LOGINThe faint sound of paper being flipped could be heard in the luxurious office. The man on the office chair, pressed his temples, his eyes on the document he was reading.
Just then, the door to the office was opened and a man, dressed in suit came in, looking dapper and brisk. "Mr. Bertram " Isak called, dropping the pictures he was holding on the table. "I got this just as you informed. He was last seen at the club." Len looked up from his book, his eyes slightly dimming as he gaped at the pictures. He picked one of the pictures and smirked. "Looks like he's enjoying life. Continue to keep an eye on him, he's as tricky as the tortoise. And don't let him know he's being tailed." "Okay Sir" Isak answered, grabbing the pictures from the table. He arranged them very well and turned to leave. However as he moved an inch, he stopped in his tracks as if he recalled something. "Sir, your name seem to be on the trending list again. There are many people asking about your relationship with Miss Melissa. Your Grandfather asked you to clarify it in the mean time." Len seemed to stop what he was doing as he gave it a thought. "There is nothing between us. I've clarified this for a very long time. Ask Melissa to do it this time." "Yes Sir" Isak answered. "She said she will be your partner for tonight's masquerade ball too." Len was lost in thought. He didn't want to attend the masquerade ball because it had nothing to do with him but as usual Melissa had informed his Mother beforehand. Since his Mother was aware of it, Len just couldn't say no. "Prepare an outfit for both of us" Len let out a sigh. "Okay sir." Isak left to do his boss's wish. Len was left brooding in the silent yet extensive confines of his office. Something was eating him up but he could not yet place a finger on it. The last six years of his life have been full of ups and downs. His 'ups' had been mostly his business. His 'downs' were certainly his personal life. He could not understand how Melissa had come to be a huge part of his life and while it had been fun six years back, he could not say he was feeling the fun energy 'zap' anymore. Sometimes he asked himself if he had done the right thing or he had just allowed a huge mess becloud his sense of fair judgement. A lot had happened from six years back till date. And would he say he regretted them? Probably not. But he certainly was not liking where this was heading. He probably had to talk to Melissa and make her forget any thought of them together. He also needed to tell her to stop telling things to his mother. If there was anything to plan that involved him, he should be part of it. He would see to it. There was a knock on his office door. "Come in." The door opened to reveal Melissa. A frown deepened his forehead. What was she doing here? How had she been able to come here? Len sighed, realizing that was a stupid question he was asking. It was six years, more than half a decade. Melissa knew almost everything about him, and they — his mother and Melissa — thought it was normal for him to just go along with the flow. "Won't you welcome me in your office, my dear Len?" She walked up to him and trailed well manicured, red painted talons along his firm biceps hidden beneath his designer shirt that was rolled up to his elbow. "What are you doing here, Melissa?" He asked instead. "What? I can't come to see you anymore?" She frowned in annoyance. "I'm not saying that but you know this is my work hours, you should call me before coming." He quite frankly told her. Melissa was just too much for him. He could not say he did not understand what she wanted but why? He sighed inwardly. "Oh my goodness, Len. Just chill. I'm not here to bite you, you know." Melissa wanted him. Len was her childhood sweetheart and she never stopped loving him. Things had happened and Paula was no long part of the picture, but what was still stopping him? Why was he still behaving as though he did not want her? "I'm not saying you're here to bite me, Melissa. I'm just saying you should have let me know before coming here." He argued, sounding exasperated. This was one of the qualities he hated in Melissa. She was beautiful, well dressed and every of that but she was unnecessarily stubborn. So selfish and self-centered. Thinking of no one but herself. Maybe this was the problem. This was why he was having troubles with her. Why couldn't she be more like her sister? What? Who had his brain just racked up in the moment? No, he would not go there. "Okay fine! I'll let know you next time." She retorted, quite stung. Why was Len suddenly treating her like a stranger? Even after Paula left, things were still running smoothly between them. But this recent change was unexpected and annoying. "There. Was that so hard?" He observed her face then heaved a sigh. She was annoyed. He did not need any special person to tell him that. "It's okay, Melissa. I did not mean to be harsh on you." Without being invited, she sat on his lap and wound her arms around his neck. "I'm sorry too." He was struggling to hide his irritation. He forced his lips to spread in a smile. "That's okay. So what brings you here?" There was a quick rap on the door. He thought she would spring up from his lap and appear decent but she did not bulge. "Melissa, go seat on the chair opposite." He told her. It was still a struggle keeping his true emotions out of his voice. "Why?" Her brows furrowed as though she was not pleased with what he'd told her. The patient rap came on again. "Do you know this is an office, Melissa? I would not want any of my workers to see me in such position. What do you think it speaks of me?" He was certain he was beginning to lose the reins of control. "So? It should not be a bother, Len. We're together, aren't we?" What was his deal? Why was he acting up? Was something wrong in his life? But she would love to know and together they could sort it out. But the next words that came out of his mouth was unexpected. "We're not