I sat in front of my vanity mirror as I looked at the jewelry display of pearls staring at me.

The first time my Mother ever gave me something expensive to wear.

According to her, we couldn't be looking like a shabby family to the Rookes.

I took a sharp breath as I touched them. They seemed like glass, beautiful and delicate. I had to be careful because Mother had already warned me that nothing should happen to them.

I wasn't planning on letting anything happen anyways.

I got pulled out of my trance as I heard a knock on my bedroom door. The room I spent my childhood in.

"Come in." I called, turning to face the mirror once more.

"Hello, sister." Melissa strutted in with her blonde locks cascading down and her usual perfect manicured red nails.

I looked at her through the mirror. "What do you want, Melissa?"

"Oh, don't be so rude. I just wanted to check on you. See how you're preparing to get married off to 'the freak'." She chuckled her lashes fanning her cheeks.

I didn't say anything.

"Is there something important you have to say Lisa? As you can see I'm getting ready." I styled my strawberry blonde hair in a simple low bun. Nothing extra.

"I will really like to see how you will manage this. You're always so calm. Now I'll finally see something." She put on fake doe eyes as she clapped her hands together.

"I am worried about you, though. I've heard the stories about Cassian. I heard he lives like an animal and has this horrid deformity on his face. I can't imagine waking up to that face every day." She shuddered.

"You're such a good big sister. Always protecting me. I do appreciate it, though. Really, I do." She said with kindness, placing her hands on my shoulders and meeting my eyes through the mirror.

Anyone could have mistaken her for being actually kind, but I wasn't fooled. Melissa had been playing this game since we were young. The perfect daughter. Good grades, best social calendar. Best school, best career. She was their prized child.

"Here. Let me help you." She said, walking over to me and picking up the pearl necklace. "It's exquisite." She smirked. "I wonder if it will crack if it falls." She said as she almost let it go, then laughed.

"Melissa." I said warningly. "If you're here to play games, leave."

"I just want to help you put it on." She pouted.

She walked up to me placing the necklace around my neck. I watched her through the mirror as she clasped it around her neck and gave a sweet smile.

"Ouch."

Melissa's manicured nail nicked my neck. There was definitely going to be a mark.

"Oh, sorry. That was an accident. These nails keep nicking things." Her eyes glinted.

"I need to be alone, Melissa." I managed to say with a tone of finality, touching the wound as I winced again. It stung.

Melissa rolled her eyes, and then strutted out of the room.

I took a deep breath as she left. I felt so unsafe. This house felt like it was closing in on me until I had no space to breathe. I felt my stomach churn in a very uncomfortable way. I hoped that I wasn't about to throw up, although I half expected to. This night was going to be terrible after all. I took a last deep breath and finally stood up.

No use delaying the inevitable. This was something I was doing for the children.

The car ride there had been.... Insufferable. I had wished it had been over every minute as Mother and Father gave me lessons on how to behave properly. They were so worried about how our 'in-laws to be' would perceive our family. I rolled my eyes at their behavior.

We were here now, and I was kind of wishing the ride was longer. I could feel my heart in my throat as I felt the familiar discomfort in my stomach as I stood in front of the huge mansion. This was sickening to say the least.

The door was soon opened by a maid who looked to be about my age. She bowed, took my parents' coats, then ushered us in.

I gulped as we came in full view of a dining hall with a spread fit for royalty. I didn't even know whose house we were at. All I knew was that it was fucking grand. From the stone drive through and the angel fountain just outside, the Rooke family definitely lived up to their expectations.

"Mr Wright. I am pleased you honored my invitation. Please come in." A woman in her late 50s spoke to my Father as they shook hands.

"Mrs Rooke, it is always a pleasure. I am pleased you decided to invite us." He turned to us. "Here are my two lovely daughters. Elara and Melissa. The apples of my eye I call them." He laughed at his own joke as the woman chuckled.

"Have a seat, ladies. These here are my twins, Kayla and Kieran." She said as they all exchanged pleasantries.

The twins gave Lisa and me a look as they turned to each other and smirked like they knew something. Something they were not going to share.

"Is Cassian not joining us for the evening?" He definitely wanted to see the freak of a man. Everyone wanted to.

"He's just experiencing a little hiccup. I hope you don't mind putting up with us for the time being."

"Oh, not at all. We were just concerned. I'm sure your husband will be thrilled at the progress you have made with Rooke industries." Father hurriedly said.

"Ah yes. May his soul continue to rest. I do miss him sometimes but what can I do? So, which of these two lovely girls is to be married to my son?" She asked turning to both of us.

"Elara, dear, say hello to Mrs Rooke." My Mother said.

"H.. Hi." I said shyly. My nerves were all over the place and not in a flattering way. I could feel sweat gather in my palms and on my forehead.

"You are beautiful. I'm sure you and Cassian will get along wonderfully." She said in a sweet voice.

She was creepy.

"Have you been told about what is expected of you in this marriage?" She asked me.

"Um... no?" What did she mean? Was getting married to her tyrant of a son not enough?

"Within the first year of your marriage, you are expected to be with child."

"What?!" My eyes widened as my fork dropped from my hand. That wasn't the agreement. My eyes turned to my parents who avoided my eyes as they looked down at their plates like it was suddenly the most interesting thing in the world. They knew. They knew!

