Richard had expected the conversation to end after a polite introduction.

Charity galas weren't exactly the kind of place where strangers became friends. Most conversations lasted a few minutes before everyone drifted away to greet someone more important.

But somehow...

He found himself reluctant to walk away.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the master of ceremonies announced, his cheerful voice echoing through the magnificent ballroom. "Dinner is now served. Kindly proceed to your assigned tables."

Soft applause rippled through the hall.

Guests rose from their seats, smoothing expensive gowns and tailored suits before making their way toward the grand dining room.

Nadia looked up at her father.

"Dad..."

"Hmm?"

"Do you think we're sitting with Miss Victoria?"

Richard chuckled.

"I don't think we get to choose, Princess."

Victoria smiled as she walked toward the seating board placed beside the entrance.

Rows of elegant ivory cards displayed every guest's name.

She slowly scanned the list before a soft laugh escaped her lips.

"That's... quite a coincidence."

Richard walked over.

"What is?"

She stepped aside.

Three names appeared together.

**Richard Lawson.**

**Nadia Lawson.**

**Victoria Hayes.**

Richard stared at the cards for a moment before shaking his head with a smile.

"I guess the organizers have made the decision for us."

Nadia clapped excitedly.

"Yay!"

Victoria laughed.

"I hope you don't mind sharing a table with me."

Richard smiled politely.

"I don't think my daughter would forgive me if I said no."

Nadia nodded seriously.

"I wouldn't."

The three walked into the dining hall together.

...

The ballroom looked even more breathtaking inside.

Crystal chandeliers reflected thousands of tiny lights across the polished marble floor.

Fresh white roses decorated every table.

A string quartet played softly from a raised platform near the windows overlooking Manhattan's glittering skyline.

Waiters moved gracefully between guests, filling crystal glasses with sparkling water and wine.

Nadia looked around in amazement.

"It looks like a palace."

Richard smiled.

"I thought you said that about the lobby."

"It has two palaces."

Victoria laughed.

"I like the way you think."

Their table sat near the center of the ballroom.

Several other guests were already seated.

One of them, an elderly gentleman with silver hair and kind eyes, immediately stood to greet Richard.

"Mr. Lawson."

Richard smiled warmly.

"Judge Bennett."

"It's been a long time."

The judge noticed Nadia.

"And this beautiful young lady must be your daughter."

Nadia offered her hand politely.

"My grandma says ladies should always introduce themselves."

The older man smiled as he shook her tiny hand.

"Your grandmother raised you well."

"I'm Nadia."

"A pleasure to meet you."

Then his eyes shifted toward Victoria.

"And your wife?"

Richard nearly choked on his water.

Victoria blinked in surprise.

The judge laughed.

"My apologies."

"I assumed..."

Richard smiled awkwardly.

"No."

"We only met this evening."

"I see."

The judge looked genuinely embarrassed.

"My mistake."

Victoria simply smiled.

"It happens."

The misunderstanding disappeared as quickly as it had come.

Dinner was served moments later.

The first course arrived.

Creamy mushroom soup.

Freshly baked bread.

Nadia carefully broke a small piece of bread before dipping it into the soup.

Her eyes widened.

"This is delicious."

Victoria smiled.

"First time trying truffle soup?"

Nadia nodded.

"It tastes fancy."

Richard laughed.

"I think that's the best description I've ever heard."

"It does."

"It tastes... expensive."

Even Victoria couldn't stop herself from laughing.

"You have a wonderful sense of humor."

Mrs. Carter always said Nadia had inherited Evelyn's ability to make people laugh without trying.

Watching her smile tonight...

Richard silently thanked God.

For just one evening...

His daughter looked like a child again.

Not a little girl carrying grief far too heavy for her age.

...

"So," Victoria asked after the main course arrived, "what do you enjoy doing outside work, Mr. Lawson?"

Richard smiled.

"Please."

"Call me Richard."

"Only if you call me Victoria."

"Deal."

She took another sip of water.

"So..."

"What does Richard Lawson do when he isn't running one of New York's largest medical technology companies?"

