Author: When Snow Comes
I went back to my seat.

My childhood friend, Callum Rook, was talking to the guy next to him. When he saw me come back, he turned to me like he always did. "Where are your glasses?"

I rubbed my eyes, which were dry and sore from the sun. I said in a small voice, "I lost them."

Callum sighed and reached over to yank the curtain shut. "I'll walk you home tonight."

Maybe I'd just imagined what I heard when we were taking the photo.

…

When school let out, someone called Callum away. He told me to wait for him in the classroom, which I did. I waited and waited; two whole hours went by. I wanted to call him, but my phone had died.

A teacher finally walked past the room and spotted me. "Teresa, why haven't you gone home yet?"

She knew about my poor eyesight and offered to take me home, but I turned her down. I didn't want Callum to come back and not find me.

When she saw that my phone was dead, she helped me call him. 20 minutes later, he appeared in the doorway, breathing hard. He said, "I texted you and told you to go on ahead."

"I didn't see it." I held up my phone, suddenly at a loss. "My phone died."

He stared at me for a long moment, and there was a complicated look in his eyes. In the end, he didn't say anything.

"Let's go."

Callum didn't say a word the whole way. He just kept replying to messages on his phone.

I caught a whiff of a sweet, cloying perfume on him. He hadn't smelled like that earlier. Where had he just been?

When we reached the entrance to my apartment complex, someone suddenly called out to him. A few people were standing by the gate. I couldn't really make out their faces, but I smelled the same perfume from one of them that was on him.

Callum hurried a few steps toward them while I stayed where I was.

"What are you guys doing here?" he asked.

"The dessert place we're going to is right around here anyway. We figured we'd all walk over together later," someone answered.

The voice was soft and gentle. I'd heard it over the school PA system before. It belonged to Rita Johnson, the prettiest girl in our school.

"Got it. Just give me a sec while I walk her in."

"Seriously? You're already at the gate to her complex. Do you still have to walk her in?" someone asked, sounding impatient.

Callum's friend hurriedly explained, "Teresa has bad eyesight. She can't see well at night."

The other person clicked their tongue. "She looks fine during the day. Who knows if that's even true? It's Rita's birthday today, and we all had to make a detour. Teresa's not doing this on purpose to kill the mood, is she?"

I stood there, at a loss. My fingers twisted tighter and tighter around the hem of my shirt.

When Callum walked back over, I said in a small voice, "Go hang out with them. I can get home on my own."

He hesitated. "Are you… sure?"

"Yeah."

I turned and walked into the complex. Behind me, I could still hear them talking.

"Hmm? Aren't you gonna walk your bride all the way to her door, Callum?"

"She's just a friend. Don't be stupid!"

My footsteps paused for a second. In all these years, this was the first time he'd ever snapped back at someone like that.

The streetlights inside the complex were bright, but all they really did was make it a little easier for me to be sure that I wasn't headed the wrong way.

I felt my way forward, my eyes stinging. Before, when Callum didn't bother explaining, it was because he didn't care enough to. Now, he was doing it. Why? Because of Rita?

My leg hit something—I had no idea what—and I suddenly went sprawling to the ground. A sharp sting shot through my palm, and for a split second, my mind went blank.

Callum wasn't like this before.

Back then, our families lived across the hall from each other. He would hold my hand and walk me to and from school. He would go out of his way to ask the teacher to seat us together. Whenever our classmates made fun of me, he would stand up for me.

When did it start? When did he start finding me annoying?

"Teri!" Hurried footsteps sounded behind me. Callum pulled me up from the ground. "This is what you meant when you said you could do this alone?"

His tone was sharp, but he was careful as he checked me over for injuries. He took my hand and walked me all the way to my door.

That tiny spark in my heart, which had almost gone out, suddenly rekindled. Callum still cared about me.

