Rain beat relentlessly against the tall windows of the Lawson mansion.

Nine-year-old Nadia remained standing by the upstairs window long after her father's black car disappeared through the gates.

Her small hand rested against the cold glass.

"He'll be back in a few days," Mrs. Carter said gently behind her.

Nadia nodded without turning around.

"He promised."

Mrs. Carter smiled sadly.

"Then I'm sure he'll keep his promise."

Nadia wanted to believe that.

She truly did.

Her father had been trying so hard ever since bringing her home from Willow Creek. Every morning, they ate breakfast together before school. Every evening, they talked about their day over dinner. On weekends, they visited bookstores, museums, and parks.

For the first time since losing her mother, she had begun to feel safe again.

But tonight...

The house felt lonely.

Almost too quiet.

Three days later...

Richard still hadn't returned.

His meetings had been extended because of an unexpected crisis at work.

He called every night without fail.

"How's my princess?"

"I'm okay."

"Did you finish the mystery book we bought?"

"I did."

"And?"

"The ending wasn't very good."

Richard laughed.

"So my little critic has spoken."

"When are you coming home?"

There was a brief silence.

"Soon."

"You said that yesterday."

"I know."

"I'm sorry."

"I'll make it up to you."

Nadia forced a smile, even though he couldn't see it.

"Okay."

After hanging up, she quietly walked back to her bedroom.

Mrs. Carter watched her from the hallway.

Poor child...

She was learning disappointment far too early.

A week later, Richard finally returned.

Nadia heard the front door open and raced downstairs.

"Dad!"

Richard barely had time to put down his suitcase before she threw her arms around him.

He hugged her tightly.

"I missed you."

"You were gone forever."

"It only felt that way."

She frowned.

"You missed movie night."

"I know."

"I'm sorry."

He reached into his briefcase.

"I brought you something."

He handed her a beautifully wrapped package.

Nadia slowly opened it.

Inside was a deluxe art set.

Colored pencils.

Paintbrushes.

Sketchbooks.

More supplies than she had ever seen.

Her eyes sparkled.

"It's beautiful!"

"You like it?"

"I love it!"

She hugged him again.

"Thank you!"

Richard smiled with relief.

For a moment...

Everything felt normal again.

The following Saturday, Richard kept his promise.

He canceled every meeting on his schedule.

No business calls.

No emails.

No interruptions.

The entire day belonged to Nadia.

They watched the movie she had been waiting weeks to see.

Shared a giant bucket of popcorn.

Laughed over silly scenes.

Afterward, they wandered through Central Park, feeding ducks by the lake.

"Dad?"

"Hm?"

"Do grown-ups cry?"

Richard looked down at her.

"Sometimes."

"Even dads?"

He smiled.

"Especially dads."

She hesitated.

"I heard you crying outside Mom's room."

Richard stopped walking.

She hadn't been asleep that night.

He swallowed hard.

"I miss her."

"So do I."

They stood together in silence.

Neither knew what else to say.

Weeks turned into months.

Life slowly settled into a routine.

Richard buried himself in work during the day but always tried to make time for Nadia in the evenings.

Mrs. Carter helped with homework.

She taught Nadia how to bake cookies.

How to set the dinner table properly.

How to play chess.

Nadia proved to be surprisingly good at it.

"You think before you move," Mrs. Carter laughed after losing another game.

"Grandma says rushing creates mistakes."

"Your grandmother is a very wise woman."

"I know."

Every Sunday evening, Grandma Eleanor called.

The conversations always began the same way.

"Have you been eating properly?"

"Yes, Grandma."

"Sleeping enough?"

"Yes."

"Studying?"

"Yes."

"And your father?"

"He's trying."

Grandma Eleanor smiled through the phone.

"That's all anyone can ask."

One chilly afternoon, Richard arrived home earlier than usual.

"Nadia!"

She looked up from the dining table where she was finishing a school project.

"Guess what?"

"What?"

"I've been invited to a charity gala."

"What's a gala?"

"A very fancy fundraising dinner."

She wrinkled her nose.

"So... adults dressing up?"

Richard laughed.

"That's one way to describe it."

"Do I have to go?"

"I was hoping you would."

"Will there be cake?"

