Chapter 1

Author: Nine Cranes
"Mom?"

No answer came from the living room.

The treacherous top-rated comment flashed through my mind again.

"Wait until she's asleep. Take her phone. Reset the password. Change all her applications to in-state schools."

Barefoot, I stood frozen in my bedroom doorway, my palms slick with sweat. Then I looked up.

A faint blue glow spilled from the end of the hallway.

The unmistakable light of a computer monitor.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

The keyboard clicked steadily, each keystroke sounding like another nail being hammered into a coffin.

When I leaned around the corner, the blood drained from my face.

My mother, Whitney Richmond, sat hunched over the computer desk. The cold blue light from the screen cast shifting shadows across her face.

She clutched my phone in one hand while the other flew across the keyboard.

On the screen was the State University Application Portal. My name, my exam registration number, and my Social Security number—every bit of my personal information was there.

At the bottom of the page, bold red letters stared back at me.

Application Submitted.

First Choice: Westbridge Business College.

Second Choice: North Valley Institute of Information Technology.

These were schools I'd never even heard of, bottom-tier colleges no one with my score would ever consider.

My hard-earned score of 1560 had been thrown straight into the trash.

"Mom! What are you doing?!" I lunged forward and ripped the mouse out of her hand.

She shot to her feet. The instant she saw me, panic flashed across her face. Then, just as quickly, she clutched her chest. Her body arched backward.

Bang.

She hit the floor hard.

"My... my heart... Gemma... my heart hurts..."

She writhed across the floor, eyes rolling back, gasping for air as her arms and legs twitched violently.

I froze.

Half the fury burning inside me vanished in an instant.

What if...

What if this wasn't an act?

"Mom! Mom, don't scare me!" I dropped beside her.

She grabbed my arm with surprising strength, her fingernails digging into my skin. "Call 911... hurry... I'm dying..."

My hands shook so badly I almost dropped my phone as I dialed.

During the fifteen minutes it took the ambulance to arrive, my mother continued "fighting for her life."

I knelt beside her, my mind completely blank.

The emergency room hallway was cold and painfully bright. I sat in a plastic chair, trembling so hard I couldn't tell whether it was from the cold or from rage.

My stomach churned, and my throat tightened as if something huge had lodged there, impossible to swallow.

Half an hour later, the doctor stepped out.

"Are you Ms. Whitney Richmond's family?"

"I'm her daughter."

"Well, it's nothing serious. She had a stress response brought on by emotional distress. Her ECG is normal. Blood pressure's a little elevated, but she'll be fine after some rest."

Dr. Bennett removed his mask. "She doesn't even need medication."

I stared at him for three long seconds, unable to say a word.

No heart condition.

No angina.

No near-death emergency.

She'd faked the whole thing.

I borrowed a phone from one of the nurses and logged into the university application portal with trembling fingers.

A line of red text filled the screen.

This application cycle has been locked. No further changes may be made.

The deadline had passed forty-seven minutes earlier.

I handed the phone back to the nurse.

"Thank you." My voice was so flat it frightened even me.

At three in the morning, my mother was snoring loudly in her hospital bed.

I quietly reached beneath her pillow and retrieved my phone. I opened the anonymous local forum.

The original poster had updated the thread an hour earlier.

"Thanks for the advice. It worked.

"I faked passing out and got myself admitted to the ER. The little brat is sitting here crying her eyes out, watching over me. She doesn't dare bring up taking a gap year."

As I stared at the words "the little brat," I bit down so hard on my lip that I tasted blood. My fingers trembled, the tips having gone ice cold.

Those three words cut deeper than the poisonous advice itself.

The anonymous poster… was my mother.

