Chapter 2

Author: Hearty June
As soon as he left the chapel, Zeke got a text. To punish him for his earlier "jealousy", Ruth had revoked his access to her account, even though his monthly spending limit had been only 300 dollars.

He let out a cold laugh, went home, and laid the signed divorce papers on the desk in her study. Then, he headed straight to his part-time job and started running delivery orders.

He had emptied his savings to pay for Margaret's medical bills. Now, to scrape together enough for a proper burial, he could only grind it out at work.

On the way, Zeke's thoughts drifted to his past. His mother had died young. His father had racked up a huge gambling debt and skipped town, leaving just him and Margaret to depend on each other. Later, he'd worked at a late-night food stall, earning money for Margaret's treatment.

The first time he'd met Ruth, she'd been drunk out of her mind and had thrown up all over him. He hadn't been disgusted—he'd even brought her home and taken care of her all night. He'd thought they would never cross paths again. He hadn't expected her to latch onto him after that.

For some reason, she'd started pursuing him like crazy, pulling every trick she could think of. Even though he wasn't part of the rich-kid crowd, he'd still heard plenty about her, the heiress of the Jensen family in Gristona.

He knew she changed boyfriends more often than outfits, and he knew she was just playing the field. He'd refused to accept her advances. On top of that, his family had been heavily in debt, and he had a sick grandmother to look after. Dating had been way too much of a luxury.

Ruth had refused to give up. She'd even shown up at the food stall to work alongside him. She'd given him all the money she'd earned, her eyes gleaming with devotion. "Zeke, I made this money myself. Use it to pay for your grandma's medical bills."

Zeke had felt too guilty to take the money. He'd even snapped at her, saying some really harsh things. As he'd watched her eyes fill with hurt, he'd still forced himself to drive her away.

Then, late one night, a drunk customer had cornered him at the food stall. Ruth had suddenly shown up, grabbed a stick, and struck the man repeatedly. In the fight, her leg had been broken, and the Jensen family had to drag her out of there and rush her to the hospital.

Zeke had thought he'd never see her again. But in the middle of the night, someone had tapped on his window. Ruth had slipped out under her family's noses and hobbled all the way over on her injured leg just to see him.

His heart had completely melted. He'd finally admitted he'd fallen for her, and he'd been madly in love with her since then. Back then, he'd believed nothing could ever come between them. After that, they'd naturally transitioned from dating to marriage.

During their first year as newlyweds, Ruth had genuinely treated Zeke well. But a year later, she'd suddenly gotten bored of him. She'd started resenting his frugality and acted like he was an embarrassment.

She hadn't even bothered to hide it when she started shamelessly flirting with Calvin, her new assistant at the time, the same way she'd once chased after Zeke.

Zeke had completely lost it and started getting revenge by maxing out her card. Every time Ruth spoiled Calvin, Zeke would buy himself something too, trying to compete for her attention—even if he hadn't liked the stuff at all. He'd just wanted Ruth to come back to him.

But all Ruth had done was sneer at him. "Looks like my mom was right about you after all. A social climber from some nameless family like yours was only ever after my money. If you can't learn to behave, I'll just have to teach you!"

At that moment, Zeke's heart had shattered. Before he could even process how fast Ruth's feelings for him had changed, Margaret's condition had suddenly taken a turn for the worse.

When he'd finally needed Ruth's money for something that mattered, she'd decided he was just being jealous, frozen his cards, and instead blown through her limit on Calvin overseas.

Now, Margaret was gone. Zeke's heart had gone numb with her, and he no longer needed Ruth's money.

…

When Zeke went home to pack, there really wasn't much that actually belonged to him. Since she'd lost interest in him, Ruth had hardly bought him anything.

He left with a single suitcase, found somewhere cheap to crash, and went right back to grinding deliveries.

One particular order came in. The note on it told him to pick up a box of condoms and said he'd get a fat tip. The delivery address was a villa way out in the suburbs. Clearly, whoever placed the order had money to burn.

Zeke figured that if he did a really good job, maybe he could land a big enough tip to speed up saving for Margaret's headstone.

The moment the villa door swung open, he froze. A couple's photo of Ruth and Calvin hung on the wall. The living room was overflowing with beautifully wrapped gifts, more than the space could possibly hold.

A moving truck was parked out front. Two workers were hauling in more boxes.

"Man, the lady who owns this place really spoils her husband. I heard even the cheapest thing here costs a few million dollars!"

"And there's another whole truckload of luxury goods on the way. Apparently, one house wasn't big enough to hold everything, so she bought this villa just for all the stuff."