"There will definitely be cake."

"Then I'll go."

Saturday evening arrived.

Nadia wore a pale blue dress Mrs. Carter had carefully ironed.

Richard looked handsome in a black tuxedo.

"You look just like your mother," he said softly.

Nadia smiled.

"Really?"

"The prettiest girl in the room."

She slipped her hand into his.

"Let's go."

The Grand Crescent Hotel glittered beneath thousands of lights.

Luxury cars lined the entrance.

Men in tailored suits.

Women in elegant gowns.

Everything looked magical.

Nadia held tightly to Richard's hand as cameras flashed around them.

"Dad..."

"There are so many people."

"Stay close."

"I will."

Inside, soft music floated through the ballroom.

Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead.

Servers moved gracefully between guests carrying silver trays.

Nadia looked around in amazement.

"It looks like a castle."

Richard smiled.

"It does."

Suddenly, someone called his name.

"Richard!"

He turned.

A tall man approached with a broad smile.

"There you are."

"I've been looking everywhere."

Richard shook his hand.

"Good to see you, Daniel."

As the two men began discussing business, Nadia quietly wandered toward one of the dessert tables.

Her eyes settled on a magnificent chocolate fountain.

"Wow..."

She reached for a strawberry.

At the same moment, another hand reached for the same one.

"Oh!"

Nadia quickly pulled her hand back.

"I'm sorry."

A soft laugh answered her.

"No, sweetheart."

"I think I should apologize."

Nadia looked up.

Standing before her was one of the most elegant women she had ever seen.

She wore a deep emerald evening gown.

Her dark hair fell in perfect waves over one shoulder.

Her smile was warm.

Kind.

Beautiful.

"You wanted this strawberry first."

The woman picked it up and handed it to Nadia.

"Here."

Nadia smiled shyly.

"Thank you."

"You're welcome."

The woman crouched slightly so they were eye level.

"What's your name?"

"Nadia."

"I'm Victoria."

She brushed a tiny crumb from Nadia's dress.

"You have lovely manners."

"My grandma says manners cost nothing."

Victoria smiled.

"Your grandmother sounds like a remarkable woman."

Before Nadia could reply, Richard walked over.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I hope Nadia wasn't bothering you."

Victoria looked genuinely surprised.

"Not at all."

"We were just talking."

She smiled at Richard.

"You have a wonderful daughter."

Richard looked proudly at Nadia.

"I know."

For a brief moment...

The three of them stood together, laughing over chocolate-covered strawberries.

Nadia didn't know it.

Richard didn't know it.

But somewhere across the ballroom...

A pair of watchful eyes observed them.

Eyes filled not with warmth...

But calculation.

Someone quietly smiled.

Not because they were happy...

But because they had just found the perfect opportunity.

  • WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE.   CHAPTER 21: MEETING THE FAMILY

By Saturday morning, Victoria had already changed her mind about her wedding dress three times. The first one was too simple. The second one was too dramatic. The third one was perfect. At least, that was what she had decided five minutes ago.She stood in front of her bedroom mirror, holding the phone in one hand and the ring box in the other.Claire was still on the phone."You've changed your mind again, haven't you?"Victoria smiled."Maybe.""Victoria.""What?""You've been engaged for less than twenty-four hours.""I know.""And you've already looked at thirty-seven wedding dresses.""Thirty-eight."Claire groaned."You're impossible."Victoria laughed. She looked at herself in the mirror again. There was something different about her.She couldn't explain it.Maybe it was the ring.Maybe it was knowing that the man she loved had looked her in the eyes and asked her to spend the rest of her life with him.Whatever it was, she couldn't stop smiling. Her mother walked past the ope

  • WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE.   CHAPTER 20: SHE SAID YES

Victoria stared at the ring on her finger for the entire ride home. She had probably looked at it fifty times already.Maybe more.Every time she thought about putting her hand down, her eyes found the ring again. It was real. She was engaged.Engaged.The word still sounded strange in her head.A smile slowly spread across her face. Then she covered her mouth, trying to stop herself from laughing. She failed. The driver glanced at her through the rearview mirror."Good evening, ma'am."Victoria immediately straightened."Good evening."He looked at her again."You seem happy.""I am."That was all she said. She looked back at her hand. The smile returned.Richard had proposed.Richard Lawson had actually proposed to her.And she had said yes.She pulled out her phone. She opened their conversation.Typed:I can't believe I'm actually engaged. She stared at it.Deleted it.Typed:You really proposed to me.Deleted that too. Finally, she sent:I keep looking at my hand. His reply came

  • WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE.   CHAPTER 19: THE WAY HE LOOKED AT HER

Victoria had never been good at keeping surprises.Richard had discovered that about her very quickly. She would try to act normal, but her face always gave her away. Whenever she had something planned, she smiled too much. Whenever she was hiding something, she became unusually quiet. So when she called him on Tuesday afternoon and said, "Don't make plans for Friday," Richard immediately knew something was happening."Why?""Because I said so.""That's not an explanation.""It's the only one you're getting.""Victoria.""Richard."He laughed."You're impossible.""I've been told.""And what exactly am I supposed to do on Friday?""Nothing.""Nothing?""Nothing.""Should I dress up?""No.""Casual?""Maybe.""Victoria.""Goodbye, Richard."The call ended.Richard stared at his phone. He smiled despite himself.Whatever she was planning, he was looking forward to it.Three days later, Friday finally arrived.Richard spent most of the afternoon at work, but his mind kept drifting. He ha

  • WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE.   CHAPTER 18: TELLING NADIA

Richard had spent the entire drive home wondering how he was going to tell Nadia. He had rehearsed it twice. The first version sounded too serious. The second sounded ridiculous.By the time he pulled into the driveway, he had decided to stop rehearsing altogether. He walked into the house and found Nadia on the floor in the living room, surrounded by colored paper. She looked up."Dad.""Hey.""You came early.""Did I?""Yes."Richard put his keys on the table."What are you doing?""Making something."He looked at the mess."For school?""No.""Then what?"Nadia held up a badly cut piece of cardboard."It's a house."Richard stared at it."That's a house?""Yes.""Okay."She narrowed her eyes."Don't laugh.""I'm not laughing.""You are.""I'm smiling.""Same thing."Richard sat down beside her."Where's Victoria?""She went home.""When?""About an hour ago."Richard nodded.Nadia picked up another piece of paper."She said she was coming tomorrow.""She probably will."Nadia looke

  • WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE.   CHAPTER 17: SOMETHING WORTH KEEPING

The following week passed quietly. For Nadia, quiet was good. She liked knowing what each day would bring.School in the morning.Homework in the afternoon.Dinner with her father. And, whenever possible, a phone call with Grandma Eleanor before bed.But lately, there had been one small change.Victoria.She was becoming a regular part of their lives. Not in a way that felt forced. She simply appeared.Sometimes she would come over for dinner.Sometimes Richard would pick her up after work.Sometimes Nadia would spend an entire afternoon talking to her about school while Richard sat in his office pretending not to listen. And Nadia didn't mind.Actually...She liked it.Very much.On Friday afternoon, Nadia sat at the kitchen table working on a science assignment when Victoria walked through the front door."Nadia?""I'm here!"Victoria followed the sound of her voice. She found Nadia surrounded by books, papers and colored pencils."What are you working on?""A project."Victoria loo

  • WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE.   CHAPTER 16: THE NAME ON THE FILE

Richard came home just before ten that night. The house was quiet.Too quiet. He closed the front door carefully and slipped off his coat.He expected Nadia to be asleep, but when he walked into the living room, he found the television still on.Nadia was curled up on the sofa beneath a blanket, pretending to be asleep.Richard smiled."You know, pretending to sleep doesn't work when you're holding the remote."One eye opened."I wasn't pretending.""Of course not.""I was watching."Richard picked up the remote."The television is on mute."Nadia sat up."I was thinking.""At ten o'clock?""Important things don't care about the time."Richard laughed."Who taught you that?""You.""I definitely didn't.""You did."She pulled the blanket around herself."So?""So what?""How was your date?"Richard loosened his tie."It was good."Nadia smiled."Really good?""Really good.""Did you talk?""Yes.""Did you eat?""Yes.""Did you laugh?"Richard looked at her."Why does this sound like a
