Chapter 4

Author: River of Slumber
For the last decade, I always assumed that I was the reason why we couldn't have a child. I took many different types of medication and was subjected to constant ridicule.

I only learned the truth yesterday after the private investigator obtained a sealed folder from the hospital. It contained the record that Henry had destroyed.

A smile stretched across my lips as I brushed my fingers across the USB drive in my bag.

"You're right. Felicity must be a lucky star. We have to make sure to celebrate as much as we can tomorrow night since there's a good omen."

The charity gala was hosted in a hotel in the heart of the city.

In the hall, the guests chatted among each other while balancing wine glasses in their hands.

Henry was dressed in a suit. He accepted compliments from the guests as he weaved his way through the crowd.

"You really are a Good Samaritan, Mr. Gibbons. It's not easy to support the students in the mountains for so many years."

"You flatter me. I'm just doing what I can for the students' sake."

Meanwhile, I stood in a corner while wearing a gown that I had purchased three years ago and the pearl necklace that Henry had given me.

Suddenly, a commotion erupted among the crowd.

"Who's that? She's beautiful!"

"I think she's the student representative."

Felicity strode into the hall while locking arms with a male celebrity. She was dressed in a gown. The Artanan white pearl necklace around her neck was especially eye-catching.

She immediately spotted me standing in the corner. Her lips curled up into a smile as she let go of the male celebrity and approached me, holding a glass of red wine.

"Good evening, Mrs. Gibbons—Oh!"

She suddenly lurched forward as she tripped over her own two feet, spilling the red wine all over my chest and staining the front of my gown.

"Oh god! I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to, Mrs. Gibbons!"

Although Felicity was apologizing to me, she had a hand pressed to her stomach.

"Oh, my stomach…" she moaned. "Why did you push me, Mrs. Gibbons?"

The other guests immediately surrounded us.

"What happened?"

"I think Mr. Gibbons' wife pushed the student representative."

"Why did she do that? Felicity just lost her balance."

Henry swiftly rushed over when he noticed the commotion. He didn't even spare a single glance at me and held Felicity, exclaiming, "Are you alright, Felicity? Did you hurt yourself?"

"I don't blame Mrs. Gibbons for what happened, Henry. I was the one who lost my balance."

Tears rolled down Felicity's cheeks as she collapsed against Henry's chest. "But my stomach hurts so much…"

Henry whipped his head around to glare at me. "What did you do, you wicked wretch? Felicity is still so young. Why can't you tolerate her? I won't forgive you if anything happens to her!"

"I didn't push her," I explained as I stood my ground, allowing the wine to drip from my gown. "You can check the surveillance footage. She's the one who crashed into me."

"How dare you try to pin the blame on her?" Henry roared, reaching out to shove me. "Get out of my sight! Don't get in my way! I need to send Felicity to the hospital!"

I staggered backward and fell since I was wearing high heels.

A loud bang resounded around the hall when I hit my forehead against the table with the champagne tower.

Pain exploded from the point of impact. Something warm and sticky flowed down my brow.

Chaos erupted in the hall.

Henry didn't spare another glance at me. He picked up Felicity and roared at the security guards, "Why the hell are you just standing around? Call an ambulance! Now! I won't let any of you off the hook if anything happens to the heir of the Gibbons family!"

Silence immediately descended upon the hall at Henry's words. Everyone's gaze shifted.

I heard someone whispering, "I didn't know siring an heir was part of the deal when he decided to sponsor her."

Henry also seemed to realize that he had misspoken. However, he had other, more pressing matters to attend to. He rushed out of the hall while carrying Felicity, leaving me to stare at his retreating back.

Blood continued to flow down my cheek, mixing with the red wine. I pressed a hand to my bleeding forehead as I slowly crawled back up to my feet.

I knew that the guests were pointing at me and whispering among themselves.

I didn't feel any pain.

I reached into my handbag that was soaked with red wine and rummaged through it until my fingers brushed against some paper.

I pulled the report out of my bag and lifted it high into the air.