Richard thought for a moment.

"I read."

"What kind of books?"

"History."

"Biographies."

"Anything that teaches me something."

Victoria nodded thoughtfully.

"I like mystery novels."

Nadia suddenly looked up.

"Me too!"

Victoria smiled.

"Really?"

"I finished one last week."

"Did you solve the mystery?"

Nadia proudly nodded.

"Before the detective."

Richard shook his head.

"She always does."

Victoria laughed.

"I'll have to be careful around you then."

"You should."

Nadia answered confidently.

"I notice everything."

Richard smiled to himself.

She really did.

...

As dinner continued, conversation flowed naturally.

Victoria spoke about the children's literacy foundation she volunteered with.

She explained how they donated books to underfunded schools across the country.

Nadia listened with complete fascination.

"You help children read?"

Victoria nodded.

"I try."

"I like that."

"What do you like about it?"

"My mommy used to read to me every night."

The table fell quiet.

Victoria's expression softened.

"What was her favorite story?"

"'The Secret Garden.'"

Victoria smiled gently.

"I loved that book too."

Nadia's face lit up.

"Really?"

"My mother used to read it to me."

For a brief second...

The sadness surrounding Evelyn didn't feel so heavy.

Instead...

It became something they quietly shared.

Richard noticed how naturally Victoria changed difficult conversations without forcing anyone to smile.

She never pretended grief didn't exist.

She simply made room for happier memories beside it.

He admired that.

...

After dinner, guests slowly moved toward the ballroom once more.

Coffee was served.

Live music filled the air.

Several children gathered near the stage where a magician had begun performing tricks.

Nadia looked at Richard hopefully.

"Can I go?"

Richard smiled.

"Stay where I can see you."

"I will."

She hurried off with several other children.

Victoria watched her go.

"She's remarkable."

Richard followed Nadia with his eyes.

"I don't tell her often enough."

"You don't have to."

"She already knows you love her."

Richard looked surprised.

"What makes you say that?"

Victoria smiled.

"The way she looks at you."

Children couldn't fake trust.

Nadia trusted her father completely.

Even after losing her mother.

Richard lowered his gaze.

"I'm trying."

"I know."

"I just hope I'm enough."

Victoria didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she watched Nadia burst into laughter as the magician pulled a rabbit from an empty hat.

Then she quietly said,

"I don't think children need perfect parents."

"They just need parents who keep showing up."

Those words settled deeply inside Richard.

Maybe...

That was exactly what he needed to hear.

A few minutes later, the event host stepped back onto the stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen, before tonight comes to an end, we'd like to thank everyone who supported Children's Hope Foundation."

Applause echoed throughout the ballroom.

"We also have one final surprise."

The lights dimmed.

A large screen descended from the ceiling.

A slideshow of photographs taken throughout the evening began playing.

Pictures of guests.

Children laughing.

Donors bidding during the auction.

Families dancing.

Then...

One photograph appeared on the screen.

Nadia stood between Richard and Victoria, holding both of their hands as she laughed at something neither of them could remember.

The audience smiled warmly.

Several people applauded.

Someone jokingly shouted,

"Now that's a beautiful family!"

Richard looked slightly embarrassed.

Victoria laughed softly.

Nadia simply grinned.

"I like this picture."

Richard smiled.

"So do I."

He didn't know...

That the photograph would soon become one of the most talked-about images from the charity gala.

But tonight...

It was simply the picture of three strangers...

Whose lives had just begun to intertwine.

