Elara’s Pov

For the very first time in my adult life, I had a real choice. I didn't have to calculate whether my decision would anger a demanding mother-in-law or disappoint a distant husband. The massive Rooke mansion had once been the place where I dreamed of building a happy family, but over the years, it had slowly turned into a cage where I was constantly judged and unwanted. On the other hand, the Veyne estate offered me an overwhelming amount of warmth, safety, and protection. Yet, despite how much I loved my parents and brothers, the enormous estate still felt a little too grand, a little too unfamiliar for a woman who was just learning how to breathe on her own.

I decided to talk it over with Ronan during our afternoon walk through the gardens.

"Ronan, I love being at the estate with everyone," I admitted softly, kicking a small pebble along the stone path. "But I don't know if I'm ready to live here permanently. It feels like stepping from one giant, golden cage into another."

Ronan smiled warmly, nodding in complete understanding. "You don't have to make a permanent choice today, Elara. Why don't you stay here for now while exploring the possibility of finding a smaller, more private home of your own?"

The idea hit me like a breath of fresh air. It was the perfect compromise. I wanted to enjoy my family's company without feeling like I had to depend on them for every single aspect of my daily life.

Later that evening, I sat down with Alaric and Seraphina in the living room to share my decision. I told them that I wanted to find a private residence where I could finish healing, build a quiet life, and eventually host my daughter, Lyra, when the opportunity finally arrived. I also explained that it would give me a peaceful space to learn about the Veyne businesses at my own comfortable pace.

Alaric’s face fell slightly, a flash of deep disappointment crossing his features at the thought of his newly-found daughter moving out so soon. But he caught himself almost immediately. He reached across the table, took my hand, and gave it a reassuring squeeze.

"I want you to be happy, Elara," Alaric said gently, his voice thick with care. "If keeping you close means giving you the freedom to choose where you belong, then that is what we will do."

The very next afternoon, the family helped me look through property listings. To everyone's surprise, I rejected several massive, multi-million-dollar mansions that looked more like royal palaces than actual homes. Instead, I fell in love with a comfortable, beautiful house nestled in a quiet neighborhood. It featured large, sunlit windows, a gorgeous private garden, and enough cozy space for me to entertain my family without feeling overwhelmed by an intimidating scale.

Ronan supported my choice immediately. "A home should serve the person living in it, Elara, not become another symbol of wealth that demands constant attention," he said proudly.

Of course, my brothers couldn't help getting involved in the details. Kael immediately insisted on reviewing the property's security blueprints to ensure every window and door was secure. Silas, meanwhile, pulled out a notepad and started making a chaotic list of practical things I would need—leading to a hilarious argument over whether I should be trusted to carry my own shopping bags or if Silas needed to hire a medical assistant just to supervise my grocery shopping.

I laughed, shaking my head at their overprotective antics, before holding up my hands. "Alright, stop! I appreciate your concern more than you know, but you have to trust me to make small decisions for myself."

The brothers finally backed down, though Kael successfully negotiated for a discreet, invisible security arrangement that would protect my privacy without making me feel constantly watched.

Seraphina smiled, stepping forward to wrap her arms around me. "Well, if we have a house, that means we need furniture. Let's go look at curtains, bookshelves, and find out what kind of flowers you want in your new garden."

For the next few hours, Seraphina and I walked through the empty rooms of the new house, talking happily about colors, soft rugs, and reading nooks. While exploring the second floor, I discovered a small, sunlit room that overlooked the back garden. It was quiet, peaceful, and secluded. I instantly imagined sitting there on a rainy morning with a cup of tea, reading a book without anyone rushing me or telling me I was doing something wrong.

For the very first time, I felt deep down in my bones that my future was finally being built around my own preferences rather than someone else's strict expectations.

As I stood near the open window, feeling the gentle breeze brush against my face, Seraphina stepped up quietly beside me. "Would you like the family to help you move in and settle down, Elara?" she asked softly.

I looked at her, feeling a warm swell of emotion in my chest. "Yes," I answered with a genuine smile. "I'd really like that."

It was a powerful realization. I finally understood that accepting help from people who loved me didn't mean surrendering my independence anymore.

Downstairs, Ronan received a quick update from the real estate agency confirming that the property paperwork had cleared and the house could be prepared for me much sooner than expected. Relieved, Ronan smiled and turned to share the good news with the security team stationed outside.

A few minutes later, Ronan walked back inside the house, but the relaxed, happy expression on his face was entirely gone. His eyes were narrowed, and his jaw was tight. He looked over at Kael, pointing a finger toward the front entrance.

"Hey, Kael," Ronan said, his voice dropping into a tense, cautious tone. "There's an unfamiliar luxury vehicle parked right near our security checkpoint. Can you have the team check who's inside?"

