I shrugged in response to Kiara’s question. I didn’t think I felt any different. I certainly hadn’t sensed my mate yet. Everything was about the same as it’d always been.
“Well, your scent is different. It’s stronger, like it’s trying to beckon someone. Same thing that happened to Aida’s,” Kiara offered, sniffing at the air around me.
“Either that or you really need to take a shower,” Aida interjected, wrinkling her nose as though my scent was repulsive.
I gaped at her in mock offense. While they both began laughing so hard that they rolled onto their sides, clutching their stomachs as though desperate for air.
Ridiculous, I thought with a roll of my eyes, though I couldn’t help laughing right along with them.
“Hey, no one told you guys to come into my room and climb into bed with me,” I retorted haughtily.
“We had to come wake your lazy ass up. Come on! We need to go for our morning run.”
“Alright,” I replied with a sigh as I stretched out my limbs. “Let me throw on one of Enzo’s old shirts.”
I pushed myself up from the mass of limbs that had become my bed, shoving my friends aside, before reaching into an overstuffed dresser drawer and yanking out a ratty t-shirt.
I always elected to wear something old and baggy when I went to shift; that way I wouldn’t overdress just to get nude again. This was a common practice for females in the pack. Just as it was common for the males to wear nothing but shorts.
“Speaking of Enzo…” Kiara cooed, practically singing as she spoke. “Do you think there’s any chance he could be your mate?”
I should’ve known she’d ask this. Should’ve known they wouldn’t hesitate to question me about Enzo. He was my not-so-secret shame.
“Wouldn’t that be perfect!” Aida squealed in excitement. “Then you’d be the luna, and I’d be your beta! You wouldn’t even have to move out of the packhouse! Plus, you’ve been in love with that boy forever. It’d only make sense.”
She wasn’t wrong; I’d been crushing on Enzo for as long as I could remember. Even after he’d hurt me in the past, I still couldn’t let it go. But I doubted that anyone would blame me for that. After all, he was the most handsome male that I’d ever seen with his soft chestnut hair, enticing green eyes, square jaw, and golden skin.
He had a body that would make a Greek God envious – chiseled to perfection. Not too bulky, but definitely not thin or wiry. Moreover, he was set to be the next alpha of Crescent Moon, which was every she-wolf’s dream.
Honestly, if it wasn’t for his notorious reputation as a womanizer and our complicated past, then he would make a great mate for any she-wolf. Certainly a mate worth showing off and bragging about.
“Yeah right, Enzo barely even knows I exist anymore. If it wasn’t for the fact that we live in the same house, I don’t think that he would even know my name anymore. As it is, he never refers to me by my first name; he always calls me Hala.”
When we were young, Enzo and I were very close. It was easy to be best friends because we were the only two children who lived permanently in the packhouse.
It was common for alphas and their betas to only have one pup, as it was necessary for them to focus their time on the pack as a whole. They produced an heir, then stopped, while other families in the pack tended to be much larger.
As we grew older, our relationship changed. He was my first love, and I thought he’d be my only one. But as we continued to grow, we slowly went our separate ways. We were into different things, but the love was still there.
Then one day, we stopped spending any time together at all. He started to avoid me, and on the occasions that he couldn’t, he barely acknowledged me. It was as though I’d never meant anything to him. Like we hadn’t grown up together and been nearly inseparable for years.
I had no idea what I’d done wrong to cause him to become so distant. He never offered an explanation, even though our relationship had been quite intense right before that. Never explained his sudden distaste for me. Yet, sadly and stupidly, no matter how cold he became, my feelings for him never changed. I knew it was ridiculous and I hated myself for it, but I couldn’t help it.
No matter what I did. No matter how hard I tried. I couldn’t get over this silly little crush of mine. Could never completely move on. I was a glutton for punishment.
“She wouldn’t want to be mated to that prick anyway,” Kiara scoffed, ignorant to my inner turmoil. “He’s so full of himself. He thinks that he’s the Goddess’s gift to she-wolves. Gag!”
I giggled along with Kiara even though I knew she was wrong. I did want to be mated to Enzo. I despised myself for it. But it was the ugly truth.

The three of us finally made our way downstairs. My parents were sitting in the kitchen that was private to our family. My father sat at the round, wooden table sipping on coffee while he looked over paperwork, a frown permanently etched across his face. He was a very serious man, but he adored me, and I never doubted that.
My mother worked away behind him, likely baking something sweet for my birthday dinner that night. She hummed to herself while she worked, as she often did. She was definitely the softer side of their mate pairing.
“Good morning,” I chirped.
“Happy birthday, Marvel!” my mother cheered as she wiped her hands free of flour before embracing me in a tight hug.
“Happy birthday, baby girl!” my father offered, glancing up from his work momentarily.
“Thank you,” I replied, leaning down and giving him a quick peck on the cheek.
“You girls off for a run?” my mother questioned as she quickly returned to her baking – always keeping busy.
“Yeah. Thought we’d get a quick one in before Aida and I have to head to the Wolf’s Den to get everything ready for the party,” Kiara explained.
“Sounds like fun! Marvel, make sure that you keep that nose of yours to the wind. You never know when you may catch the scent of your mate,” my mother instructed.