Cole was deeply wounded by Henry's vicious attack. Although he had survived, he would be wheelchair-bound for the rest of his life.Meanwhile, Felicity only suffered minor scrapes. But she had a miscarriage due to the immense stress she experienced. On top of that, she had also been jostled around during the incident. As for Henry, he was arrested on the spot for first-degree assault. However, the case wasn't over just yet.I had submitted a thick stack of evidence to the authorities that proved that Henry had committed tax evasion. He was also prosecuted for fraud and embezzlement of the charity's funds. As a result, he would be spending many years behind bars for his crimes.…A month had passed by the time I saw Henry again at the detention center. He was bald and dressed in a prisoner's uniform. He had lost an alarming amount of weight and no longer looked like himself. His eyes were also hazy and unfocused.Henry immediately threw himself against the glass and frantically

"Turn it off! Turn it off right now! It's all fake! Everything was doctored!" Henry screamed as he threw himself at the control panel. However, the strength fled from his legs after he took only two steps forward, and he crashed to the ground. He pressed a hand to his chest and heaved for breath, his ruddy red face slowly turning purple."M-Medicine…" he mumbled as he reached out his hand and pointed a shaky finger at me.I had nitroglycerin pills in my bag, but I simply looked at him."Are you looking for this, Mr. Gibbons?"I leisurely pulled out the bottle of pills from my bag and twisted the cap open. I then let it slip from my fingers. The pills were scattered all over the floor, rolling out of Henry's reach. The reporters trampled on them until they turned to powder."Oops. My hand slipped."The cameras flashed endlessly as the reporters surrounded Henry."Do you have an explanation for the medical report, Mr. Gibbons?""Who does the child in Felicity's womb belong to?"

After closing the door behind me, I walked down the hallway and turned the corner before stopping to put on my Bluetooth headset. Not only had I left the forged balance sheet in Felicity's ward, but I had also stuck a small listening device under a chair.I could hear Felicity hastily dialing someone's number through the headset."Hello? We're done for, Cole! That wrinkly, old man doesn't have any money. He's been lying to me this whole time! It's true! I've seen his company's balance sheet. He's hundreds of millions of dollars in debt! We should run away while we still can!"The child? Why the hell would I want to keep an illegitimate bastard? I'm going to get it aborted as soon as possible since I'm not too far along yet. Besides, it doesn't even belong to Henry. It'll just be a burden if I keep it."I immediately tapped the record button."Hurry and pick me up, Cole! We can take the jewelry and bags that we swindled from him in the past with us and leave tonight!"A man's voi

Someone frantically pressed the bell, not even 20 minutes later.I opened the door to see Henry standing on the other side. His tailored suit was wrinkled, and his tie was askew. His eyes were also bloodshot. He tried to rush into the room when he spotted me, but I swiftly blocked his path."Did you bring the divorce agreement?"Henry was momentarily stunned before he pulled out the document from his briefcase. He fixed a smile on his face and exclaimed, "I did! Honey, I know that you're angry at me because I'm rarely home, but everything's just a misunderstanding! The organizers forced me to film that video for publicity—""Shut up."I grabbed the divorce agreement and flipped through it. It was blatantly obvious that Henry had modified the assets division section to serve his own needs. On the surface, he was giving me a few properties and millions of dollars in cash. He was even giving me one of his subsidiaries that seemed to be making a profit. However, in reality, the pr

The results were printed on the report."Name: Henry Gibbons.Diagnosis: Bilateral cryptorchidism and azoospermia (congenital infertility)."Chaos erupted in the hall. The guests were momentarily stunned when I lifted the report into the air, but it didn't take long for them to snap back to their senses, and for an uproar to ripple through the crowd.Camera flashes were going off endlessly.I didn't point the report directly at the camera lenses. Instead, I only showed the hospital's and Henry's names. I also used my bloodstained fingers to cover up the diagnosis that Henry had azoospermia.I wanted Henry to plummet from his pedestal when he was at the highest point. I didn't want to reveal such an earth-shattering revelation during such a small commotion. The security guards were at a loss for what to do.I tucked the report back into my bag before striding out of the hotel with a straightened back, pressing a hand to my injured forehead.…"Who gave you this nasty wound?"