Kael didn't wait. He nodded sharply, turned on his heel, and walked briskly out the front doors to investigate. We all waited in the living room, the sudden shift in the air sending a cold shiver racing down my spine.

Only a few minutes passed before the front door clicked open again.

Kael stepped back inside the house, his tall frame radiating a fierce, protective tension. He walked straight toward me, his stormy eyes locking onto mine with a serious, unreadable expression.

“Elara.” His voice was low, controlled. “Someone connected to the Rooke family is at the gate. They’re asking to speak with you. Immediately.”

Elara’s Pov The words glowing on my phone screen—“Mommy, can I see you?”—sent a shockwave of raw emotion straight through my heart. I spent the entire night staring at that single sentence, drifting between nervous fear and overwhelming hope. Every time I closed my eyes, I pictured Lyra's sweet, tear-stained face, wondering if she was hurting just as much as I was. I knew I couldn't just rush into a reunion without a plan. After talking late into the night with our family counselor, I learned how important it was to handle this carefully. I couldn't let my little girl feel like she was responsible for fixing the broken pieces between her parents. We needed a quiet, safe, familiar environment where Lyra could leave at any moment if she felt overwhelmed. Ronan immediately stepped in to help arrange the details through a trusted intermediary, while Kael promised he would keep his security team far enough away so the meeting wouldn't feel like a scary police operation. Elara's Pov For days, my heart had been heavy with worry, constantly wondering how my eight-year-old daughter was handling my sudden disappearance. Every second of silence from that massive, cold Rooke mansion had felt like slow torture. Now, hearing that Lyra was struggling in class, that her quiet demeanor had turned into deep confusion, made my chest tighten with a painful, suffocating ache. "Mrs. Rooke, are you still there?" the administrator's voice gently asked through the line. I swallowed hard, forcing the lump in my throat down as I tried to steady my breathing. "Yes. I'm here. Please... tell me everything she said. What did Lyra ask?" "Well, her teacher noticed she has been very withdrawn all week," the administrator explained carefully. "Today, during art class, Lyra suddenly put her crayons down and asked a very heavy question. She wanted to know... whether a person can stop loving someone simply because they are angry with them." Those simple words hit me like a ph

Elara's Pov The news that someone connected to the Rooke family had just stepped onto my new property sent a cold shiver racing down my spine. My breath hitched in my throat, and my fingers instinctively gripped the edges of the wooden chair. Kael noticed the sudden panic in my eyes and stepped closer, his broad shoulders forming a protective wall between me and the front door. "Don't worry, Elara," Kael said firmly, his voice low and steady. "The visitor isn't coming inside. Nobody takes a single step forward unless you give the word. You are in complete control here." My chest tightened, a wave of anxiety crashing over me. My first thought was that Darian had finally tracked me down himself, or that he had sent someone to force me back into the cold halls of the Rooke mansion. I wasn't ready. I hadn't built up the emotional armor needed to face the man who had broken my heart. Before my racing heart could spiral out of control, Ronan walked back into the room, holding a thick,

Elara’s Pov The words glowing on my phone screen felt like they were burning straight through the glass. “Elara, I know you're alive. Please tell me where you are, because I need to see you before I lose you completely.” I read Darian's message over and over again, the letters blurring behind a sudden rush of hot tears. A familiar, aching pang of longing twisted inside my chest. That was the man I had loved for eight long years. That was the man who once made me feel safe in a cold world, before the silence and the business meetings took him away. But even as my heart ached to answer him, my mind flashed back to the most painful memory of all: the night he stood by the coffee machine and hesitated, choosing a surrogate arrangement with Mirelle while believing I only had six months left to live. Part of me desperately wanted to reply. I wanted to hear his voice. I wanted to look him in the eyes and see if he finally understood the deep, crushing damage his silence had caused. But

Elara’s Pov The news that the world was about to discover my past marriage hit me like a sudden wave of cold water. For weeks, I had tried so hard to separate my old life from this new, beautiful beginning with the Veynes. I wanted to heal, to learn who I was, and to enjoy the simple feeling of belonging somewhere safe. But I knew that once the media found out I was Darian Rooke’s missing wife, everything would change. The headlines wouldn't just be about a lost heiress anymore. People would start digging into the dark corners of my marriage. They would ask why I disappeared into the rainy night, whether Darian knew I was a Veyne all along, and whether my powerful family intended to crush the Rooke empire or help me walk away from it for good. I found Ronan in his study late that evening, holding the tablet with my hands shaking slightly. "Ronan, we have to do something," I said, my voice tight with worry. "If a reporter publishes a story about Darian and me, it's going to turn in
