Chapter 1

Author: Gleaming Greenery
It was already late at night when I returned to the hospital from the archives.

Antonino had just pulled through. My husband, Adriano Moretti, was keeping watch beside his bed.

The moment he saw me walk in, he glared at me furiously. "Is this how you take care of Antonino? He got sick under your care!"

In the past, I would have tolerated his angry accusation. Now, I only found him terrifyingly unfamiliar.

I looked at the face on the hospital bed that was so much like his. It turned out that it wasn't a mere resemblance between nephew and uncle. It was the resemblance between a son and his father.

Antonino reached out to me, asking to be held. "Mama."

I stopped in my tracks. I had heard him call me that for more than two thousand days and nights. For seven years, he would only let me hold him whenever he was sick. When nightmares woke him in the middle of the night, I was the only one he wanted beside him.

But now, that one word felt like a knife piercing right into my chest. The pain was so sharp that even my breathing was shaky.

Adriano noticed something was wrong with me. "Lucrezia?"

I walked over and tucked the blanket around Antonino. "I'm fine. I just have a bit of a headache."

Vittoria Moretti, who was sitting in a reclining chair, stirred at our voices. The moment she saw me, the first thing that came out of her mouth was criticism.

She berated me. "You're finally back. Antonino just came out of surgery. He can't be left alone right now. You're his mother. How could you run off at a time like this?"

I looked at her.

Seven years ago, she had told me that every night when she closed her eyes, she dreamed of Luca Moretti, who had unfortunately died. She had said that Antonino carried the Moretti bloodline and couldn't be left to wander the streets with a woman who couldn't even protect herself.

Her tears softened my heart, and I personally brought Antonino into the Moretti estate.

When he first arrived, he couldn't sleep in an unfamiliar bed. He cried so hard all night that he could barely catch his breath. I carried him through the halls, walking back and forth until he finally calmed down.

When he had a high fever, I stayed by his side until dawn. I took him to school on his first day. When he lost his first baby tooth, I tucked it away in a small silver box.

The first time he called me "Mama", even Adriano's eyes turned red. To take care of him, I gradually stopped involving myself in the family's affairs.

Everyone told me that Antonino might not have been born to me, but after I'd raised him for so long, he was practically like a son to me. I kept telling myself those words to deceive myself for seven whole years.

I met Vittoria's gaze steadily and said, "Once Antonino recovers, take him to the family chapel to see Luca. He's ten now. It's time to formally add his name to the family's records as Luca's son."

Vittoria's expression stiffened visibly. Adriano looked up at me too.

I continued, "Have the lawyers prepare a formal paternity declaration as well. It'll come in handy when he eventually inherits his share of the family's fortune."

Vittoria immediately waved her hand and said, "Luca has been dead for years. Let him rest in peace. Everyone in the family knows who Antonino's father is. There's no need to complicate things."

I smiled faintly and responded, "You're right."

Adriano kept staring at me. "Lucrezia, what's gotten into you tonight?"

I slipped my handbag onto my shoulder. "Nothing. Stay here with him. I'm going back to the estate to pick up a few things."

On the day my baby was born, Adriano waited outside the hospital for 14 hours. No one had told him. Antonino was the one who secretly called him.The delivery did not go smoothly, but thankfully, there were no complications in the end. When I woke up, Matteo was sitting beside my bed. Antonino sat on the other side, his eyes all red from crying. The moment he saw me open my eyes, he stood up. "Mama, my little brother is so cute. I love him."I looked toward the bassinet. The child I had fought so hard to bring into this world was sleeping peacefully.Suddenly, I heard footsteps outside the door.Matteo frowned and said, "Adriano is still outside."I was silent for a moment. Then, I said, "Let him in."When Adriano pushed open the door, he was still damp from the rain. He didn't come near the bed. He simply stood a few steps away, looking at the baby in the bassinet. His eyes quickly turned red as he asked, "Can I see him?"I nodded. He walked over to the bassinet but hesita

