~Samantha Lee~

The bass thumps through the floorboards, it's a welcome distraction, anything to drown out the insidious echo of Claire's voice, I tilt my head back, letting the cheap tequila burn a path down my throat and lose myself in the crush of the crowd.

I shudder at the thought of everything I had seen and heard, I signal the makeshift bartender for another shot. Forget him! Forget the possessive way he'd grabbed my hip, the low growl in his throat when he kissed me. Forget the moments after, when the world narrowed to the tangle of our limbs and the soft sound of our breathing.

"Whoa! Easy there tiger." Rachel's hand closes over mine, intercepting the shot glass just before it reaches my lips. Her brow is furrowed with a concern that makes my stomach twist with guilt. "That's your fourth in what, thirty minutes? Did something happen at home?"

"Nothing happened," I lie forcing a bright careless smile. "I'm just trying to have fun. Isn't that the point of a party?" I grab her ha

~Samantha Lee~The sound that escaped Claire's lips wasn't one of concern or surprise, it was a laugh. A light, airy, utterly dismissive laugh that made the hairs on my arms stand up. She tilted her head and gave me a look I'd only ever seen teachers give to students who'd asked a spectacularly stupid question."Hate you?" she repeated, the corner of her mouth twitching into a condescending smile. "Samantha, why on earth would I hate you? That's... wow. That's a little dramatic, don't you think?"My jaw was so tight I could feel a headache blooming behind my eyes."I'm not trying to be dramatic, Claire," I said, "I'm trying to understand.""There's nothing to understand," she said, "I was worried, that's all. Tyler and I... we've been in each other's pockets since we were in diapers. Our moms are best friends, he's practically the brother I never had. When we go out and I can’t find him, it's only natural for me to be concerned, for both of you."I felt a wave of exhaustion wash over

It had been three days since my parents came back. Three days that felt like a blur. The house was louder, but somehow I felt empty inside me. It wasn't looking like how they left at all. It was different, not just slightly but a noticeable difference. Every morning I told myself to act normal, and every night I failed again. Hayden barely spoke to me. He smiled when he had to, said good morning, said goodnight, but the silence between those words was enough to crush me.I was sitting on my bed, staring at nothing. My mind reeled off so many thoughts and I just could not do anything about it. I stared at the ceiling hoping to piece the pieces together but nothing came up.The pictures that hung on the wall often reminded me of how much I was attached to him now it only reminded me how long each day felt. My thoughts were everywhere. I replayed the last time I saw Hayden’s face, the guilt in his eyes, the way he looked like he wanted to say something but didn’t. It looped in my head

  • Sport Affair (His Dirty Little Secret)    39: Hate Me

~Samantha Lee~The first thing I registered was the light slicing through a gap in the curtains, it was too bright way too bright for… for whatever time it was supposed to be.The second thing was the warmth pressed against my entire backside, a muscular arm draped possessively over my waist that belonged to Tyler.I carefully slowly twisted in his arms, not wanting to wake him as I watched his face, his dark lashes rested against his cheekbones, and a lock of sweaty hair had fallen across his forehead. My fingers itched to brush that hair from his face, to trace the line of his jaw. I was so lost in cataloging the surprisingly beautiful details of Tyler that I almost missed the buzzing of my phone. My eyes shot to where my phone and before I could grasp it, the call ended and I saw 17 missed calls from Claire, 8 missed calls from Mom, and 4 texts from Claire.“Oh, shit. Shit, shit, shit.”My heart skipped a beat as I mumbled, my sudden movement woke Tyler fully. He blinked, his eyes

~Samantha Lee~Mortified. That was the first word that clawed its way through the alcohol-soaked fog in my brain. No, that wasn't strong enough, I was a walking, talking, breathing vessel of pure, unadulterated humiliation. The sour, stench of my own stomach contents clung to me like a second skin, it was marinated into my hair, my clothes, and most horrifyingly, all over the front of Tyler.“Come with me,” Tyler said through gritted teeth. I felt shame, so I just had to bend my head and follow him. I squeezed my eyes shut, wishing the floor would swallow me whole. He nudged a door open with his hip and guided me into the room, I had met him the last time I got drunk at a party. Tyler kept walking until he stopped in front of the bathroom, we both stepped and without a word, he gripped the hem of his now-ruined t-shirt and pulled it over his head. And just like that, the air in the small bathroom shifted. The temperature shot up by at least twenty degrees. My brain, which had been s
