Morning came quietly.

For several seconds after opening his eyes, Max didn't remember where he was.

Then he turned his head.

Nate was asleep on the floor beside the bed, one arm thrown over his face, the blanket half tangled around his legs.

Max stared at him.

Last night came rushing back.

The conversation.

The fear.

The words he'd finally managed to say.

I think I might be gay.

And then the promise he'd made to himself.

Today.

He was going to tell them today.

His stomach twisted.

He almost changed his mind.

Almost.

But then he remembered what Nate had told him.

You don't have to figure out the rest of your life today.

And:

Whatever happens, you don't become any less worthy of love.

Max slowly sat up.

"Nate."

Nothing.

"Nate."

A groan came from the floor.

"What?"

"Morning."

Nate opened one eye.

"You've been awake for thirty seconds and you're already annoying me."

Max smiled nervously.

"I'm scared."

That woke Nate properly.

He pushed himself upright.

"About this morning?"

Max nodded.

Nate studied his face.

"You don't have to do it."

"I know."

"You can wait."

"I know."

"But you want to?"

Max swallowed.

"Yeah."

Nate nodded.

"Then we'll do it."

----------------------

Breakfast was already being prepared downstairs.

Sarah stood at the stove, humming quietly while frying eggs.

Micah sat at the table with a cup of coffee, scrolling through his phone.

Neither seemed to notice anything unusual when Nate and Max walked in.

"Good morning," Sarah said.

"Morning."

Max's voice sounded strangely small.

Sarah glanced over her shoulder.

"You okay?"

"Yeah."

Micah looked up.

"You look like you've seen a ghost."

"Thanks."

"I'm serious."

"I'm fine."

Nate pulled out a chair.

Max sat down.

He couldn't eat.

The plate Sarah placed in front of him remained untouched.

His fingers kept twisting together beneath the table.

Nate noticed.

So did Micah.

Finally, Sarah turned off the stove.

"All right."

She dried her hands on a kitchen towel.

"What is going on?"

Max's heart began pounding.

Nate looked at him.

Not pushing.

Just reminding him that he was there.

Max took a breath.

"I need to tell you guys something."

Micah immediately put his phone down.

Sarah pulled out the chair beside him.

"Okay."

Max stared at the table.

The words were there.

He had practiced them in his head all night.

Hundreds of times.

But suddenly they seemed impossible.

His throat tightened.

"Mom..."

Sarah reached across the table and took his hand.

"You can tell me."

That nearly broke him.

He looked at her.

Then at Micah.

Then at Nate.

"I..."

His voice cracked.

He swallowed.

"I'm gay."

Silence.

For one terrifying heartbeat, nobody moved.

Max's heart slammed against his ribs.

Say something.

Please say something.

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

Max immediately panicked.

"I'm sorry."

Sarah shook her head.

"No."

"I didn't mean to—"

"No, sweetheart."

She stood so quickly her chair scraped against the floor.

She crossed the small distance between them and wrapped her arms around him.

Max froze.

Then she held him tighter.

"Oh, baby."

The tears he'd been fighting spilled instantly.

"I'm sorry."

"Don't apologize."

"I should've told you."

"You don't have to apologize for this."

"But I was scared."

"I know."

"I thought you'd be disappointed."

Sarah pulled back enough to hold his face between her hands.

"Never."

Her voice trembled.

"Never, ever think that."

Max cried harder.

"I love you."

"I love you too."

"No matter what?"

"Absolutely no matter what."

She kissed his forehead.

"You are my son."

"That doesn't change."

"Nothing about who you are can make me stop loving you."

Max closed his eyes.

For months he'd been carrying the fear of this moment.

He'd imagined anger.

Disappointment.

Silence.

Rejection.

Instead, he was standing in his mother's arms.

Safe.

Loved.

Still hers.

----------------------

Micah stood up.

For a moment he simply looked at his brother.

Max wiped his face.

"I'm sorry."

Micah frowned.

"For what?"

"For everything."

"What?"

"The way I've acted."

Micah's expression softened.

Max continued.

"I was angry all the time."

"I yelled at you."

"I said horrible things."

"I blamed you for leaving."