For the next two months, Adriano came once a week. He no longer tried to force his way through the gates or send expensive gifts. He simply stood outside and handed a letter to the guard. In the first letter, he told me the truth about how Antonino had been brought to the estate. In the second, he admitted that every time he had put off having a child, it was because he was afraid that once I had a child of my own, I would stop putting Antonino first. The third letter contained only one sentence. "I loved you, but I never learned how to respect you."I read every one of those letters, but I never replied to a single one.Adriano began doing the things he should have been responsible for all along. He accompanied Antonino to therapy, helped Elena become part of her son's life again, and stopped Vittoria from blaming me for any of it.The first time Antonino came to see me, he was clutching the silver box that contained his baby teeth. He stood at the doorway, afraid to come any cl

That afternoon, Matteo brought me the complete recording of the Moretti famiglia council meeting. In front of every senior member of the family, Adriano publicly acknowledged that Antonino was his biological son.Vittoria slapped Adriano across the face and questioned, "Do you know what the consequences are if you do this?"Adriano replied steadily, "I do."Vittoria roared, "They'll say the Don of the Moretti famiglia betrayed his wife and used his dead brother's name to hide his illegitimate son!"Adriano looked at her and said, "Well, that's the truth."Vittoria's face turned livid. "Are you really going to destroy our reputation for that woman?""Lucrezia is not 'that woman,' Mama," Adriano said, removing the signet that symbolized his authority within the family and placing it on the table. He stated firmly, "She's the wife I deceived for seven years."On that very day, Vittoria lost her authority to interfere in the family's affairs. The agreement Elena had signed all thos

Three days after I returned to the Sala estate, Adriano appeared at the gates. He brought my clothes, our wedding photos, and an entire carload of things he'd bought for the baby.Matteo told him to take everything and leave.Adriano stood outside the gates. "I just want to see her."The guard answered calmly, "Ms. Sala doesn't want to see you."He begged, "Tell her I can explain everything about Antonino."The guard responded, "She says you had seven whole years to explain, and you chose to keep her in the dark."Adriano stayed outside the gates all night. The next morning, everything he had brought was returned to his car exactly as it had arrived. Only one manila envelope was left behind. Inside it was a formal divorce petition. That afternoon, Adriano called me.After I answered, he stayed silent for a long time before asking, "How are you feeling?"I said, "That's no longer something you need to know.""I'm the baby's father.""Then let the lawyers discuss your respons

Before dawn, members of the Sala famiglia arrived at the hospital. The one leading them was my older brother, Matteo Sala.Seven years ago, when I chose to marry Adriano, I had personally stopped the last car carrying Matteo as it was leaving the estate. Now, he stood at the door of my hospital room and stared at me for a long time. "Can you leave yourself?"I shook my head. "The doctor says I can't get out of bed yet."Matteo didn't ask why I had only contacted him now. He took off his coat and draped it over me before turning to have the transfer arrangements made. When Adriano returned, four bodyguards were pushing my hospital bed toward a private elevator. He stopped dead in his tracks. "Where are you taking my wife?"Matteo stepped in front of him. "Back to her own family."Adriano's expression darkened. "Lucrezia needs rest. She can't be moved over a long distance."Matteo looked him straight in the eye and said, "The Sala famiglia's medical team has taken over her care.

  • Stand-in Mother for the Don’s Love Child   Chapter 4

After everyone at the Moretti estate learned that I was pregnant, a strange tension settled over the entire household. It lasted until the afternoon of the fourth day when Vittoria burst into my bedroom in a panic. She said anxiously, "Antonino is missing!"I sat bolt upright. "What did you say?"She started making the sign of the cross repeatedly and frantically. "At noon, I said to Adriano that once the baby in your belly is born, Antonino will eventually become an outsider. I told him to figure out how to reassure the boy before that happens."I turned sharply toward her. "You said that in front of Antonino?"All color drained from Vittoria's face as she argued, "How was I supposed to know he was hiding behind the door? Besides, was anything I said untrue? Once your child is born, will you still care about Antonino the same way you did before? I just wanted Adriano to pay more attention to him."The sound of hurried footsteps came from downstairs. Adriano was already heading
