Chapter 3

Author: Thirteen Pennies
I pulled out the heirloom pendant from inside my shirt, the stone still warm from the heat of my body.

Poppy didn't know that my engagement to her was nothing more than a deal. Her parents never considered me their future son-in-law.

They paid me a monthly salary to look after her because they knew nothing about my past and thought I was a bastard who wasn't even worthy of marrying Poppy. The moment she no longer needed me, I would be kicked out without a second thought.

Naturally, they had no intention of handing the heirloom pendant over to me.

It was Poppy who defied them, demanded that they give it to her, and put it on me herself.

I would always remember her gentle whisper. "Milo, you are my fiance. You should have what's rightfully yours."

Now, she wanted to take back the heirloom pendant meant for her fiance, along with the special affection she had once shown me.

Without hesitation, I passed it to Trevor. "It belongs with its rightful owner. No need to return it to me."

Poppy frowned. "This is just a loan. What are you implying? Are you saying you don't want to be my fiance anymore?"

Trevor sneered. "What else could it be? He's just playing the victim again to win your sympathy. It's just like when we were kids. To spite us, he refused to get into the car and insisted on walking home barefoot, acting as if we'd mistreated him."

Poppy seemed to recall something. Her expression darkened, and she looked somewhat displeased.

But that wasn't the truth.

Following Trevor's return, he often brought up the hardships he'd endured, usually in tears. "I'd get up before sunrise to feed the pigs. Then, during winter, I would climb the mountain barefoot to collect firewood. I only had one meal most days, and half the time, there was nothing to go with it."

My parents were upset to learn that their biological son had suffered all these years while an outsider like me had lived comfortably, so they made me experience what Trevor had been through.

From that day onward, I'd be forced to wake up at sunrise to pull weeds and walk home barefoot in the dead of winter. I was left to survive on scraps while the whole family feasted on delicacies. Even the servants ate better food than I did.

And if I begged them not to treat me like this, they told me my experiences were nothing compared to Trevor's, who had it harder than me.

But I didn't cause his hardships. After all, I was just an orphan they had taken in.

It didn't take long for people to hear about the abuse. My parents pinned all the blame on me to protect their reputation. They painted me as a bitter kid who couldn't stand Trevor's return and had gone out of my way to humiliate them.

I became the bad kid everyone loved to hate, and all the other kids in our circle turned against me.

Despite our long-standing friendship, Poppy also betrayed me. She soon started dating Trevor.

I told her the truth out of fear that she would hate me. But regardless of what I told her or how much evidence I showed her, she stopped believing me and even began to despise me.

I said nothing as I met Poppy's questioning gaze and simply shook my head. Since I was leaving anyway, I let the misunderstanding stand.

I turned to leave, but Poppy grabbed my arm and let out a resigned sigh. "Come along with us to dinner. Get in the car."

I nodded. This would be my last meal with them before I left.

I got into the backseat and stayed silent for the entire drive as Poppy chatted and laughed with Trevor about the happy times they'd shared.

The car pulled up at Poppy's house, and it wasn't until we walked into the living room that I realized my parents were there too.

It finally dawned on me why Poppy had invited me when a kidney donation consent form was placed in front of me.

Trevor had been diagnosed with uremia and needed a kidney transplant.

No matter what, I knew I didn't want this twisted kind of love anymore.I pulled my hand away and started to pay.My harsh words hurt Poppy, yet she still insisted on paying my bill. "I'll pay. You just arrived here, so money must be a little tight for you."Her concern came too late to mean anything to me. Instead, I felt powerless, as if I could never escape her."Oh, don't worry. Your parents were very generous. They gave me more than enough to settle down here."The thought of the contract caused Poppy to freeze. Her eyes reddened. "Milo, I know I've hurt you a lot recently, but I've realized my mistakes. Please don't treat me like this. We don't have much time together as it is. Let's not waste it."I shook my head. "We don't have a future together anymore."Poppy faltered. "I read your diary. I know you love me. So why are you being so cruel to me now?"Her words left me speechless.Yes, I used to love her so much, but my family's mistreatment of me and her betrayal had

