Chapter 12

Rita noticed Ray sitting alone in the living room, deep in thought.

"Ray, are you alright?" she asked.

Ray looked up at herand shook his head. "No, I can't stop thinking about Mirabelle," he admitted.

Rita nodded sympathetically and took the drink out of Ray's hand. "I understand, but drinking isn't the answer. Come on, let's get you to bed."

Ray allowed her to help him up and lead him to his bedroom. He was grateful for her assistance, but he couldn't shake the feeling that she was only doing it to gain his trust. He decided to keep his guard up around her from now on.

Rita helped Ray to his room and sat down on the edge of the bed next to him. She could see the pain in his eyes and wantedto help him.

"I'm sorry, Ray. I know what Mirabelle did was bad, but try not to hurt yourself by thinking about her," she said, placing a comforting hand on his back.

Ray sighed deeply. "I just can'thelp it, Rita. I thought she was different, but now I see that she never really cared for me."
