Chapter 3

Author: Tiptik
Zeke was wearing a suit and a dark green tie. He looked incredibly striking.

When I saw the birthday cake he was carrying, I realized what was going on.

It was Scarlett's birthday today. He was about to go celebrate with her.

"Okay, stop guessing. If I tell you what the present is, it won't be a surprise anymore. You'll just have to wait for me to get there. I'll be there soon," he said joyfully.

He was currently on the phone. I didn't know what Scarlett said on the other end, but it made him break out into a hearty laugh. His smile was so wide that I could even spot his canines.

He rarely smiled when he was with me.

Despite how happy he looked, he wiped the smile off of his face as soon as he caught me staring at him. He'd give Scarlett the world, but he wouldn't even spare me a small smile.

His expression instantly darkened. He turned away from me in a disgusted manner and didn't say a single word. Afterward, he swiftly changed into his shoes and left the house.

Zeke was going to give me the cold shoulder again. He'd done the same thing in the past, and it was always because of Scarlett.

Every time that happened, I'd do everything in my power to appease him. Even if he didn't reply to a single one of my texts, I'd still act warm and friendly toward him.

Instead of doing what I used to do, I searched up some recipes of foreign foods and practiced cooking them at home. I needed to start becoming accustomed to life overseas before I actually moved over there.

While I was lying on my bed, I came across Scarlett's most recent post on my social media app.

"Thank you for yet another birthday gift this year. Grateful to always have you by my side," she wrote.

"I feel so emotional. I'm so glad that you're happy, Scarlett," one of Zeke's male friends commented under her post.

I checked the likes and realized that all of Zeke's close friends had liked the post.

His friends had never respected me. In their opinion, I was just someone that got in between Zeke and Scarlett's relationship. According to them, Zeke would be much happier if I didn't exist.

I scrolled through Zeke's social media activity and realized that they were right.

"Happy birthday, my princess," Zeke commented.

I read through their online interactions emotionlessly.

One of his friends even replied to him and wrote, "I don't think you should be posting that. If Joanna sees that comment, she'll probably throw a huge fit. You know how petty she is."

Once, I gently reminded Zeke to keep his distance from Scarlett. After all, he was a man while she was a woman. It wouldn't be appropriate for him to interact with her so much when he had a girlfriend.

After his friends heard about the incident, they called me petty and narrow-minded. They even mocked me and said I was being too controlling. They claimed I was robbing him of his friendship with Scarlett.

When Zeke heard what his friends said to me, he implicitly agreed with them. On top of that, he even told me off and said I should be more generous as a woman.

Unlike what his friend claimed, I did not throw a huge fit. Instead, I exited the app and began to watch some videos online instead. Afterward, I ended up falling asleep on the bed.

When Zeke came home, I was sound asleep. He woke me up in an annoyed manner and yelled, "I've been outside the entire night. Do you not care about me, Joanna?

"My friend's girlfriend has been blowing up his phone the entire night. You didn't even call me once! What is the meaning of this?"

I was staring at him with a confused expression. I had no idea why he was so angry.

I used to do exactly what his friend's girlfriend did. When that happened, he said, "You're my girlfriend, not my prison warden. Can you be less controlling? I feel like I have no freedom because of you."

Now that I had given him space, he was accusing me of not caring about him. I actually didn't know what he wanted me to do.

Despite my frustration, I didn't bring up the past.

"Why would I need to blow up your phone if you were hanging out with your friends? Since you and Scarlett are just friends, I have nothing to worry about," I replied nonchalantly.

Zeke looked like he was in disbelief. He was probably shocked that I mentioned Scarlett's name without sounding bitter or angry.

Zeke grabbed my shoulders and pleaded, "I told you—I'd spend every single holiday with you from here on out."I removed his hands and scoffed. "It's a shame we won't have a future together, then."He was sobbing hysterically. He wouldn't leave me alone. He insisted that he didn't want to break up and that he wanted to leave the country with me. Since he wouldn't take no for an answer, I eventually gave in.Overjoyed and relieved, he pulled me into a hug. I was enjoying our final embrace with a bitter feeling in my heart.…One random morning, I quietly packed my bags. I opened the door to the bedroom and glanced at Zeke, who was still sound asleep. I softly bid him goodbye before glancing at my home, feeling nostalgic. If everything went as planned, this was probably the last time I'd ever see this place again. After leaving my home country, I planned on staying abroad for the rest of my life.I took a taxi to the airport alone. Afterward, I sat on a chair and waited for my tu

