Chapter 2

He was late, yes he knew it but he didn't care, if they wanted to do business with him, they should be ready to wait as long as he wanted them to wait.

He walked into study and his eyes raked the whole room, it didn't look as expensive as he expected. cheap couch, poor design choice.

There were two men standing in the room, one looked older, the one he'd been talking to for the past one month.

His sharp gaze moved from the old man to the other man much younger man in the room, obviously the young one seemed to be scrutinizing him with his eyes too, he had neatly shaved hair and a clean shaved face, he looked quite too young and kind of innocent.

With very intriguing brown eyes, not the regular bright but dark, dull and lost brown eyes.

Like sand in the desert, stormy and clouded

Both their eyes finally met and the younger of the two sucked in a breath, Spade's eyes was sharp and his gaze was scrutinizing and fearless, very sharp the edge of a samurai's blade, cutting through his skin making Nathan swallow hard.

He wanted to recoil back and hide from his gaze but he couldn't, he had to put up a brave front and act like a man

Greg smiled nervously and moved forward stretching his hands out to the renowned and most feared man in the city.

"Welcome Spade" he muttered, Spade just gave his hand a long hard disgusted look before he looked back up at him.

"It's Mr DeVille to you" he muttered lowly before walking past the old man and sitting on the couch without an invitation

"Sure" Greg muttered scrunching his nose up before turning around and facing the man perched on his couch.

"This is my son Nathan" he said excitedly pointing at the young man close to his desk

Spade's eyes cut to the young man and looked at him, his eyes raking him from up to down, he could see the fear in his eyes and the uncertainty.

He looked away and back at the old man.

Greg quickly walked towards his small in bar in his office and pulled out a scotch and three glasses before walking back to the table and filling them with scotch.

He handed one of the half filled cup to Spade, it took a while before Spade stretched out his hand and took the cup of scotch from him, instead of drinking it he just looked into the cup as he twirled the liquid inside.

He looked up again and his eyes involuntarily moved to the young man, he didn't drink the scotch either, instead he dropped the cup on the table and looked back at Spade, more like looked around Spade.

He noticed the young man was avoiding his gaze, looking around and above him but not directly at him.

He was used to this, people being afraid of him, but the thought of this strange young man being afraid of him, stirred him in a way he couldn't quite understand

"Let's get down to business Mr Miller, I don't have all day" he muttered and Greg just chuckled nervously

"Ah yes" he whispered before walking around the desk and opening one of the cupboard, he pulled out a file and handed it over to Spade.

Nathan was just watching their exchange not understanding a thing that was going on

Spade opened the file and the first page had a picture, a picture of the young lady he met downstairs, the redhead.

He went through the file while trying to know why exactly this man was willing to give his daughter away just like that.

She went to a very expensive and private school, graduated first class in business.

Very nice.

But had zero internet presence, unlike most spoilt rich girls he'd met over the course of time.

Surely this wasn't the first time someone would offer marriage to him, in exchange for something.

After a while he got up and closed the file before dropping it on the desk with a loud thud, the young man was still watching him, but he noticed how he flinched slightly at the sound of the file hitting the desk.

It would be hard to notice but the fact that Spade had been watching him with keen interest since, he noticed it.

"Why"? He asked and Greg looked at him with surprise then confusion

"Uh... I already told you Sp.... Sorry Mr DeVille, it's a good business deal and you have nothing to lose if you take it" he muttered obviously scared of the monster standing in front of him.

He made a face and nodded his head slowly his eyes trailing over to the young man who hadn't said anything since he walked into the office

"And what makes you think your daughter would agree to this"? He asked and Greg just chuckled

"Of course she will, she's not going to be a problem, infact we can call her now and get this over with" he muttered before picking up the landline and calling on his cook to get his daughter upstairs.

While they waited, Spade couldn't help but really look at the young man who looked very clueless to what was happening.

This was the person he'd be working with in the coming months, this weak, almost half witted young and scared man or should he say boy.

Someone who could barely meet his gaze, how was he supposed to work with him.

He looked at his, like really studied his facial features, he had dark almost brown hair, but it was dark, to dark to be considered brown, more like dusty black.

His face was neatly shaved, making him look a bit childlike, and his skin was pale and sickly, that may be the result of the 'Spade effect' as he likes to call it.

The effect of fear he has on people he comes across. And his lips, very small and almost invincible, a bit darker than the rest of his skin.

He didn't look anything older than 25 or less, but yet he was running his father's businesses and he was running it good but yet his father still found a way to be neck in deep in debt, not just any kind of debt, debt with the devil himself.

Spade was still watching Nathan when the young man's eyes involuntarily landed on him, and he could see the fear, shock and surprise in those brown eyes before he quickly looked away.

What a pussy, he can't even maintain eye contact, not that most people could with Spade, but he expected more from a CEO that was this good in the business world.

