Chapter 1

작가: Sweet Tomato
The butler who had arrived with the groom's party started pacing frantically when he realized that the bride had been swapped.

"This is madness! Ms. Mayer, you've been engaged to Mr. Reeve for over a decade. Are you just going to stand by and watch him marry a widow who guts fish for a living?"

I looked toward Tracie Mayer, my so-called fiancee, who was clinging to Everett Huffman's arm. The two of them wore matching couple outfits as they stood among the wedding party.

At the mention of our engagement, she frowned and coolly said, "Everyone knows that engagement was just a silly joke as kids. If he thinks he can tie me down with that, think again."

Though our engagement was approved by both families and known throughout Crisea, she denied it without a hint of shame. Whatever promises that once existed were now nothing more than a joke.

Everett casually raised his hand to show off the matching ring he shared with Tracie. "Everyone's waiting for the wedding to start, so don't waste time. Hurry up and take the bride away."

My older sister, Adeline Reeve, chimed in and teasingly urged, "We're doing this just to give Everett a laugh and let him blow off some steam.

"You don't have to go through with the actual wedding, Aston. Just suck it up and get it over with."

I dug my fingernails into my palms as my heart throbbed painfully.

In the room, I looked around the crowd of mocking faces and perfectly understood that this was a scene specially staged by Adeline and Tracie, all to make me the laughingstock of Crisea and please Everett.

They were certain I would flee like a coward, but I wasn't going to let them have it their way.

I walked up, knelt on one knee before the bride, and pulled out a ring. "Will you marry me?"

For a moment, dead silence fell over the room before Adeline's rage and Tracie's panic followed.

Adeline rushed forward and yanked me up. "Have you lost your mind, Aston? Are you serious about marrying a widowed fishmonger?

"I told you—it's just for show!"

Tracie grabbed her arm and coldly looked at me. "Let him do it.

"Can't you tell? This is reverse psychology, and he's trying to make us think he'll actually marry her. He's pulled this stunt more than once."

It was true. Ever since I was discharged from the hospital and realized that both Adeline and Tracie favored Everett, I had tried everything.

Once, I worked through the night until I collapsed, hoping they would visit me in the hospital, but they never did.

They were already at the hospital's entrance when one phone call from Everett made them turn around and leave. In their eyes, I had turned into a schemer who desperately sought attention.

But today, I wasn't throwing a tantrum. I was done and utterly exhausted with trying to win back the hearts of two people who didn't love me.

"Is he for real? I'm not staying for a widowed fishmonger's wedding; that's just too low-class for me!"

"I'm looking forward to Everett and Tracie's wedding instead. Now that's a perfect match made in heaven."

Ignoring the mocking laughter from Everett's best buddies, I kept my eyes locked on the woman in front of me.

I watched as she parted her lips slightly and extended her slender right hand. When she spoke, her voice carried an extraordinary air of nobility.

"Sure. I'll marry you."

In the wedding car, the woman told the driver to stop. "Turn around and head straight to the city hall."

It took me a moment to register her words before I turned to look at her nervously. "Are you sure you want to marry me? Don't you have any questions to ask?"

She let out a light laugh and raised an eyebrow. "You didn't ask questions before you proposed, did you?"

Smiling, she led me through the marriage registration process. When we finally stepped out of the city hall with a marriage certificate, she turned to me.

"There's something else I have to take care of. We'll hold the wedding three days from now, and I'll handle the arrangements."

  • Spent My Love, Cleared the Score   Chapter 9

A week later, Tracie showed up at my door, dragging Everett along to apologize. He was deathly pale, barely conscious, and looked like he was clinging to his last breath. Her men forced him to his knees, and her eyes were swollen from crying. "I'm sorry, Aston. I've looked into everything, so now, I know that he's been the mastermind behind everything."All these years, he's been exploiting our sympathy and trying to take your place in our hearts. I gave him what he wanted and made him donate all the blood he never gave, so are you satisfied now?"From the balcony, I could see the needle marks covering Everett's arms and couldn't help but lament how frightening Tracie's ruthlessness was. But now, a delayed apology meant nothing to me.As I looked at the scene, all I was concerned about was whether the noise outside the gates would disturb Jayne and affect her pregnancy. When I returned to the bedroom and saw her sleeping soundly, I finally felt at ease. After tucking her in, I t