Zeke turned to leave after saying his piece.Ruth clutched his hand in a death grip, as if she were a drowning person grabbing the only piece of driftwood. "What about you? Aren't you staying with me? Zeke, I'm really weak right now. You can't just walk away and leave me like this…"Disgust flashed in Zeke's eyes. "You're not a child, Ruth. I helped you this time because I didn't want to watch you die outside my place, but there won't be a next time. If you want to throw your life away, that's your business. Don't try to guilt-trip me into staying."He was done spoiling her the way he had in the past. Her eyes reddened, and she broke down crying like a child. "What do I have to do for you to forgive me? Why is it that my life's been nothing but hell ever since you left?"She rambled on in broken sentences, talking about how she'd been drinking herself numb every day and how she thought of him like a madwoman every single night. Without him, she drifted through her days like a ghos

Zeke didn't know what Maeve had done, but Ruth hadn't bothered him these past few days. He only heard that Ruth had spent a fortune to have a renowned priest perform rites for Margaret's soul.To Zeke, it was like buying an expensive pair of shoes for a man who'd already lost his leg—pointless, no matter how one looked at it.As the days went by, Zeke built up a fair amount of business experience and could even handle negotiations for Maeve on his own. This time, he took part in a bidding round and landed an asset package with excellent prospects. When he got back to the office, Maeve gathered the team, popped a bottle of champagne, and celebrated with him.Zeke had been smiling more and more lately. He looked every bit the polished professional in his tailored gray suit and gold-rimmed glasses. Now that he was making his own money, he finally had the confidence to buy what he liked. He no longer had to live at Ruth's mercy and stare at his phone every month, waiting for her to wi

Ruth sneered. "Let you go? You ruined things between Zeke and me, you asshole. You don't even deserve to beg for mercy!"She grabbed the whip and lashed Calvin over and over until his howls filled the room."Enough of this nonsense, Ruth! I heard Zeke's back, but he's been ignoring you despite you chasing after him. This is your retribution for not trusting him from the start. You brought this on yourself!"That only fueled Ruth's anger. But then something suddenly occurred to her, and she forced herself to calm down. She figured maybe Zeke refused to forgive her because he didn't think she was sincere enough. If she just showed him how serious she was and pursued him like she had in the beginning, he would eventually soften and take her back.So the next day, she went to get her assets notarized. First, she transferred ten million dollars to Zeke. Then, she signed over 15% of her company shares to him. She even bought an expensive car and a villa and had both put in his name.Ze

Ruth had somehow managed to dig up updates on Zeke. That day, she showed up downstairs at Sutton Group's building. Her eyes looked a little sunken, with dark, tired shadows beneath them. The moment she saw Zeke stride out of the building, all sharp suit and confidence, she stepped forward. "I found out that you're working for the Suttons now."Zeke saw no point in hiding it. He said coolly, "That's none of your business, Ruth. Don't forget that we're already divorced."Her face went pale. "I never wanted to actually divorce you! Calvin had me fooled then—that's why I tricked you into signing the divorce papers! But I never once thought about really leaving you. I was planning to remarry you after placating him!"Ruth's frantic explanation only struck Zeke as utterly ridiculous. "So you think cheating on me while we were married is justified? You think killing my grandmother is justified? You listened to some con man and pushed me into the abyss over and over. What right do you hav

Zeke slowly opened up to Maeve, talking in bits and pieces. He told her about his miserable childhood and how, when he finally grew up, he still couldn't see people for who they really were. He didn't hide anything about what had happened with Ruth, either.Getting to pour his heart out in a foreign country to someone who understood him was cathartic. He finally got to vent, and the pent-up frustration in his chest eased a lot.Maeve's heart ached more and more for him. When she heard how Ruth had hurt him, anger flared in her eyes. In the end, she couldn't help squeezing his hand. She said, "If you need money, I can help you out."Zeke let out a soft laugh. "I haven't done anything for you. Why would you give me money?""I'm not giving it to you for nothing. I've been volunteering out here for two years, and I'm planning to go back home next month. I still have a business to run back in Gristona—it's a company I started there. Once I'm back, I'll need someone I can trust to help

Zeke had already been in Fredove for three months. When he first arrived, it was Maeve who'd driven a Jeep out to pick him up.At first, she'd wrapped herself from head to toe, covering every inch of her face. Zeke had almost thought she was some kind of criminal and hadn't even dared to get into the car.Fortunately, Larry had contacted Zeke online ahead of time and stepped forward to explain everything. Otherwise, it would've turned into a whole mess.Zeke had apologized, his face burning with embarrassment, and trailed after Maeve, obediently doing every task she assigned him.To his surprise, as they got to know each other better, they realized they didn't just share a hometown—they'd even gone to the same college. That strange twist of fate had pulled the two foreigners in Fredove a little closer. Maeve and Zeke worked together on their volunteer work. They treated the wounds of injured baby antelopes, restored damaged habitats, and cleared trash out of wetlands…By the tim
