Marvel Hala

My father grumbled something under his breath, clearly not happy about my mother’s assertion. He wasn’t ready for his little girl to move on and be mated despite my age.

He often chastised me for growing up too quickly. I always responded with a laugh and informed him that there was nothing I could really do to stop it. He always responded with, “Try harder.”

“Don’t worry, mom. I’ll keep a lookout for my mate. I promise.”

This time a small growl escaped from my father’s lips, his wolf in full disagreement.

“Oh, you hush now, Jonas. Every wolf must find their mate sometime. The sooner the better,” she lectured.

My friends and I merely giggled at the exchange before heading out towards the back of the packhouse. It was just a short walk through the garden that led to the tree line. And once we were safely tucked into the trees, we shed our clothing and shifted into our wolf forms.

Our bones cracked and reformed. Our limbs shifted. Our teeth became fangs, and our nails turned to claws. Fur sprouted across our flesh as our ears reshaped and moved to the tops of our heads.

It used to be a rather uncomfortable process, but over time you grew used to it. After a while, it became just as natural as being human.

I shook out my shaggy, midnight black coat and stretched my limbs. It felt good to be in my wolf-form again. It hadn’t been long. But there was something about being in our wolf forms that was so freeing.

We were stronger as wolves. We were faster. Our senses were heightened. We were one with nature. One with the earth. One with the moon. Our place in the world making sense in a way that nothing else could.

I looked to my friends. Kiara with her copper-colored fur and Aida with her chocolate-brown coat. And I knew they felt much the same way I did. That’s why we never missed a run. Why we never gave up the opportunity to feel this way.

We took off deeper into the forest, running as fast as our legs could carry us. Yipping for joy as we went, weaving in and out of the trees. We ran for what seemed like miles without a care in the world. Wind whipping through our fur. Dirt under our paws. Plants left trampled under our escapades.

This was how life was meant to be, enjoying time with your friends, immersed in nature. Simply free.

I tried not to think about the whole mate situation while we were out there. I wanted to be completely in the moment. Wild and without a care.

That was until I caught a strange scent on the wind. The intoxicating aroma causing me to suddenly skid to a stop and sniff at the air.

The unexpected smell of a cool breeze blowing over the sea – just a hint of salt in the air.

It’d been years since I’d smelt something similar. We’d taken a family trip to the beach and rented a small yacht to spend a few days out on the ocean. I loved the smell of the fresh ocean air; it’d stuck with me long after we’d returned home like a tangible memory that I carried. I often thought about that trip and had longed to return to the seaside to feel that way again.

Now, suddenly, miles and miles away from any possible source, I inhaled it just as clearly as I had when we’d stayed out on that yacht. I couldn’t explain it. Didn’t understand how it was possible. But it was.

I found myself drawn to the scent. Desperate to find the source. To inhale it as though it were the air I needed to breathe. The only source of my survival. I needed it. Depended on it. Was intoxicated by it like a drug.

I began running after it before I even knew what I was doing. Not that I could’ve stopped myself even if I had.

“Marvel, where are you going?” Kiara questioned through the mindlink.

“I have to find where that scent is coming from,” I explained, and no more words were needed; they simply began to follow.

This was crazy. We were only in the very early hours of my birthday. It was extremely rare to find one’s mate so soon, and I’d be astonished if I had. It’d barely make sense. Especially out here, in the middle of the woods. I know that we were wolves, but that seemed a little too on the nose.

I continued to track the scent in silence. Until I suddenly realized that we were coming back around toward the packhouse. We were drifting closer and closer to the main pack lands, and I was certain we were closing in on it – closing in on my mate.

When suddenly it was gone. Disappearing as quickly as it came.

“It’s gone,” I whimpered.

“What?! What do you mean it’s gone?” Aida questioned, clearly as confused as I was.

“I don’t know. It was there a minute ago. Clear as day. But now I can’t find it. It’s like he suddenly vanished.”

I turned and began walking home without another word. I didn’t want to talk about what happened. My mind was reeling. I needed time to process.

“Maybe it was a rogue,” Kiara suddenly remarked after we’d finished shifting and tossed on our clothes.

“What?”

“What if it was a rogue, passing through our territory that you smelled?”

“Maybe,” I shrugged dismissively. “I’m not going to worry about it too much.”

That’s what I said out loud, but the truth was that I was worried, very worried. My emotions were all over the place, a complete whirlwind assaulting my mind, as I attempted to hold it together. If that scent belonged to a rogue, then that would mean that my mate is a rogue.

And that would be a big problem.

Our pack didn’t take kindly to rogues, and it would be difficult to gain their acceptance. Of course, that was assuming the rogue wanted to be found and wanted to join a pack at all.

If he didn’t, then I’d be forced to choose between my pack and my mate. That was something I absolutely didn’t want to have to do.