September 1.The high-speed train left the state capital that morning.Four hours later, it pulled into my destination. Leaning against the window, I watched the landscape change from flat plains to rolling hills… from small towns to a sprawling city skyline.By the time I stepped out of the station, the sun was shining brightly.A giant banner stretched across the university entrance: "Welcome, Class of 2026!"Freshmen filled the campus, dragging suitcases and looking around with excitement.I stopped at the front gate and looked up at the stone monument engraved with the university's name.I'd whispered that name to myself through countless sleepless nights while hunched over practice problems at the tiny desk in my cramped apartment, while stocking shelves at the supermarket until two in the morning, and while Mom sneered, "What's the point of studying?"And now I was finally here.My phone buzzed. An unfamiliar number had sent a long message."Gemma, it's Uncle Derek. A week later in the detention center visitation room.Mom sat behind the glass divider, her hair a tangled mess and every trace of color gone from her face. The moment she saw me sit down, her eyes reddened with tears. But this time, she didn't cry. Instead, she clenched her jaw and leaned toward the glass."Don't get too smug, Gemma." Her voice was hoarse, thick with hatred."As long as I'm locked up, your reputation is ruined too. Everyone knows you're the monster who sent your own mother to prison."No university will want someone like you. Even if one lets you in, you'll never be a class representative. You'll never win a scholarship. And when you graduate, what employer is going to hire someone whose mother's behind bars?"You'll rot in this pathetic little city for the rest of your life."She stared at me, waiting for me to break.I looked back at her without saying a word.About ten seconds passed. Then I smiled. Not a cold smile or a bitter one.Just a slow smile, t

As the officers wrestled Martin to the floor, the thick gold chain around his neck snapped, sending beads scattering across the ballroom. The handcuffs clicked into place.Pinned to the floor, veins bulging in his neck, Martin twisted toward Mom and roared, "She's the one who took my $50,000! She practically handed her own daughter to us! Arrest her! She's the one behind all of this!"Mom stumbled backward in terror. "That's a lie! You came to me first!""I came to you?" Martin barked. "You were the one begging for help on that forum!"The two of them tore into each other like rabid dogs, screaming accusations in front of every relative in the room.By now, Uncle Derek had completely fallen apart. He spun around and slapped Mom hard across the face."This was all your stupid idea!"Then he immediately turned to the officers, bowing and nodding frantically. "Officers, I'll testify! She really did take the money! $50,000! It's hidden in a cookie jar under the bed at her house!"

The ballroom was so quiet that all anyone could hear was the steady hum of the air conditioner.Every pair of eyes was fixed on the projection screen. One image after another flashed across it.Mom's forum post asking how to change my college applications.ParkerDad: "Marry my son, and you'll get $50,000, not a penny less."Mom's thumbs-up.Then came the update she'd proudly posted afterward."Thanks for the advice. It worked perfectly. I pretended to faint and got admitted to the hospital. That ungrateful girl is crying her eyes out while taking care of me."Someone at the relatives' tables sucked in a sharp breath. Whispers spread through the room. More and more people turned to stare at Mom.She shot to her feet and charged toward the projector."It's fake! All of it is fake!"She reached for the projector's power cord, but tripped over a table leg and nearly crashed to the floor."She made it all up! That ungrateful little brat is framing me!"Standing at the microphone

The largest ballroom on the third floor of the Grand Oak was already packed by the time I pushed open the doors.Seven or eight tables were filled with Mom's relatives. Five or six more belonged to Martin's side of the family. At the center of the room, the head table was decorated with an elaborate engagement centerpiece.Upbeat celebration music blared through the speakers.Dressed entirely in black, I stepped inside. The room fell silent. It was as if someone had pulled the plug on every conversation at once. The moment Mom saw me, her face darkened. She jumped up from the head table, shoved through the crowd, and raised her hand to slap me."You actually showed up wearing black? On a day like this?"I caught her wrist before it could reach my face. "An engagement party? Funny. I thought this was where everyone came to split the profits."The color drained from Mom's face before anger flushed it bright red. "What kind of nonsense are you talking about?"Martin strolled ove