Tracie had always been sharp and brilliant, but now, she couldn't bring herself to accept the truth."Impossible! Everett would never do something like that! "Aston, did you collude with the nurse to lie to us?"Tracie and Adeline turned to me at the same time with suspicion written all over their faces.Over the past year, I had lost count of how many times they had given me the same look. Every single time, I would explain myself, but today, I felt nothing at all and calmly said, "Do you think you're worth that much effort? I stopped caring about what you both think a long time ago."When Tracie heard the words "stopped caring", she looked as if she had been struck by a blow. Tears spilled like beads from a broken necklace as she cried out, "You're not allowed to say that!"I'll have my men investigate everything right now. If it really isn't your fault… I'll have Everett apologize to you in person."Wait for me, Aston. I'll give you an answer."Adeline's eyes were bloodshot

My voice carried across the room and began drawing attention. Tracie felt her dignity crumble under the odd stares. She eyed Edmund and roared, "I know exactly why you're here! "You want to land a partnership with Mr. Welch, but I won't let you have it your way. No one will help you except for me, Aston."She confidently turned to Edmund. "I'm willing to give up three percentage points on this project, as long as you work with my company."Then, she raised an eyebrow at me and added, "If you don't divorce her today, the deal's mine."Jayne let out a soft laugh of pure disdain. "Have you forgotten who is standing next to him? Who do you think is the better partner here, Mr. Welch?"Without a second thought, Edmund extended his hand to me with a beaming smile. "My apologies, Ms. Mayer, but I find Mr. Reeve's new company to be far more innovative and promising."After shaking Edmund's hand, I smiled and watched as Tracie's face turned a sickly shade of gray. "Sorry, Tracie, but m

I leaned in and kissed Jayne on the lips. "Thank you, honey."The kiss lasted a long time.…Jayne got me an assistant, handled the HR, and took care of nearly every operational detail of the company. She told me clients were crucial for a new company and offered to introduce me to contacts.I laid out several carefully selected client profiles and asked, "I've finalized the foreign projects, but I'm still vetting clients. Which of these looks best to you?"She took over the materials and pointed to a company owned by a man named Edmund Welch. "Mr. Welch. His subsidiaries are all over Atheria, and he has a dedicated user base for his products. But I can't guarantee that you can close the deal."Say… Dad's attending a business gala the day after tomorrow. I'll get us invitations and bring you there."…When Jayne and I made a grand entrance at the business gala, we drew waves of greetings. I scanned the room and spotted Edmund. But just as I was about to approach, I noticed Tr

I shot Tracie and Adeline a cold look. All my prior submissiveness had vanished. "Listen carefully, Tracie. Our engagement ended the moment you swapped the bride, and from now on, you and I have nothing to do with each other."As for you, Adeline, go ahead if you want to be Everett's sister. We will no longer stay in touch either."With that, I told the bodyguards at the door to drive them out.Tracie and Adeline never left. They stubbornly stayed outside the villa, waited for me to come out and give them an explanation. But I couldn't be bothered.Jayne and I got married, and the wedding was just a simple ceremony. She wanted a destination wedding, so we held a small gathering at home and invited close friends and family to a meal.Adeline was my only remaining family, but since she had long chosen Everett over me, I didn't let her in. So, there were no family members on my side. The Coopers never probed. Instead, they smiled throughout the meal and asked where Jayne and I pla

  • Spent My Love, Cleared the Score   Chapter 4

I never expected Jayne to arrive in a fleet of Rolls-Royces. The lead car bore a striking license plate, A8888.Wasn't that car supposed to belong to Lincoln Cooper, the wealthiest man in Crisea? When Lincoln himself stepped out of the car and placed Jayne's hand in mine, I was completely stunned. The woman I had married on a whim when everything had gone wrong turned out to be the daughter of Crisea's wealthiest man!Seeing the stunned look on my face, Jayne couldn't help but laugh. "Surprised? I gave you hints, but you never asked who I was."I nervously swallowed hard and stumbled over my words. "B-But weren't you supposed to run a fish stall? How did you suddenly become Mr. Cooper's daughter?"She chuckled softly before explaining, "That was just a persona I made up to avoid the blind dates my dad set me up for. No one would dare marry me if they believed I was a widowed fishmonger."But you were different. Even when you believed I was a fishmonger, you never showed the sligh