Zeke took out his phone and called Scarlett. He stood in front of me and put the call on speaker. "Did you miss me, Zeke?" Scarlett asked gleefully after picking up the call.Scarlett's sudden question made Zeke feel awkward and anxious."Stop joking around, Scarlett," he hastily tried to resolve the situation. Scarlett didn't expect him to speak to her like that. If I had to guess, that was probably how they interacted with each other in private. When she froze, Zeke continued, "I think we should stop contacting each other so often, Scarlett. I have a girlfriend, after all—it's not appropriate for me to have such a close relationship with another woman."Scarlett couldn't believe what she was hearing. "What did you just say, Zeke?" she asked in disbelief. "Could you repeat that?"Zeke took a deep breath and said with a raised voice, "I said we should stop contacting each other so often. Do you understand me?""Oh… I get it now. Your control freak of a girlfriend is jealou

I could tell that Zeke was hesitating. So, I maturely offered him a way out. "You should go pick her up. Just drop me off at a junction somewhere up front.""I can't do that—what about you?" he objected anxiously. "I think it's better if I drive you all the way there."I smiled and said, "It's fine. I can just get a taxi. You can just drop me off here."I pointed at the side of the road in front. He froze for a moment but stopped the car anyway. After I got out of the vehicle, he told me, "I'll make sure to head home earlier today."I nodded in response. He stared at me with a concerned expression and asked again, "Do you think you'll have trouble getting a cab? I could tell Scarlett to get to the venue by herself if it means less trouble for you."I looked up at him and urged him to get going. "I'll be fine. You should hurry up and go. It's not nice to be late."Eventually, Zeke's car drove off. I submitted my paperwork and checked the date on my phone. After doing some calc

Zeke stared at me in disbelief. He didn't think I would turn him down—let alone ask him to bring someone else.I used to long for something like this to happen.I wasn't lying to him, though. I wasn't free tomorrow. I still had a lot of paperwork to submit before I left the country. Zeke was no longer smiling. He looked extremely disappointed. "What are you doing tomorrow? I could come with you," he suggested nervously."Oh, I have some travel documents I need to get in order. I'm afraid I won't be able to make it to the engagement party," I explained casually. Then, I continued, "It wouldn't make sense for you to miss your good friend's engagement party, though. You should go—I can get everything sorted myself."Upon hearing this, he asked in a careful manner, "If you can't make it, can I bring Scarlett?"Unlike how I was before, I didn't get emotional when I heard him mention Scarlett's name. "Sure," I replied with a smile. He scanned my face and tried to check if I was

I couldn't help but cry for a short while. I found the entire situation laughable. At that point, I'd lost count of how many times Zeke had abandoned me for Scarlett. I'd gotten used to this feeling by now.I looked at a couple who were strolling down the street while holding hands. Suddenly, I remembered that Zeke and I used to do that, too.As the taxi drove off, I couldn't quite see the couple anymore. My memory of Zeke was starting to become a blur, too. After I reached home, Zeke sent me an update. "I just got Scarlett back to her place. She keeps throwing up. I don't know if I'll be able to go home tonight," his message read.My mind went blank as I stared at my phone screen. If my memory served, this was the first time Zeke had ever sent me an update.I once asked him how many people were going to a get-together, and he thought I was trying to make a big fuss out of nothing."Am I obligated to tell you every single detail? Don't you find that exhausting?"Afterward, I

"What did you just say, Uncle Steve? What do you mean by 'leaving the country'?" Zeke asked."Haven't you heard?" Steve replied. "Joanna is leaving the country soon. In fact, I think this is the last time we're going to have a meal with her for the foreseeable future. It'll be quite difficult to meet up with her when she travels abroad."Steve didn't know about my relationship with Zeke. So, he wasn't surprised that the latter didn't know about my plans.Zeke's eyes welled up with tears when he heard that. Without a second thought, he got up and proceeded to drag me out of the room with him.I stood in the corner and didn't say a word. Moments later, he broke the silence."You're going abroad? What are you saying? Why didn't you discuss this with me? Why didn't you tell me about it?"His voice was trembling. He looked shocked and afraid. When I snapped back into my senses, I replied, "Oh, this? You and Scarlett were at the amusement park when I got the news. So, I didn't want to
