the kitchen… We didn’t p.. plan anything with her! We… w…weren’t the ones who told her today was our off day!”

She spoke frantically as all the maids nodded. ”Yes. We… we had no idea.” Another one spoke.

“I don’t regret it.” Isla finally spoke up. She was brave; I would give her that.

But why? I had never done anything wrong to her. Why did she hate me so much?

“What did you just say?” Cassian seethed.

“I said I don’t regret it. Miss Kayla was right. She,” She pointed at me. “Is not fit to be the lady of this household. I was only serving my boss and doing what she asked of me. I am not afraid. She already promised to protect me.”

Wait, so her hostility was because of Cassian’s sister?

I jumped in my seat at the sound that echoed in the room.

Cassian slapped her. He actually slapped her.

As she fell to the ground, he held her by her shirt.

“You are going to be spending a very long time in jail.” He let go of her and turned to the rest of the maids, all of whom were on the floor.

“This insolence cannot be pardoned. Tony, call my lawyer. Each and every single one of them will be sued by Elara, and best believe we are not going to settle. As for this rat,” he pointed at Isla who was still on the floor, “I want her jailed.”

The maids begged as Tony made a call, and soon guards came in and began dragging them out one after another.

I finally let out a breath when we were left alone.

Cassian stood up for me.

Honestly, I was surprised. I tried not to think too much of it as he walked to me.

“Are you okay? Do you need anything?” He sat beside me with a worried look.

I was definitely not used to this.

“I… I’m fine.”

“If you need anything, just let me know.”

“Actually, I do want to go to the garden. I want to read. Since I can no longer paint now, I should look for something else to fill my time.”

”Okay.”

He lifted me up and took me to the outside garden, gently placing me on a chair as I muttered a thank you.

Without any maids around, Cassian ended up helping me fetch everything I needed.

It was heartwarming to see, but I still tried to remind myself that he was just being a good person. His heart belonged to another.

He didn’t leave my side, and I couldn’t help but divert my gaze to him every once in a while. This was the first time I actually took time to notice his features. He was handsome, and the mask he wore gave him a very mysterious edge. It actually made him more attractive.

If he wasn’t in love with another, maybe I might have had a little crush on him.

“I can feel you staring.”

I yelped as the book that I had been using as a cover fell from my hands and onto my lap.

“I.. I wasn’t staring.” I finally said.

He didn’t say anything as he continued working on his iPad.

“I wanted to ask something.”

He paused, then turned to me. “I’m listening.”

I bit my lip before asking. I hoped he wouldn’t get angry at my question.

“I wanted to know what would happen to the maids. I… I didn’t want to sue them.”

He thought for a while before responding.

“They had no respect for you and repeatedly disrespected you. They should be happy they are not sleeping in jail, yet. You really shouldn’t allow people to treat you that way.”

I cleared my throat. “Okay. How about Rose? S.. she wasn’t a part of their plan. She already asked me for permission to travel before they enacted their plan. It would be unfair if she lost her job because of them.”

“Hmm. I would prefer a complete change in staff.” His eyes held mine. “But if you are fine with her, then I guess she can resume when she gets back. Before then, there will be maids here by the weekend to help around the house till you are completely ready to walk on your own.”

“And who is supposed to help me out till the weekend?” I asked, confused.

“I am here and completely capable of taking care of my wife.”

I didn’t say anything as I returned to reading my book.

I hadn’t thanked him yet for what he did, but for some reason, my mouth couldn’t utter the words.

We spent the next few hours in silence, and because I didn’t want to bother him, I slept off after finishing my book.

I had no idea how long I had slept, but when I woke up, I was in my room.

Did Cassian carry me here?

I saw a note by my bedside.

‘When you wake up, dinner is waiting for you. Call me so I can come carry you downstairs.’

