Chapter 4

Author: Southwest
"I heard something moving under the bed and thought it was a rat, so I grabbed a shoe to whack it," I said.

Evanna thought for a moment. "We really do have rats at home. There's a trap under the bed. Guess you got lucky and didn't set it off."

I let out a breath. "Good thing my luck's not that bad."

She didn't respond. The room fell quiet again. After a long while, she said, "Damian, listen to me. I'm the only person in this house you can trust."

I had no idea why she said that, but I still nodded. "Of course. I only trust you."

No sooner had I said it than another thought hit me. "Wait. I can't even trust your parents?"

"Like I said, you can only trust me."

"Okay, okay. I'll remember that."

Dawn hadn't fully broken yet, and we drifted back off to sleep. Then a knock at the door jolted us both awake. We sat up at the same time.

Mrs. Zeller called from outside, "Evanna! Evanna, come out for a second."

Evanna answered, then leaned over and kissed me on the forehead before lifting the blanket and getting out of bed. "Go back to sleep for a bit. My mom probably wants me to help with breakfast."

As she left, she pulled the wooden door shut behind her.

I'd drunk way too much last night. My head was still spinning, so I lay there for a while longer. The old house had terrible soundproofing, so bits and pieces of Evanna's conversation with Mrs. Zeller drifted in.

"It has to be today, Evanna. We can't put it off anymore."

"Mom, give it a little more time, please. He's really good to me."

"This is his fate. At most, we wait until dinner."

Were they talking about me?

My head throbbed, but I still forced myself to climb out of bed. The second I opened the door, they both clammed up like they'd been caught.

My gut told me I really was the one they'd been talking about. Cold sweat beaded down my back in waves.

What did Mrs. Zeller mean by that last sentence? What did she mean, this was my fate? What exactly were they planning to do to me?

No matter how much I loved Evanna, I didn't want to stay here another second. So I said, "Let's head back today."

She looked torn. "Did something happen at home? Why are you in such a rush to leave? Besides, there's no one to take us down the mountain right now."

"How long will it take to walk to town? I really wanna go home."

Evanna's expression turned downright pissed. "What is wrong with you? You were the one dying to meet my parents, and now that you've seen how poor we are, you're the one in a hurry to leave. If you wanna go, then you're on your own. There's only one road down the mountain. Walk it."

I glanced outside. The sky was a dull sheet of gray, and the drizzle that had started in the morning was still coming down in a fine mist.

Who knew when I'd make it to town on my own two feet? And I'd just promised Evanna I would trust her.

"Evanna, I'm sorry. I just… I just got a little spooked," I said.

"Spooked by what? Those rats from last night?"

"No. Your conversation with your mom this morning really freaked me out."

Evanna shot to her feet. "You must've been half-asleep. Mom and I went out to the vegetable patch at dawn and only just got back. Or are you telling me you suddenly gained super-hearing and could listen in on us from a mile away?"

After telling me everything, Evanna grabbed my hand and dragged me toward the settlement. "Damian, promise me you'll stay with me forever. Please?"My heart softened when I saw her tear-streaked face. "Evanna, as long as I can stay with you, it doesn't matter if I can't reincarnate. You should've just explained everything to me earlier. I wouldn't have run off.""I saw how happy you were. I couldn't bring myself to tell you the truth." She cupped my face in her hands and finally managed a satisfied smile. The only problem was that the woods behind the settlement were too dense. We walked and walked, but we still couldn't make it back.Evanna was the first to sense something was wrong. "Crap. We're trapped in a ghost loop."I was confused. "I'm literally a ghost right now. Who could trap me?""Strictly speaking, you're not. Your body's still lying in the hospital. Only when I attach your soul to the doll will that body die. Then you'll really be a ghost. Right now, you're a living

  • Soul Kept From the Grave   Chapter 8

Everything really started about a week before the holidays. That day, I told Evanna I wanted to meet her parents. She shot me down again, and we fought. In a fit of anger, I stormed out alone in the middle of the night. There were a few drunk kids on the street, tearing around on motorcycles. One of them suddenly swerved up onto the sidewalk and sent me flying.I was rushed to the hospital, and the doctors said I was in a vegetative state. My body lay on the hospital bed, but my soul was still wandering around the crash site. Because it all happened so suddenly, I had no memory of the accident itself. So for the next few days, I just drifted around like a restless spirit, going through my usual routine.Looking back, everything made sense now. No wonder no one at work had talked to me, and the bus had blown past me even though I'd waved at the driver. No wonder Evanna had only called for one motorcycle to take us back to the settlement. I'd sat at the very back, constantly feelin

"We meet again, young man," the old woman said.I was on the verge of tears. "Ma'am, please, you have to help me. Please, I'm begging you!"I could hear Evanna's parents shouting behind us, their voices getting closer and closer. Suddenly, the old woman lifted her hand and waved it.I squeezed my eyes shut in fright. When I opened them again, I was already inside a mountain cave. A few basic necessities were scattered around. From the looks of it, the old woman had been living here for a long time.I was still badly shaken and just stood there, frozen and at a loss. The old woman sat cross-legged on her bed, her eyes shut as she said, "Young man, you're gonna see a light in front of you in a bit. Just keep following it, and you'll be able to go home."All of a sudden, my world went dark. A hazy ring of light appeared in front of me. I followed it, but all around me I started hearing this mess of noisy, miserable cries. Then, through the chaos, I heard Evanna calling my name. Her

When I woke up with a splitting headache, I realized I was locked in the same room as the night before. I pounded on the door and shouted at the top of my lungs, but no one came.Eventually, I slid down, my back against the door, and sat on the floor. I'd trusted Evanna so much. Why would she do this to me?That was when I remembered the voice from my dream last night. A ghost who claimed to be Evanna's ex-boyfriend had said he was hidden under the bed.I went over, got down on my stomach, turned on my phone's flashlight, and crawled underneath. Sure enough, I found a hidden latch with an old iron padlock. Strange symbols were carved into the metal.I grabbed the lock and yanked hard. It was aged, but still solid. I couldn't get it open.I glanced at my phone, hesitated for a second, then raised it and slammed it down on the lock. It became dented, but the flashlight stayed on. After a few more blows, the lock was still intact, but the latch had finally broken.I hurried to pull

I was completely thrown off by Evanna's response and just stood there stammering, unable to get a single word out. All I could do was bite the bullet, say a few nice things to placate her, then throw myself into helping around the house. In the end, I managed to coax her back into a good mood. The rain stopped after breakfast, and a thick fog settled over the mountains, clinging stubbornly to everything.I honestly couldn't sit still at home. When Evanna saw how restless I was, she suggested taking me out for a walk. We'd barely stepped out the door when we got lost. Evanna was a local, but she hadn't been back in ages. No matter where we went, we couldn't find the way we'd come. She tried to reassure me. "Relax, the settlement isn't that big. We'll find our way back."Unease washed over me in waves, but for the sake of my so-called manly pride, I forced myself not to show it.We held hands and wandered along the narrow paths swallowed by mist. If it weren't for the dolls set up