  • Some Mate You Are...   Howl in the Night

Marvel HalaAnd it was that comment that finally snapped me out of my denial. All flirtatious pretenses gone when faced with this line of thinking.Under no circumstances was that an appropriate thing to say, and it’d be an extremely inappropriate thing for him to do.You never shunned your mate for the touch of another, not if you intended to accept them. And if you didn’t, then the noble thing to do was to reject them immediately. You did not want to risk the bond strengthening before then, as it would only hurt more.Spending a night with another wolf, while you knew where your mate lay, was the ultimate form of disrespect. I was not interested in any wolf that would even joke about such a thing.Mating was meant to be something special and important. This was a gift from the Moon Goddess, and you shouldn’t take such a gift lightly.I quickly started pulling away from Alpha Harm, putting some much-needed space between us.I was about to let him know exactly what I thought of him, b

  • Some Mate You Are...   Alpha Attitudes

Marvel Hala“Thanks for the advice, Enzo,” Alpha Harm offered with a nod. “But I’m quite happy with my choice of date for the evening. I can’t imagine a more alluring she-wolf than the one I already have next to me.”I shot Enzo a sneer and stuck my tongue out at him. It was childish, I know. I’d literally just been saying how I’d grown up, but could you really blame me when he was behaving this way?I knew I should’ve acted more maturely. But I didn’t care for his attitude. If he didn’t find me attractive, then whatever, I’d find a way to get over it.But how dare he try to redirect my dates’ attention to another she-wolf. It would be one thing if Kiara were Harm’s mate. Then it’d be understandable to any wolf if he ditched me for her. Otherwise, it would be extremely rude to toss me aside for another in the middle of our impromptu date. And for Enzo to suggest otherwise was just completely inappropriate. Enzo always knew exactly how to get under my skin.“What about your mate?” Enzo

  • Some Mate You Are...   Dining with Alphas

Marvel HalaDraped on Enzo’s arm was a bleach blonde woman wearing a fitted black cocktail dress with a plunging neckline. Her hair was up so that you could clearly see all of the skin that she’d left exposed. Her chest was pressed against Enzo’s arm as she clung to him for dear life, a fake smile plastered on her heavily made-up face.Cora, I internally growled.Cora was well known around the pack. She’d slept with almost every unmated male and, rumor had it, even a couple of mated ones.I knew her for a different reason, though; I knew her because we’d gone to school together and she had bullied every single female in that place. I couldn’t stand her.But that didn’t explain my overwhelming anger in that moment.I shouldn’t have been surprised that Enzo had brought a date to dinner. He often brought dates to pack functions. For some inexplicable reason, though, tonight I was enraged by it. I wanted to rip her arms away from him and threaten to break her hands if she ever touched him

  • Some Mate You Are...   Visitors

Marvel HalaIt’d been a few weeks since my birthday, and I hadn’t caught another whiff of my mate anywhere. I’d gone out running, the same time, every single morning since.I’d hoped I would catch him out there again. But there’d been no sign of him. No scent on the air. No blur of an unknown form running through the underbrush. Nothing.I was beginning to seriously think that he really might be a rogue and perhaps he was just passing through when I scented him. If that was the case, it was probably better that we didn’t meet. I didn’t want to face a rejection, and I certainly did not want to go rogue. This way, we could simply forget the other one existed and move on with our lives. If we never saw each other, then it would never be a problem.“Marvel, sweetheart, are you in there?” my mother’s voice called from the other side of the door at the same time that a knock resounded.“Yeah, Mom, come on in.”The door swung open slowly, and my mother stepped inside. She scanned my room be

  • Some Mate You Are...   Enzo's Attitude

Marvel Hala“Well, I wanted to be here specifically for you, Marvel,” Daray stepped forward, offering me a playful wink.I giggled at him, brushing him off. Daray was a notorious flirt, and it was impossible to take him seriously.“Thanks, Daray. I appreciate it,” I said with a dismissive smile and a playful wink.“I’m serious, Marvel,” he whined like a child. “Come closer. We need to smell each other. You never know, you might just be lucky enough to be my mate,” he teased, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively.Admittedly, Daray was good-looking, but I would pity his mate a bit. She was definitely going to have to put up with a bit of a wandering eye with him, and while I didn’t think he could act on it, that could be a hard pill for a lot of women to swallow.“Daray,” Enzo suddenly snarled, his voice sharp and his tone threatening.Everyone at the table stopped and stared at him, wondering what’d set him off again as he bared his teeth. But then, like a switch had been flipped, the lo

  • Some Mate You Are...   The Wolf's Den

Marvel HalaAfter we’d taken a few drinks each and were beginning to slowly feel the effects of the alcohol, we decided it was time to dance.I led my friends to the dance floor, and we began to sway with the music. I was letting my slight buzz settle in, knowing that it would take a lot more to get me where I wanted to be for tonight. As a wolf, I had an incredibly high tolerance.Carl, a male I knew well, made his way over to me. He whispered happy birthday in my ear before placing his hands on either side of my hips and pulling me towards him, our bodies pressing together, the heat between us growing. I smiled as I began to grind myself against him, moving in rhythm with the beat.Carl wasn’t the sexiest male in the pack, but he was attractive enough with his short, curly blonde hair and his sympathetic eyes. He was well-built like most wolves were, though a little too bulky for my tastes. However, he would do…for now.Don’t judge me. I was a she-wolf in her prime. So, what if I in