For years, Poppy had been too caught up in everything around her to see what was right in front of her. The man who truly loved her had always been by her side, yet she never realized it.Just then, someone knocked on the door.Poppy wiped her tears away, thinking that I had returned. She eagerly opened the door, only to see her assistant. He said, "Ms. Steele, I went to Mr. Nott's company. He was transferred to the headquarters in Mardor and took a flight out this morning."Poppy quickly grabbed her car keys and instructed, "Book me the earliest flight. I'm going to find him now!"…I was out running errands when I ran into Poppy. I rubbed my eyes, thinking I was seeing things, and was just about to walk away when Poppy threw herself into my arms."Milo, I miss you so much…"I froze, realizing that this wasn't my imagination.Poppy held me for a long time, only letting go when she felt me struggling. With a little pout, she complained, "How could you just disappear without sa

Amy and Benjamin even went as far as to bring up every trivial incident from my childhood, branding me as someone who was rotten to the core. But really, after Trevor came back, nothing I did seemed right to them. If I ate too much, they'd curse me for having a bottomless appetite, and if I ate too little, they'd say I was doing it to spite Trevor. When Trevor tried to feed me spicy food, I refused, saying I couldn't eat it while taking cold medicine. Amy and Benjamin accused me of being fussy. I then explained that it was right there in the instructions. They lashed out at me, saying that I owed everything I had to them and demanding to know what right I had to show off in front of Trevor.Being berated became part of my daily life. They always claimed that I was not good enough. But the truth was, they just didn't love me.Meanwhile, Poppy's parents looked down on me for my lack of education, saying I wasn't good enough for her. After reading the contract, Poppy put it on the

After thinking it over, Poppy raised her head. "No! I'm not going to believe your one-sided story. I'll find Milo so that you can talk this out in person."Trevor, Benjamin, and Amy made every effort to convince Poppy, but she was unmoved, leaving them completely at a loss.Trevor's face turned scarlet with rage. "Poppy, it's only been five years since we last saw each other, and you don't even believe me anymore? You really do still hold it against me for going missing, don't you?"In the past, whenever a conflict arose, Trevor would play the victim, and the soft-hearted Poppy would quickly give in to him.But this time, she strode forward and grabbed his collar. "Then take off your clothes and show me the wound from the surgery. That'll settle this once and for all! If I'm wrong, I'll apologize to you!"Trevor's face paled. He wasn't sick to begin with, and since he was afraid of pain, he would never put himself in danger just to set me up. Naturally, he had no wounds on his bod

"Milo, I'm going to be honest with you. I wasn't sick at all. I only did this so you'd finally understand that Mom, Dad, and Poppy have never once been on your side. If it means saving me, your pathetic life is expendable to them!"Poppy tensed up upon hearing those words. The thought of how she'd joined in as the others pressured me at the dinner table made her heart ache. She remembered the despair in my eyes as her grip tightened around the voice recorder. "Trevor, how dare you lie to me?"Poppy was livid. She stormed out and headed straight for Trevor's place.Trevor didn't know I had left, so he was surprised to see Poppy return. He assumed she had changed her mind. "Poppy, it's good that you've come to your senses. Milo is nothing but a bastard. How could he possibly be better than me? If he behaves himself and stops entertaining fantasies, maybe we'll still accept him as one of us. If not, he can forget about ever coming back."Amy and Benjamin walked over, smiles on thei

Poppy accepted the gift box, beaming with happiness. She nodded. "I'll come and pick you up in four days. Then we'll get married. Milo, we have to be together forever, okay?"I nodded vaguely and watched her walk away.Seconds later, I received a message from Trevor."Milo, believe it or not, all I have to do is say the word, and you won't be getting the pendant back."His message reminded me that today was the day he was supposed to return it to me.But I paid no mind to his provocation. I hadn't intended to take it back in the first place.I was about to put my phone away when Poppy called."I'm so sorry, Milo. Trevor is throwing a huge fit. He's just been discharged from the hospital and is still unwell. Getting so worked up is bad for his health. Can you let him keep the pendant for a few more days? I'll definitely get it back for you in four days."She only remembered that Trevor was sick, forgetting that I had just come off the operating table too."It's fine," I replied
