Chapter 7

Author: Jojo
Over the next few days, Yale was unusually busy. Riley watched him leave early and come home late, his phone never leaving his side and the light in his study often burning well past midnight.

She knew exactly what he was doing. He was carefully planning his grand gesture of crashing Selise's wedding.

On the morning their mandatory divorce waiting period ended, Riley left the house early to collect her finalized divorce certificate from her lawyer. The division of their assets had already been settled, and apart from that, she was taking only her personal belongings.

When she returned home, Yale was standing in front of the full-length mirror, adjusting his tie. He wore a brand-new navy suit, its cuff links gleaming coldly in the morning light. Riley had never seen him wear it before. He must have bought it especially for today.

"Back from your walk?" He caught her reflection in the mirror and smiled warmly. "Baby, I've got something to take care of today. Stay home and get some rest, okay? And don't forget to take your medicine."

Turning toward her, he gently stroked her stomach with his long fingers.

"You behave yourself today," he murmured to the baby. "Don't give Mommy any trouble. If you make her feel sick, Daddy's going to be upset."

Riley looked at the tenderness in his eyes and almost laughed at the irony.

He would walk through fire for Selise, yet he didn't even know his own child was gone.

Clutching the divorce papers in her hand, she said, "There's something I need to tell you."

Yale paused. "Baby, I'm just about to leave."

"Are you really in that much of a hurry?" she asked softly. "You can't spare me five minutes?"

He glanced at his watch but still shook his head. "Can we talk tonight instead?"

"Is it really that important?"

"Yes," he answered without hesitation, his eyes filled with an almost obsessive determination. "More important than my life."

A faint smile touched Riley's lips, fleeting as the last snowflake of winter.

"Then go," she said quietly. "Don't let me hold you up."

Yale looked as though he wanted to say something, but in the end, he merely kissed her forehead before hurrying out.

Once the sound of his car had faded into the distance, Riley went into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator that no one had thought to check.

Cold air washed over her as she retrieved the gift box that had been sitting there untouched for days. She carried it into the living room and gently placed it on the coffee table.

Inside, the five-month-old fetus lay curled in formalin, almost as though it were sleeping.

Riley closed her eyes for a moment before placing her newly issued divorce certificate beside the box.

Then she picked up her suitcase and walked out the front door without looking back.

The airport terminal was bustling with travelers. Her flight was about to take off, and she was just reaching to turn off her phone when a message from Yale appeared.

[Baby, I left your medicine warming in the kitchen. I'll be home to keep you company as soon as I'm done.]

"Yale Sullivan, for the rest of my life, you'll never be the one keeping me company.

"I've kicked you out of my world for good," Riley thought to herself.

Without a trace of hesitation, she deleted his message. Then she erased every photo of them together from her phone before finally deleting all his contact information.

As the plane lifted into the sky, she could almost hear something click inside her, as though she'd pressed Delete on one last thing.

Every last bit of love she'd ever felt for him.

"Riley Nolan, will you marry me?"Yancy was down on one knee, holding out a ring as he looked up at Riley.Surrounded by Daniel and their friends, Riley gazed into Yancy's eyes, so full of love for her, and slowly nodded.Delighted, Yancy immediately slipped the ring onto her finger. Riley helped him to his feet, and amid the cheers and congratulations, he leaned closer and whispered, "Can I kiss you?"She nodded again.A short distance away, Yale stood hidden behind a tree, watching them.He hesitated for a while before finally approaching them once the crowd had dispersed. The moment Yancy spotted him, he became wary and instinctively moved in front of Riley."What are you doing here?"Yale showed no reaction to his hostile tone. Without saying anything, he simply held out a box to Riley. When she made no move to accept it, he opened the lid, revealing a key."I've set aside some assets for you at the bank. They're part of what you were entitled to in the divorce."Riley looked at th

"Selise Lane, you have a visitor."After several days in the detention center, Selise had lost a frightening amount of weight. Her face and body were covered in bruises. She got up numbly and followed the guard to the visitation area. The moment she saw Yale, however, she recoiled in terror and grabbed the guard's arm."Please! I don't want to see him! Please take me back!"The guard shook her off and turned to Yale."Since you've signed the paperwork requesting leniency, I'll process her release. You can take her home."Yale nodded.Hearing this, Selise immediately assumed he'd finally come to his senses. She rushed forward and clutched his clothes."Yale! I knew you'd come to save me! Please, get me out of here. I can't stand another day in this place!"Selise had grown up spoiled and pampered, never having experienced anything remotely like this. She'd struggled to adjust to life in detention, and both the guards and her cellmates had taken turns beating her, leaving her battered an

The hospital room fell silent as the door closed behind Riley.Yale remained motionless on the bed, staring at the chair she'd been sitting in. A long time passed before he finally whispered, "I'm sorry."He slipped off his wedding ring, the one he'd worn since the day he married Riley, and broke down in tears. It was all his fault.Selise had been right. Yancy had been right. And Riley had certainly done nothing wrong.Everything that had happened to their marriage was the result of his own actions. He had no one to blame but himself.Once his injuries had healed, Yale returned to Jovington. He sat alone in the house he'd once shared with Riley, his chest aching as he took in the empty rooms. Almost everything was gone, yet every corner still held memories of their life together.Eventually, he went upstairs to the nursery. He and Riley had chosen everything in that room together, carefully picking out each item as they waited for their baby to arrive."Yale, do you think we're having

When Yancy arrived at the Nolan house, Riley was sitting on the couch watching TV."You're back?" she greeted him.Daniel looked up as well. "Yancy, you're back?"Yancy handed Riley a box of cakes."Yeah. I passed that bakery you've been wanting to try, so I picked some up for you."Riley hesitated before asking, "How is he?"Yancy paused. "He's doing okay, but he keeps saying he wants to see you."Daniel gave an indignant snort."What nerve does he have asking to see Riles? Saving her was the least he could do!"His reaction made both Riley and Yancy laugh.Yancy couldn't deny that he was worried. After all, Yale had taken a knife for Riley. What if that sacrifice rekindled her old feelings for him?Still, he respected her right to make her own decisions."Do you want to go see him?"Riley hesitated before finally nodding.A flicker of sadness crossed Yancy's eyes, so faint it was almost imperceptible.Daniel, meanwhile, assumed his daughter still hadn't gotten over Yale."You're stil

The knife in Selise's hand caught the light, its reflection flashing before Riley's terrified eyes."Die, Riley Nolan!"As Selise lunged at her, both Yancy and Yale rushed forward to protect her. Yancy pulled Riley into his arms while Yale threw himself in front of them, taking the knife meant for her.Riley was so stunned that even with Yancy holding her, she couldn't seem to process what had just happened. Everyone in the restaurant stood frozen in shock. When Selise realized her attack had failed, she tried to pull the knife free and strike again, but a security guard rushed over and kicked her aside."Call an ambulance!""Someone's been stabbed!"Chaos erupted throughout the restaurant as the staff scrambled to call for emergency assistance."Riles, are you okay?" Yancy asked anxiously, looking down at Riley in his arms. She finally came to her senses and immediately began checking him for injuries."I'm fine, Riles." Yancy held her close, gently reassuring her.Meanwhile, Selise s

While keeping Selise locked away, he also launched a relentless campaign against her family's business.Lane Group had already been struggling with serious cash flow problems brought on by difficulties in its industry. The only reason the company had managed to stay afloat was that Selise and her father had secured Sullivan Group's support.