together. We never were and we will never be!"Chapter 25None of them anticipated that Paula Maillet would sue them all so quickly after she announced her intention to do so. How was it even possible to locate them?Despite the fact that most of her followers were haters, she had been enjoying some growth in popularity."Will she actually sue them?""Isn't she supposed to be begging for forgiveness? We don't even want her anymore for director David's movie. We want a new female lead."With a knowing smile on her lips, Veronica read out the comments. "These are enough for us to consider changing the female lead. Being a businesswoman, I detest losing. Although one loss is enough, it's better to prevent the root before it takes control.""Miss Veronica, we understand your concern but…" David tried to speak but was interrupted by Paula."There's no need to defend me, Mr. Alesso. I do not want my actions to cause the team to receive negative feedback. I'll step back as the female lead but not as the writer of this piece," Paula said,
The video played on the screen for the nth time. The man rewatched the video, scrutinizing it intently and narrowing his eyes as though he wished to not overlook any crucial information."Have you located the poster yet?" Len uttered, handing over the phone to Isak, who was sitting in the front seat. "Is it really someone we know, or is it Drake?"Len didn't trust that guy, especially since he declared his feelings for Paula and his desire to pursue her. Even though he and Paula were no longer together, it was strange to hear such remarks from the self-proclaimed playboy Drake."I'm sorry, but Mr. Bertram, why would Mr. Steel want to hurt the person he has feelings for? I'm not supporting him, but the perpetrator is someone who doesn't like Madam's arrival," Isak said, shaking his head. After all these years, he still remained oblivious to some things.Even though Paula isn't married to his boss anymore, Isak still referred to her as 'Madam.'"Who would not like her arrival? It's not
In the evening, Paula wore a hoodie to go grocery shopping. Her hair was in a messy bun, and she wore a face mask."Mom, why are you wearing a mask?" the little boy asked, his eyes on her. "We're just going to the grocery store, right?"Paula chuckled, pulling out a smaller mask from her bag. "You should wear one too. Mom's somewhat famous now. I don't want fans causing a scene if they see me."Winter nodded, taking the mask from her. "Then I'll wear it, Mom. It looks good on you, though."As they walked to the garage, Winter trailed behind his mother, his expression unusually serious. Once inside the car, Paula noticed her typically talkative child was unusually quiet."If there's anything on your mind, you can talk to me. Mommy's here to listen," she assured him. However, Winter simply looked away without saying a word.Winter was more mature and perceptive than boys his age. Every so often, he seemed older than his own mother."I would rather not stay here. I miss my friends and Mi
"He withdrew his investment? But filming will start next week?"The man had a worried look on his face as he rubbed his temples a few times. His eyes were glued to his phone, ever since he received the call from Mr. Bertram's assistant.David Alesso was a renowned director, and someone withdrawing their investment from his movie shouldn't have affected him, except the filming was scheduled to start next week."Why don't you try to contact Mr. Bertram for me? He should at least give a reason for such abrupt action," David told his assistant, reaching for his phone. "I'm going to talk to Paula first."As his assistant walked away, a woman entered, her heels clinking against the tiled floor."Miss Veronica, what brings you here?" David placed his phone down, unable to make a call due to his unexpected visitor."Mr. Alesso, we trusted you because you are one of the best, but frankly, I'm starting to think otherwise. Didn't you do a background check on your actors before casting them?" Ver
Seeing the annoyed face of her father, Paula let down a deep breath before standing up to her feet. She should have known that Melissa was up to no good. She knew, of course, but it would have been preferable if she had said no to their meeting."What do you think you are doing?" Gerald said, angrily infusing his words. "You disappeared without a word, and now, just as you did eight years ago, you are returning to get your sister's man."Trying to contain her rage, Paula let out a deep breath. "Mr. Astor, it appears that you are not understanding something. You should ask your daughter's man before accusing me! God!"However, Gerald wasn't having any of it. Paula, in his opinion, was a bad daughter. She was literally the child who brought shame to the entire family. He is never going to allow what happened eight years ago repeat itself.Melissa, his virtuous daughter, had given this unappreciative child more than her fair share of effort, but the child is still attempting to take her
Even though Paula really didn't want to go, Drake made sure to remind her every single day. Finally, it was Sunday evening. Paula dressed simply because she was meeting two people she was clearly not interested in.As per usual, Drake arrived for the pick-up thirty minutes early and acted like a gentleman.Drake still seemed happy to see Paula, even though they had already met this week for the script reading."You look amazing," He complimented, opening the door for her."Thank you," Paula replied, smiling and blushing.Who would not blush if a handsome and popular man like Drake opened the car door for them?As the car started, Drake was the first to break the silence in which Paula appreciated. Considering that they will be collaborating in the coming weeks, she wanted to speak with him. Stated differently, she wanted to build a comfortable relationship with her work partner."Is it really true that you were married? I sincerely looked for you after graduation" Drake said, without