"I'm sure she will be delighted to once she meets him. We all want an heir after all. Nothing like an offspring to carry Cassian's legacy." My Father spoke.

"I prefer to be addressed as Mr Rooke." A voice spoke.

It was finally the day of the event, and I was currently in my room getting ready.I wasn't planning on doing something extremely extravagant. I could do a simple makeup look and style my hair myself. There was no need for a stylist.I had settled for a simple bodycon dress that stopped a little above my knees.I curled my hair and left it down, then just used some light powder, mascara, and a little lipstick. I was set to go.After putting on my shoes, I stood in front of my full-length mirror and assessed my look.I still wasn't showing yet, although it seemed like a tiny bump was already forming.Maybe it was just me though. When I was satisfied, I grabbed my clutch and deemed myself good to go.I was walking down the stairs when Rose walked up to me."You look stunning, ma'am." Her usual smile was present."Thank you. I was even thinking it was a bit much.""No way. It's perfect."I smiled at her compliment."Will Mr. Rooke be accompanying you?"My smile almost fell, then I realiz

Beth and I finally concluded on matters pertaining to the fundraiser, which will be held tomorrow at the foundation. It wasn't an overly big event like society galas. We were more focused on actually doing something good for the children. People were piling in already to set up, and the children stared in awe at the different equipment being brought in."This is going to be so good. Who would have thought a year ago that we would be hosting our very own fundraiser?" Beth clapped her hands in excitement."Yeah, we really have come a long way." I smiled. "I'm happy we get to do this together.""Me too, E." She suddenly frowned. "Hey! I told you to hang that on the other side of the hall!"I shook my head as I watched her walk off to scold God knows who. I wasn't planning on getting involved since I trusted her and I knew everything would turn out beautifully."Hey, E." Noah walked up to me."Hi, Noah. What are you doing here?"I hugged him."Don't tell me that's Beth yelling at someone

I didn't wake up the next morning in a better mood. I couldn't shake the ominous feeling I had. I placed a hand on my stomach as it dawned on me that I had one more potential threat to my baby.I eventually got out of bed, ready to begin the new day.My morning sickness was gradually getting better as the days passed by, and I couldn't possibly be happier. If I threw up aggressively one more time, I was certain one or two organs would come out. This morning I felt like eating pancakes completely bathed in maple syrup, and I had already informed Rose.I guess my taste buds were gradually coming back. It was still a shame I couldn't drink coffee, though. My caffeine was what kept me going most mornings. When I had finished getting ready, I proceeded downstairs to the dining room to find Cassian already seated."Morning." I mumbled out as I took a seat."Good morning." He didn't look up from whatever he was looking at."Good morning, ma'am." Rose greeted me cheerfully, dropping a plate o

I quickly took a glass of water to calm my violent coughs. What was Melissa doing here?Rose ran up to me, her eyes filled with worry."Are you okay, ma'am?!"I nodded and eventually calmed down."Y..Yes, um...where is she exactly?""She's outside the manor gate. She hasn't been let in yet."What was Melissa doing here? There was no way she was up to any good."Should we let her in, ma'am?"I could pretend not to be home, right?I shook my head. No, that wouldn't work. Melissa acted out whenever she didn't get what she wanted, and I was in no mood to find out what she would do if I refused to see her."Ma'am?""Yes?" Her voice jolted me out of my thoughts."You haven't said anything yet.""Um...sure, let her in."Rose looked skeptical. "Are you sure, ma’am? You don't have to see her if you don't want to.""No, it's fine, let her in." I gave her a reassuring smile."Okay, ma'am." She nodded and walked away.Well, I couldn't finish my meal anymore; that was for certain.I stood up and m

"Hello, Miss Hart. How are we doing today?"The doctor greeted me as she took her seat."I feel fine. I mean, despite throwing up every other morning. I think I've got this whole pregnancy thing down."She laughed. "That's nice to hear. Apart from that, is there any other discomfort?""I did feel dizzy once, but other than a slight wave of dizziness, I was completely fine."She nodded. "It happens from time to time. Anything else?""No, not really. Oh yeah, I had to drink wine at an event. Will that do anything? It was just a simple sip.""No, it shouldn't, but do try to avoid it in the future." She paused and dropped her pen."I take it you haven't told your husband yet?"I shook my head. "I... I haven't had the chance.""Hmm. I would advise you to tell him as soon as possible. You will start showing soon, and you wouldn't be able to hide it any longer."I nodded. "I'll tell him.""Okay, so everything seems to be in order, which is wonderful news. You can continue as you were. Try to

What document? Why was this woman hellbent on ruining any kind of happiness I had?'What document?' I asked in response.'It's a confidential document containing information regarding a project called 'Helix'. I need to know how much Cassian knows about it.'Was I supposed to check every single document in his office with Helix written on it?What the hell?I furrowed my eyebrows in curiosity as I reread the text. It still wasn't clear to me."What's up?" Beth asked me when she saw the look on my face."Um...nothing. It's nothing."As I walked to my office, I was still lost in thought. A file? Where would I begin to search for that? And how much time would I have in his office before I got caught?I ended up not focusing for the rest of the day and ultimately decided to go home early. When I got home, Rose informed me that Cassian wasn't home yet. After I had finished washing up and changed, I decided to go to the garden to read.Hopefully, that would help determine what I should do.