"It's been a while, Teresa."I was a little surprised that Rita had come over to talk to me.She didn't beat around the bush. "I used to like Callum. You know that, right?"I nodded. I'd first heard about it at the very first class reunion, when one of Callum's friends had mentioned it."But I later gave up on him. Do you know why?" Rita didn't wait for me to answer and just kept going. "Because I realized all his emotions revolved around you. His happiness, his anxiety, his irritation, his panic… all of it."That was when I knew there was no room for me in his heart. I wasn't about to lower myself to force my way in either, so I let it go."I didn't understand why she was telling me all this, but she soon gave me the answer."I heard from the others that things between you and Callum aren't like they used to be. I don't know what happened between you two, but I was worried I might have had something to do with it. "That's why I came to clear the air. We never even shared a pr

I thought of my childhood.Back when I was little, even though Mom and Dad kept reminding me not to stand in the sun all the time, I still couldn't help wanting to play with the other kids. It wasn't until my eyes burned so badly from the light that I couldn't open them that I finally got scared.Callum had grabbed my hand and stayed by my side the whole time. At the time, I'd said to him, "You'll be my other pair of eyes from now on, okay?"He'd taken care of me for years after that. That tiny figure from my memories slowly overlapped with the Callum standing in front of me now.I wanted to say something, but I had no idea where to start. I could understand where he was coming from, but that didn't mean I could forgive him. After a long silence, I looked at him and said, "Callum, what's done is done. You can't change it, and regret doesn't help. Just… look forward."I picked up my things and left my seat.I'd just stepped out the door when Callum came after me. He asked carefu

The lighting was dim, but I could see that Callum's eyes were red.Honestly, I couldn't understand him. What happened at that class reunion back then was still burned into my memory. What was up with this act he was putting on now?"Callum, you're the one who told me to give you a break," I said.He hurriedly stepped toward me, rushing to explain. "It wasn't like that, Teri! I've always regretted what I said to you that day. I swear I didn't mean it like that. I've wanted to apologize for a long time, but… you blocked me."I figured I would apologize when the semester started, when we saw each other in person. But when I went to your place to look for you, your mom said you'd gone to Southlake University."His voice had a desperate, pleading edge to it. "Teri, I screwed up. Can you forgive me? Don't be this cruel to me, please.""I'm cruel?" I let out a mocking laugh. To this day, I remembered what he'd said standing outside that private room. I remembered how hot-and-cold he'd

Southlake University wasn't far from home, just about a three-hour drive. If anything really urgent happened, my Aunt Helen's place was nearby.I lived on campus most of the time and only went over to Aunt Helen's on some weekends. For longer breaks, I went back home.Besides classes, I joined a couple of clubs, which was how I made some like-minded friends.I never hid my eye issues, and I never tried to tough it out just for show. I pushed myself to try things, and after a while, I realized I could still do plenty on my own.During winter and summer breaks, I sometimes picked up part-time jobs, but I mostly traveled with my parents. Thinking about it now, I hadn't seen Callum for two whole years after starting college.Right before graduation, my family planned a long trip to New Javiston. A few days before we were supposed to leave, Mom called me. "Teri, the Rooks are coming with us on this trip."I went quiet for a few seconds. "Why didn't you tell me earlier?"Mom sounded a

My leaving had made Callum's whole summer vacation easier, but inside, he felt hollowed out. He'd planned to use the start of the semester to smooth things over between us. He never expected me to just slip away without a sound."How could she… We agreed we'd go to Berdona University together…" he mumbled, looking at Mom, a little at a loss.Mom was a bit surprised. "I thought she'd already talked it over with you."Callum shook his head without realizing it. His face was drained of color.Mom could more or less guess the reason when she thought of what I'd told her before. She sighed and said, "Cal, you must've had a hard time taking care of Teri all these years. She's had poor eyesight since she was a child; I've always felt guilty, so I inevitably ended up spoiling her."Because you two grew up together, I just got used to asking you to look after her. Without realizing it, I dumped my responsibilities onto you. Only after Teri talked to me the other day did I realize how much

Everyone immediately started whooping and egging Callum on.I sat there, at a loss, my fingers twisting together without me even realizing it.Callum's face darkened. He was quiet for a long time before finally saying, "Don't be ridiculous. Our families are close, and my parents just told me to look after her."The words sounded light, almost casual, but they hammered against my chest like blocks of ice. From beginning to end, those flutters and secret expectations I'd hidden away had all been nothing more than my own wishful thinking.I couldn't sit there any longer. I got up and went to the restroom, taking a good while to calm myself down. When I came out, I heard voices coming from the restroom across the hall."Callum, you're always hanging around Teresa. How are you supposed to get a girlfriend in the future? Rita used to be into you, but she's totally cooled off now because you're always glued to Teresa. You'd better keep some distance and stop sticking up for her, or you'r