Richard had spent the entire drive home wondering how he was going to tell Nadia. He had rehearsed it twice. The first version sounded too serious. The second sounded ridiculous.By the time he pulled into the driveway, he had decided to stop rehearsing altogether. He walked into the house and found Nadia on the floor in the living room, surrounded by colored paper. She looked up."Dad.""Hey.""You came early.""Did I?""Yes."Richard put his keys on the table."What are you doing?""Making something."He looked at the mess."For school?""No.""Then what?"Nadia held up a badly cut piece of cardboard."It's a house."Richard stared at it."That's a house?""Yes.""Okay."She narrowed her eyes."Don't laugh.""I'm not laughing.""You are.""I'm smiling.""Same thing."Richard sat down beside her."Where's Victoria?""She went home.""When?""About an hour ago."Richard nodded.Nadia picked up another piece of paper."She said she was coming tomorrow.""She probably will."Nadia looke

  • WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE.   CHAPTER 17: SOMETHING WORTH KEEPING

The following week passed quietly. For Nadia, quiet was good. She liked knowing what each day would bring.School in the morning.Homework in the afternoon.Dinner with her father. And, whenever possible, a phone call with Grandma Eleanor before bed.But lately, there had been one small change.Victoria.She was becoming a regular part of their lives. Not in a way that felt forced. She simply appeared.Sometimes she would come over for dinner.Sometimes Richard would pick her up after work.Sometimes Nadia would spend an entire afternoon talking to her about school while Richard sat in his office pretending not to listen. And Nadia didn't mind.Actually...She liked it.Very much.On Friday afternoon, Nadia sat at the kitchen table working on a science assignment when Victoria walked through the front door."Nadia?""I'm here!"Victoria followed the sound of her voice. She found Nadia surrounded by books, papers and colored pencils."What are you working on?""A project."Victoria loo

  • WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE.   CHAPTER 16: THE NAME ON THE FILE

Richard came home just before ten that night. The house was quiet.Too quiet. He closed the front door carefully and slipped off his coat.He expected Nadia to be asleep, but when he walked into the living room, he found the television still on.Nadia was curled up on the sofa beneath a blanket, pretending to be asleep.Richard smiled."You know, pretending to sleep doesn't work when you're holding the remote."One eye opened."I wasn't pretending.""Of course not.""I was watching."Richard picked up the remote."The television is on mute."Nadia sat up."I was thinking.""At ten o'clock?""Important things don't care about the time."Richard laughed."Who taught you that?""You.""I definitely didn't.""You did."She pulled the blanket around herself."So?""So what?""How was your date?"Richard loosened his tie."It was good."Nadia smiled."Really good?""Really good.""Did you talk?""Yes.""Did you eat?""Yes.""Did you laugh?"Richard looked at her."Why does this sound like a

The restaurant was quieter than Richard had expected.Soft music played in the background while waiters moved between tables, carrying plates of food and glasses of sparkling water.Richard checked his watch.7:02 p.m.He looked toward the entrance. Then he checked his watch again.7:03.He almost laughed at himself. He had negotiated multimillion-dollar contracts without blinking. He had walked into boardrooms filled with men twice his age and never once felt intimidated.Yet tonight, waiting for Victoria, he felt strangely nervous. The doors opened.Richard looked up.Victoria walked in wearing a simple black dress and a long coat over her shoulders. She wasn't dressed like she was attending a business event. She looked relaxed.Natural.When she spotted him, her smile widened."Sorry."Richard stood."You're two minutes late."Victoria glanced at her watch."You're counting?""I might have been."She laughed."Then I apologize."Richard pulled out her chair."Please.""Thank you."

Monday arrived too quickly. The peaceful weekend in Willow Creek was over.As Richard's black SUV pulled away from the farmhouse, Nadia rolled down her window and waved both hands."Bye, Grandma!"Grandma Eleanor waved back from the porch."Study hard!""I will!""And don't forget to call me!""I won't!"Richard smiled as he watched the exchange in the rearview mirror."I think she loves you more than she loves me."Nadia laughed."That's impossible.""Is it?""Of course.""I love both of you."Grandma Eleanor stood on the porch long after the SUV disappeared down the country road. She sighed softly."They grow up too fast..."...The drive back to New York was quieter than usual.Nadia spent most of the journey reading the science book Victoria had given her weeks earlier.Every few minutes, she would excitedly point at a picture."Dad!""Did you know your heart beats over one hundred thousand times a day?"Richard chuckled."I didn't.""And look!"She flipped another page."The huma
