Chapter 5

Poppy accepted the gift box, beaming with happiness. She nodded. "I'll come and pick you up in four days. Then we'll get married. Milo, we have to be together forever, okay?"

I nodded vaguely and watched her walk away.

Seconds later, I received a message from Trevor.

"Milo, believe it or not, all I have to do is say the word, and you won't be getting the pendant back."

His message reminded me that today was the day he was supposed to return it to me.

But I paid no mind to his provocation. I hadn't intended to take it back in the first place.

I was about to put my phone away when Poppy called.

"I'm so sorry, Milo. Trevor is throwing a huge fit. He's just been discharged from the hospital and is still unwell. Getting so worked up is bad for his health. Can you let him keep the pendant for a few more days? I'll definitely get it back for you in four days."

She only remembered that Trevor was sick, forgetting that I had just come off the operating table too.

"It's fine," I replied and hung up.

For the next few days, Poppy spent most of her time with Trevor, and he kept sending me messages to provoke me.

The next day, he sent me a video of him and Poppy making a birthday cake together, looking like the happiest couple in the world.

By the third day, they had already had their wedding photos taken.

On the day I left the country, Trevor sent me another message. "Milo, Poppy and I are going to City Hall to get married. We'll be going on our honeymoon soon after. Stop clinging to Poppy. She belongs to me."

I ignored him as I always did. Then I checked myself out of the hospital, headed to the airport, and boarded my flight.

Goodbye, Poppy.

At the same time, Trevor put his phone away and smiled at Poppy, who was all dressed up. "Poppy, are you done? We should be heading to City Hall now."

Poppy put the cap back on her lipstick, swatted his outstretched hand away, and snatched the pendant from him. "Yeah, I'm getting married, but not to you."

Trevor was taken aback. "Poppy, haven't we been happy together lately, just like we used to be? What do you mean by this? Did Milo try to get between us again?"

Poppy's eyes turned frosty. "This is exactly how you treated me before. I want you to know what it feels like to be dumped without warning!"

Trevor had never been dumped before, and he was furious. "Poppy, you'd choose that bastard over me?"

Poppy slapped him hard across the face. "Watch your mouth! He's my fiance, and he's also the one who saved your life. Is that how you should talk about your savior?"

Ignoring the hysterical Trevor behind her, she drove to the hospital, humming a tune and carrying the gift I had given her.

"Milo, I'm here! Do you miss me?" Poppy pushed the door open, only to find the hospital room empty except for a nurse.

The nurse, who was making the bed, informed her, "Ms. Steele, Mr. Nott has already been discharged."

Poppy messaged me, confused. When I didn't reply, she suddenly remembered the gift box I had given her. She opened it and found the voice recorder inside, immediately assuming that I was too shy to confess to her directly and had chosen to do it through the recording instead.

With a smile, Poppy pressed play. To her surprise, it was Trevor's voice that came through.
