“Don’t look into their eyes,” John said, pulling Tania’s hand as they walked on the quiet street. 

It was her seventh birthday when her father took her to a small bookstore. She wanted to buy a new sketchbook. 

“But Papa,” she tugged at his hand, “the old lady was hurting.”

John smiled softly, lifting the little girl into his embrace as he continued walking.