Marvel HalaAnd it was that comment that finally snapped me out of my denial. All flirtatious pretenses gone when faced with this line of thinking.Under no circumstances was that an appropriate thing to say, and it’d be an extremely inappropriate thing for him to do.You never shunned your mate for the touch of another, not if you intended to accept them. And if you didn’t, then the noble thing to do was to reject them immediately. You did not want to risk the bond strengthening before then, as it would only hurt more.Spending a night with another wolf, while you knew where your mate lay, was the ultimate form of disrespect. I was not interested in any wolf that would even joke about such a thing.Mating was meant to be something special and important. This was a gift from the Moon Goddess, and you shouldn’t take such a gift lightly.I quickly started pulling away from Alpha Harm, putting some much-needed space between us.I was about to let him know exactly what I thought of him, b
Marvel Hala“Thanks for the advice, Enzo,” Alpha Harm offered with a nod. “But I’m quite happy with my choice of date for the evening. I can’t imagine a more alluring she-wolf than the one I already have next to me.”I shot Enzo a sneer and stuck my tongue out at him. It was childish, I know. I’d literally just been saying how I’d grown up, but could you really blame me when he was behaving this way?I knew I should’ve acted more maturely. But I didn’t care for his attitude. If he didn’t find me attractive, then whatever, I’d find a way to get over it.But how dare he try to redirect my dates’ attention to another she-wolf. It would be one thing if Kiara were Harm’s mate. Then it’d be understandable to any wolf if he ditched me for her. Otherwise, it would be extremely rude to toss me aside for another in the middle of our impromptu date. And for Enzo to suggest otherwise was just completely inappropriate. Enzo always knew exactly how to get under my skin.“What about your mate?” Enzo
Marvel HalaDraped on Enzo’s arm was a bleach blonde woman wearing a fitted black cocktail dress with a plunging neckline. Her hair was up so that you could clearly see all of the skin that she’d left exposed. Her chest was pressed against Enzo’s arm as she clung to him for dear life, a fake smile plastered on her heavily made-up face.Cora, I internally growled.Cora was well known around the pack. She’d slept with almost every unmated male and, rumor had it, even a couple of mated ones.I knew her for a different reason, though; I knew her because we’d gone to school together and she had bullied every single female in that place. I couldn’t stand her.But that didn’t explain my overwhelming anger in that moment.I shouldn’t have been surprised that Enzo had brought a date to dinner. He often brought dates to pack functions. For some inexplicable reason, though, tonight I was enraged by it. I wanted to rip her arms away from him and threaten to break her hands if she ever touched him
Marvel HalaIt’d been a few weeks since my birthday, and I hadn’t caught another whiff of my mate anywhere. I’d gone out running, the same time, every single morning since.I’d hoped I would catch him out there again. But there’d been no sign of him. No scent on the air. No blur of an unknown form running through the underbrush. Nothing.I was beginning to seriously think that he really might be a rogue and perhaps he was just passing through when I scented him. If that was the case, it was probably better that we didn’t meet. I didn’t want to face a rejection, and I certainly did not want to go rogue. This way, we could simply forget the other one existed and move on with our lives. If we never saw each other, then it would never be a problem.“Marvel, sweetheart, are you in there?” my mother’s voice called from the other side of the door at the same time that a knock resounded.“Yeah, Mom, come on in.”The door swung open slowly, and my mother stepped inside. She scanned my room be
Marvel Hala“Well, I wanted to be here specifically for you, Marvel,” Daray stepped forward, offering me a playful wink.I giggled at him, brushing him off. Daray was a notorious flirt, and it was impossible to take him seriously.“Thanks, Daray. I appreciate it,” I said with a dismissive smile and a playful wink.“I’m serious, Marvel,” he whined like a child. “Come closer. We need to smell each other. You never know, you might just be lucky enough to be my mate,” he teased, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively.Admittedly, Daray was good-looking, but I would pity his mate a bit. She was definitely going to have to put up with a bit of a wandering eye with him, and while I didn’t think he could act on it, that could be a hard pill for a lot of women to swallow.“Daray,” Enzo suddenly snarled, his voice sharp and his tone threatening.Everyone at the table stopped and stared at him, wondering what’d set him off again as he bared his teeth. But then, like a switch had been flipped, the lo
Marvel HalaAfter we’d taken a few drinks each and were beginning to slowly feel the effects of the alcohol, we decided it was time to dance.I led my friends to the dance floor, and we began to sway with the music. I was letting my slight buzz settle in, knowing that it would take a lot more to get me where I wanted to be for tonight. As a wolf, I had an incredibly high tolerance.Carl, a male I knew well, made his way over to me. He whispered happy birthday in my ear before placing his hands on either side of my hips and pulling me towards him, our bodies pressing together, the heat between us growing. I smiled as I began to grind myself against him, moving in rhythm with the beat.Carl wasn’t the sexiest male in the pack, but he was attractive enough with his short, curly blonde hair and his sympathetic eyes. He was well-built like most wolves were, though a little too bulky for my tastes. However, he would do…for now.Don’t judge me. I was a she-wolf in her prime. So, what if I in