"Why is he here"? His voice boomed in the room making the young man look at him briefly.

Greg let out a deep breath "uhm... Like I said he's my son and also the CEO of my company, he runs all the business so he has to be here for the signing, as a witness of course" he rushed out

"Signing of what"? His voice cut through the tension and it was nothing like Spade expected, not that he had high expectations but it sounded way different that he imagined.

He expected the voice to be Neel, nothing more of a whisper, matching his whole appears but he was wrong, and Spade is hardly ever wrong about anything.

Instead his voice, was soft, gentle, not hard and not meek either.

Loud enough to be heard, but low enough to be gentle and soft, like music.

Since entering the room, this will be the first time he'd be saying a word and his voice grabbed the attention of Spade in a way he didn't expect.

He just kept staring at the young man

"You'll see" Greg muttered grimacing at the young man before he took the drink and took a huge swig of it.

He looked at his watch and this was taking too long, where is she.

He was about to ask when the doors opened and she walked in.

He was right, it was the girl he saw when he just walked into the house.

The one with the apron, she still had the apron on

Her eyes darted between her father and her brother before they landed on Spade, he just watched her and his gaze definitely made her uncomfortable, he thrived on that.

"You called me Dad" she whispered, her voice coming out soft and gentle

"Yes Suzy I did, You know Mr DeVille, I'm sure you've heard about him around the house once or twice" Greg muttered and his daughter nodded, her eyes darting to Spade.

"Well, Spade is here to ask for your hand in marriage" he muttered making his daughter and son turn to look at him at the same time

"What"?

"What"?

They both spat out simultaneously making their father sigh out

"Well actually, it's a contract marriage kind of thing" he muttered

Spade just looked at the young man, he looked pretty shocked at the revelation his father just dropped, which meant this came as a surprise to him, so much for being the CEO.

Naturally Spade was supposed to be more invested in what the girl he was supposed to be married to had to say, but he couldn't care less if she was interested or not.

Instead his attention was on the other sibling, for some reason he wanted to know what the young man would say, what his reaction is.

"Dad what do you mean he's asking for her hand in marriage"? Nathan asked facing his father, while Spade watched him with keen interest, wondering what he would do next

"It means that she will be getting married to him, very soon" he answered not even slightly bothered by his son's facial expressions, which read disapproval.

"So what's it going to be Mr Miller? Do we have a deal or not"? Spade asked shoving his hands into his pants pocket and facing the old man.

"Yes"

"No"

Two voices at the same time, but Spade was only interested in the later, the one that screamed no

He wanted to know why Nathan as his dad called him, was refusing the offer, not that he had any choice, but he didn't know that

His eyes moved and landed on Nathan, making the young man swallow hard and try to look away from the emotionless eyes of Spade, no one had ever said no to Spade, not since he took the reigns of power from his father

Nathan quickly regretted his choice of words as he could feel two very scary gazes on him.

One from his father and one from the devil in their midst, he knew of Spade's reputation, and how ruthless he was.

He's heard stories about it and maybe even researched it once or twice, so he knew he had already crossed a line by his sudden outburst.

But for some reason he wasn't scared, not of this man's gaze, but of his father's.

The man had always taught him to never speak out of turn, not unless spoken to.

He knew how many times he had taken a punch to the face and gut because he spoke out of turn.

"I'm guessing you have discussed this with them, not that I care, but I'll give you 48 hours to make up your mind, if in 48 hours I come back here and you haven't decided yet, you know what will happen Miller" Spade said his gaze lingering on Nathan longer before he turned around and walked out of the office.

Nathan literally felt the air get lighter in the study, like he could breathe again, there was something about Spade that made him uneasy and super alert.

Of course the man was very dangerous and not to be messed with.

Just how did their father end up doing business with someone like that.

He knows of his father's numerous business partners being dangerous people but none can match up to Spade, if he is just as bad as they say he is.

Spade walked out of the house and got into his car before driving off.

He knew Greg had no choice, he didn't care how he'd do it but he will make his daughter sign the contract.

Personally he didn't care if the girl wanted to or not, the marriage meant nothing to him, but the company he was about to get, well part of it, meant a lot.

He would gain more grounds here in New York.

This will be the first time Greg would be meeting Spade, he had never seen him prior to this meeting, but yet he had already agreed for his daughter to marry him.

What if he was some sleezy old man, Greg would still have just sold his daughter away like that to save his own ass.

And clearly his son also didn't know about the deal, which mean he doesn't know of the huge debt his father was in.

His son.

The young pale skinned man in the room.

He piqued Spade's interest and he couldn't figure out why.

There was something in his eyes that drew Spade in, made Spade more curious about him.

There was this fear, uncertainty and something else, something strong he couldn't quite figure out yet.