I smiled at the note. This was cute.I cleared my throat as I tried standing up.The wounds on my feet didn’t hurt as much anymore. There was a slight discomfort, but I didn’t want to bother Cassian with carrying me everywhere, even though that was very convenient. As I made my way downstairs, an aroma filled my nose. It smelt delicious. My stomach certainly agreed, and it growled in response.“Elara? Why didn’t you call me to come get you? You shouldn’t be walking around.” Cassian’s voice caught my attention.Cassian walked up to me and picked me up before I could protest. It took me a second before I noticed he was shirtless.Oh my God.I’m sure my whole face was red as he dropped me on the seat closest to where he sat.I looked up, trying to keep my eyes from his chest as I looked at him. “This isn’t normally where I sit.” I said in a nervous breath.“Well, it’s a big ass dining. I don’t want to shout if I want to speak with you.” He said, giving me a smile.“Did you cook?” I asked

Well, that wasn’t rude.I narrowed my eyes at her. I had had enough of her attitude.“You don’t have to be rude about it. I am the lady of this house, and I won’t tolerate your dismissiveness any longer.” I said firmly. She didn’t say anything, but I saw her clench her jaw.“Now, how can I get some tea?” I snapped.“In the kitchen, there’s an electric kettle; all you have to do is fill it with water and turn it on. It boils within minutes. Tea bags are in the cupboard above where it is being kept.”I nodded and watched her leave.I like the fact that I finally called her out. She was getting out of hand.I entered the kitchen and saw the kettle on a countertop as described.I opened the cupboard above it and saw the tea bags as she said. I brought them out and picked a mug. I turned to the counter and reached for the kettle so I could fill it with water.I let out a blood-curdling scream as I fell to the ground. My hands were burned, and the hot water splashed all over my skin.I crie

“What do you mean by she left? Why?”“Mr. Rooke asked her to leave.”Why would he ask her to leave after the night they had?It wasn’t making any sense.I didn’t say anything as I headed to my room.Celeste was gone. Just like that. What happened between them? Why send her away?“No, Elara, it is none of your concern. Don’t get dragged into their drama again.”I gave myself a reminder as I dissuaded my mind from thinking about anything related to them.Whatever they were up to was their business.I spent the rest of my evening packaging my pieces. I was going to take them to the office tomorrow. My room was starting to get cramped. After a gruesome couple of hours, I was finally done, as I arranged them in a corner.“Finally.” I groaned as I stretched.I was hungry, so I decided to go down for dinner.Celeste wasn’t around anymore. I didn’t need to be afraid of any run-in.Although some part of me was still expecting her to pop up in some corner of the house. When I got down, I met Ca

I didn’t know how to feel.I pulled back as I ran upstairs, eventually resting on a wall as I took deep breaths. What exactly was I feeling?I laughed as I remembered what Noah said, about me not seeing the kiss myself.Well, I saw it now. I wasn’t even surprised.Did they even know how many times I had caught them? Or were they just flaunting their relationship in my face? And why did Cassian ask for one of my paintings only to pull this move a few hours later?Well, my mood was now ruined.I took a deep breath as I finally lifted myself off the wall. There was nothing left in this house or in this marriage for me anyway. I never belonged here in the first place.I went up to my room and decided to return to bed. There was no use bothering the lovebirds.I spent hours twisting and turning in bed, unable to find a comfortable position. I was really starting to get frustrated. Was I possibly bothered about what I saw? There was no way.I didn’t like Cassian, and there was no way he lik

While my father continued screaming at me, I merely ignored them as I walked away.Melissa ran up to me. “You’re going to regret making an enemy of your family, Elara.”I rolled my eyes at her as I finally entered the car.In the car, I noticed Tony staring at me through the window every five seconds.“Tony, do you have something to say?” I finally asked, catching his eyes in the mirror.“I just wanted to make sure you’re all right.” He said, stiffly.“I’m completely fine.” I snapped. He didn’t say anything as he continued driving.“I’m sorry. I’m just a bit on edge. I have dealt with a lot today. You saw it firsthand: first Vivienne and now people who are supposed to be my family. I guess I just always thought they could change. It’s all just overwhelming, but at the same time, I’m happy I stood up to them. I feel… lighter.”He nodded. “If he wasn’t your father, he would have lost his hand.”He really was a man of few words.“Thanks for that earlier. I appreciate you stepping in.” I