"I blamed Mom."

"I made everything difficult."

Micah walked toward him.

"I know."

"I'm sorry."

"You don't have to—"

"I do."

Max's voice shook.

"I know Dad died."

"I know you didn't leave because you didn't care."

"I just..."

He struggled to breathe through the tears.

"I was so angry."

Micah nodded.

"I know."

"I thought everybody left me."

Micah's eyes became wet.

"Max..."

"I thought you left too."

Micah pulled him into his arms.

Max broke.

His face buried against Micah's shoulder as years of anger finally seemed to collapse under the weight of everything he'd been holding inside.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

Micah tightened his arms around him.

"You're my little brother."

"I don't care how angry you got."

"I don't care how many stupid things you said."

"I love you."

Max clung to him.

Micah rubbed his back.

"And for the record..."

He pulled back and wiped his own eyes.

"You're brave."

Max laughed weakly through his tears.

"I don't feel brave."

"You told us something you were terrified to say."

"That's brave."

Micah squeezed his shoulder.

"I'm proud of you."

Max looked at him.

"Really?"

"Really."

----------------------

Nate had remained quiet through most of it.

He didn't want to intrude on a moment that belonged to the family.

But Max eventually looked toward him.

Their eyes met.

Nate smiled.

A small, reassuring smile.

Max smiled back.

Sarah noticed.

She looked between them.

"How long have you known?"

Nate shrugged.

"Not long."

"Did he tell you?"

Max nodded.

"Last night."

Sarah looked at him.

"You talked to Nate?"

"Yeah."

Nate said quietly, "He was scared."

Sarah's eyes softened.

"Thank you for listening to him."

"Always."

Max looked down.

"I didn't know how to tell you."

Sarah came back to him and brushed his hair away from his forehead.

"You could have told me tomorrow."

"Next year."

"Ten years from now."

"I would've listened."

Max nodded.

"I know that now."

Sarah smiled through her tears.

"Good."

----------------------

They returned to breakfast eventually.

The food had gone cold.

Nobody cared.

Micah reheated the eggs while Sarah made fresh toast.

Max finally picked up his fork.

Nate watched him take a bite.

"See?"

Max looked at him.

"What?"

"You survived."

Max rolled his eyes.

"Shut up."

Nate laughed.

"There he is."

Micah smiled.

"Definitely still Max."

Sarah reached across the table and squeezed his hand.

Max looked around.

His mother.

His brother.

Nate.

The three people sitting around him had somehow become the safest place in his world.

Nothing outside these walls had changed.

School would still be school.

People might still judge him.

There would probably be awkward conversations.

Questions he wouldn't know how to answer.

Days when he would doubt himself.

But the fear he'd carried into the kitchen that morning had lost some of its power.

Because he'd said the words.

And the world hadn't ended.

Instead, his mother had hugged him.

His brother had called him brave.

And Nate had looked at him like nothing about him had changed.

Max took another bite of toast.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Can we not tell anyone else yet?"

"Of course."

"Just us."

"Just us."

Micah nodded.

"Whenever you're ready."

Max looked at Nate.

"And you?"

Nate smiled.

"Your secret is safe with me."

Max exhaled.

For the first time in a very long time, he felt like he could breathe.

----------------------

After breakfast, Nate returned upstairs to finish packing.

His suitcase waited beside the bed.

His clinical rotation.

His future.

His departure.

But when he looked at the empty space on the floor where he'd slept the night before, he smiled.

Downstairs, he could hear Max laughing at something Micah had said.

Sarah's laughter followed.

The sound traveled through the house.

Warm.

Alive.

For months, Nate had thought of this place as somewhere he'd returned because he had nowhere else to go.

Now he understood something.

Home wasn't the absence of pain.

It wasn't a place where nobody ever left.

Home was the place where, even after everything changed, you could still say:

This is who I am.

And hear someone answer:

We love you anyway.

Nate closed his suitcase.

He still had to leave.

But this time, leaving didn't feel like abandonment.

Because Max knew something he'd never known before.

People could leave a room.

They could leave a town.

They could even leave for years.

And still come back.

Still love you.

Still choose you.

Still be family.
