We followed the attendant to an unmarked room away from the waiting room we'd been kept in for a little over half an hour.

I wasn't surprised they were all taking their time. It was normal for officials to draw these kinds of things out, either for their own benefit by starving their clients, or making them too aggravated to think properly.
