Marissa I sit in a chair in front of a mirror while a skinny and beautiful woman in her early thirties works her magic on my hair. I can barely recognize the woman that looks back at me from the other side of the looking glass. Gone are the dark circles around my eyes. Eyes that now shine with a beautiful blue color thanks to the carefully placed makeup. My lips are a slightly rosy red, not too strong and not too weak. And I had no idea that I had such prominent cheekbones. I asked for a natural look and I must admit that she did a fabulous job. There is no question that I am wearing makeup but it looks light and doesn’t take over my whole face. Marissa I sigh as I finally drop down on my bed after a late night shower. The time is well past midnight and I am exhausted after tonight's party. If I can call it a party. It wasn’t especially fun. First they wanted to take pictures of me and Antonio. Then of only me, then the ring, then Antonio. Then pictures were taken of Antonio holding my hand and showing off the ring. There were pictures taken on the stairs, next to a fountain and together with his family. Then I was introduced to a million different people. Politicians, rich men, powerful men. Marissa “Wh-what contracts?” My mom’s anxious voice cuts off dad's rambling and excuses. “All the contracts. Your membership to his casinos, all the loans. Everything! You signed that you would repay ten million dollars in one year! How did you think that you could gain such a ridiculous amount of money? And how could you agree to the terms? To give yourselves or me in payment if you failed to repay in cash?” My voice is pitched and by the end of my outburst I’m almost screaming. My heart is racing and I’m breathing hard. Antonio “Can I have a drink, please?” Marissa asks as she slumps down on a couch with a view of the back gardens. I look down at her taking in her appearance. Her skin is pale and so are her lips. Her eyes are rimmed red from crying and there are also prominent circles under her eyes, dark and blue. She looks exhausted. The light that usually shines in her beautiful eyes is not there. Marissa My head hurts, and my throat and my back and everything else as well. I am exhausted and feel cold to the bone. When I look at myself in the mirror I’m pale with dark circles around my eyes. Even my lips are pale. But none of that matters. That is not going to stop me from going to school this morning. I put on some makeup to make sure that I look my normal self when I head down to breakfast. I mostly sit quietly during breakfast, only answering direct questions. Marissa I’m confused as I wake up as to where I am before I recognize it as my room. The bed that usually is so comfortable feels too warm and at the same time too cold. The room is dark with the curtains drawn over the windows. By the light that manages to force its way through the cracks in curtains I can see that it’s still daytime. I push off the comforter and struggle to sit up in bed. I’m bathing in my own sweat. My head hurts and feels extremely heavy. I notice the IV connected to my hand and I furrow my brows in confusion. As my feet touch the carpet the door is opened and Antonio steps inside. He looks somber as his eyes search for me. An older gentleman with a bald head and a bushy gray mustache follows behind him. Marissa Antonio turns on the shower and then turns to me. “Take off your clothes.” I blink at him. Is he for real? Does he really think that I will shower with him in the room? He sighs and steps closer to me. He reaches for my nightgown (When did I get into the nightgown?) and starts to pull it up. I grab hold of my gown and glare at him. “I’m not showering with you in here!” My voice breaks every other word and some words just come out as a wheeze. “It is only a shower.” He pulls the garment over my head and then proceeds to pull down my panties. I’m too weak to fight against him and within a minute I stand naked under the showerhead. The warm water flows down my body, relaxing my muscles and rinsing away the sweat. It almost feels like the water can cleanse me from my cold. I feel myself swaying and my eyelids feel heavy as if I’m about to fall asleep.
