Chapter 6

Author: Jojo
Back at home, Riley began methodically sorting through the paperwork for their assets. She laid out the supplementary credit card Yale had given her, the jewelry, and the property deeds, arranging everything on the table as though she were settling the accounts of some absurd dream.

Three days later, Yale Sullivan was discharged from the hospital.

He appeared in the doorway wearing an immaculate suit, his tie perfectly knotted. Nothing about his appearance suggested he'd suffered a near-fatal injury just days earlier.

"Baby, work's been so hectic lately. I haven't had any time for you."

He approached her, intending to pull her into his arms. The faint smell of antiseptic still clung to him.

Yale had kept his injury and hospitalization a secret. Riley knew he was afraid she'd become suspicious and he wouldn't know how to explain himself. That was why he'd rushed to get discharged.

What he didn't know was that she'd witnessed everything. She'd seen with her own eyes just how willing he was to risk his life for another woman.

"How's our little one doing?" Yale suddenly asked, his gaze settling on her stomach. "Have you been taking your medicine? Your belly actually looks a little smaller."

As he reached out to touch her, Riley instinctively stepped back.

"I'm not feeling well. Don't touch me." Her voice was cold.

Yale frowned deeply and immediately summoned the housekeepers to ask how she'd been doing lately. When he learned she hadn't been taking her pregnancy medicine, his expression changed. He went straight to the kitchen to prepare it himself.

"Come on, baby. Be good." His voice was impossibly gentle as he held out the bowl. "You need to take your medicine for your own health. It'll make things easier for you when it's time to give birth."

Riley stared at the dark brown liquid, trying to think of an excuse to refuse it, when the doorbell rang.

Several of Yale's closest friends had arrived, all looking agitated. After telling Riley to get some rest, he ushered them into his study.

The moment their footsteps faded, Riley poured the medicine down the sink and rinsed it away.

She was heading back to the bedroom when the sound of an increasingly heated discussion reached her from the study.

"Yale, Selise's family is trying to force her into an arranged marriage. She refused, so her parents have locked her in the house. They're planning to hold the wedding the day after tomorrow and make it a done deal."

A sharp crash followed, sounding like a teacup shattering.

After what felt like an eternity, Yale finally spoke, his voice cold and controlled.

"I understand."

"What do you mean, you understand?" another friend demanded.

"I mean," Yale replied, enunciating every word, "I'm not letting her marry someone she doesn't love."

The study erupted in protest.

"Wait, you're planning to break up the wedding?"

"Yale, think about what you're doing! You're a married man, and your baby's due in just a few months!"

"Have you even considered what people will say about Riley if you pull something like that?"

"And what about your child? How's your kid supposed to deal with the fallout?"

"Aren't you afraid Riley will divorce you?"

Despite the chorus of objections, Yale's firm response silenced them all.

"I'll handle it. Riles won't hear about any of this."

"And what if she finds out?"

Several seconds passed before Yale answered.

"So what if she does? I'll just have to sweet-talk her a little. She's so crazy about me that she can't bear to be without me."

Outside the study, Riley stood frozen, her face drained of color.

Her fingers drifted unconsciously to her chest. There was still a dull ache in her heart, but the unbearable, gut-wrenching pain she'd once felt was gone.

It was then that she realized she was slowly letting go of him.

She really didn't love him anymore.

Riley helped him to his feet, and amid the cheers and congratulations, he leaned closer and whispered, "Can I kiss you?"She nodded again.A short distance away, Yale stood hidden behind a tree, watching them.He hesitated for a while before finally approaching them once the crowd had dispersed. The moment Yancy spotted him, he became wary and instinctively moved in front of Riley."What are you doing here?"Yale showed no reaction to his hostile tone. Without saying anything, he simply held out a box to Riley. When she made no move to accept it, he opened the lid, revealing a key."I've set aside some assets for you at the bank. They're part of what you were entitled to in the divorce."Riley looked at th

"Selise Lane, you have a visitor."After several days in the detention center, Selise had lost a frightening amount of weight. Her face and body were covered in bruises. She got up numbly and followed the guard to the visitation area. The moment she saw Yale, however, she recoiled in terror and grabbed the guard's arm."Please! I don't want to see him! Please take me back!"The guard shook her off and turned to Yale."Since you've signed the paperwork requesting leniency, I'll process her release. You can take her home."Yale nodded.Hearing this, Selise immediately assumed he'd finally come to his senses. She rushed forward and clutched his clothes."Yale! I knew you'd come to save me! Please, get me out of here. I can't stand another day in this place!"Selise had grown up spoiled and pampered, never having experienced anything remotely like this. She'd struggled to adjust to life in detention, and both the guards and her cellmates had taken turns beating her, leaving her battered an

The hospital room fell silent as the door closed behind Riley.Yale remained motionless on the bed, staring at the chair she'd been sitting in. A long time passed before he finally whispered, "I'm sorry."He slipped off his wedding ring, the one he'd worn since the day he married Riley, and broke down in tears. It was all his fault.Selise had been right. Yancy had been right. And Riley had certainly done nothing wrong.Everything that had happened to their marriage was the result of his own actions. He had no one to blame but himself.Once his injuries had healed, Yale returned to Jovington. He sat alone in the house he'd once shared with Riley, his chest aching as he took in the empty rooms. Almost everything was gone, yet every corner still held memories of their life together.Eventually, he went upstairs to the nursery. He and Riley had chosen everything in that room together, carefully picking out each item as they waited for their baby to arrive."Yale, do you think we're having

When Yancy arrived at the Nolan house, Riley was sitting on the couch watching TV."You're back?" she greeted him.Daniel looked up as well. "Yancy, you're back?"Yancy handed Riley a box of cakes."Yeah. I passed that bakery you've been wanting to try, so I picked some up for you."Riley hesitated before asking, "How is he?"Yancy paused. "He's doing okay, but he keeps saying he wants to see you."Daniel gave an indignant snort."What nerve does he have asking to see Riles? Saving her was the least he could do!"His reaction made both Riley and Yancy laugh.Yancy couldn't deny that he was worried. After all, Yale had taken a knife for Riley. What if that sacrifice rekindled her old feelings for him?Still, he respected her right to make her own decisions."Do you want to go see him?"Riley hesitated before finally nodding.A flicker of sadness crossed Yancy's eyes, so faint it was almost imperceptible.Daniel, meanwhile, assumed his daughter still hadn't gotten over Yale."You're stil

The knife in Selise's hand caught the light, its reflection flashing before Riley's terrified eyes."Die, Riley Nolan!"As Selise lunged at her, both Yancy and Yale rushed forward to protect her. Yancy pulled Riley into his arms while Yale threw himself in front of them, taking the knife meant for her.Riley was so stunned that even with Yancy holding her, she couldn't seem to process what had just happened. Everyone in the restaurant stood frozen in shock. When Selise realized her attack had failed, she tried to pull the knife free and strike again, but a security guard rushed over and kicked her aside."Call an ambulance!""Someone's been stabbed!"Chaos erupted throughout the restaurant as the staff scrambled to call for emergency assistance."Riles, are you okay?" Yancy asked anxiously, looking down at Riley in his arms. She finally came to her senses and immediately began checking him for injuries."I'm fine, Riles." Yancy held her close, gently reassuring her.Meanwhile, Selise s

While keeping Selise locked away, he also launched a relentless campaign against her family's business.Lane Group had already been struggling with serious cash flow problems brought on by difficulties in its industry. The only reason the company had managed to stay afloat was that Selise and her father had secured Sullivan Group's support.
