Chapter 3

Gregor Bridger watched the younger girl leave his office. Then he remembered she probably needed a pass for her next class. He walked out into the hallway that led to his office and found her against the wall, still clutching the picture with tears rolling down her face. He reached out to her shoulder, and she turned into his arms. Then he realized how this would look to anyone else, so he moved her back to his office. He moved the curtain to block the sight from anyone who dared pass his office and look into his office. One added thing he also locked the door quickly.

She needed time to process everything she had just learned. He had that time. He could remember thinking that it was overwhelming when he was told. He thought he would spend his life trying to find another one like him. He didn’t think that his first thought for the future would lead him straight to one. However, then he remembered the simple truth. They were drawn to each other, and they often found each other this way by accident.

Kristen Lambert was not what he was expecting to find, that was for sure. He had thought numerous times that someone who already knew what they were would be the easiest to get to know. Though he knew not many people had access to someone who really knew what they were. He had been lucky in that. She had not been.

He simply waited for her to speak. She was not sobbing, but the tears were running down her face. “I am going to call the office to have you excused for the rest of the day.”

“No, it is okay.” She said softly. “This period, I have a free one. I can pull myself together. I just can’t believe it.” Kristen stated as she looked at him. Then she realized how close he was to her. She took a step back, and he chuckled as he went back to his seat, being able to read her thoughts. The last thing he wanted was to scare her by being close. He knew that he was bigger than most men. She was smaller than most women.

“What don’t you believe?” he asked as he moved his chair back under his desk and looked back up to her.

“It isn’t what you said that I don’t believe. It is that I finally know.” She said as she sat down in the chair. “I was told to keep my head out of the clouds and to do this or that, but now it makes so much sense as to why I could never do that. Why I had to calm myself with the stars and outside.”

“It is an awakening of sorts.” He said as he leaned forward and steepled his fingers together. “The problem is the others. I do have to warn you there are groups claiming to be seeds as well. They aren’t, though. They will try and get the information that it seems we remember and then pervert it.”

“How?” she asked.

“Evolution.” He replied. “They are trying to change it. With the wrong information. All they are really doing is making it, so we all go into hiding and let them make fools of themselves.”

“What do you mean evolution?” Kristen asked as she looked at him.

“Kristen, think of the way that humans evolved. It gets confusing with the names, so I will say A, B, C with the humans that we are being C. Group A was the first type or one of the closest to us. They mated with the beginnings of group C, which is us. Then Group B was born. I know that sounds backward but just follow me. Group B didn’t fit with either of its parent types. However, some of those B’s could pass for group C and were excepted by them. Then they mated back with that group. They had the best immune systems of all the groups and other good traits because of the interbreeding. However, it was only a few. With time Group A and B both died out, but only a few have DNA from those types. They are the descendants of those. I assume that most of us the seeds come from that group. We evolved. That was when modern-day humans were born, really, and the comet or whatever used the earth to share its bounty. That is how we came to be.” He said as he looked at her.

“But wouldn’t that make our parents like carriers. Wouldn’t they be like us as well?” Kristen asked.

“It should, but that isn’t the way, though.” He said as he looked at her. “From what I understand and also that comes from what I know for some reason, it takes a special combination to unlock the seed within us. Basically, both of our parents had to have the correct thing and the correct combination of chromosomes for us to be here.”

“But then our siblings? I have ten of them. Wouldn’t they be like us?” Kristen asked.

“No.” he chuckled. “I have seven myself. Remember, not even siblings are really alike in life. I know my brothers and sister are not like me. I guess it would make sense that siblings should be more apt to be alike, but we are even more special because we don’t get to have others to see like us.”

“I think I get it.” She said. “I think it sucks, but I understand.”

“I mean, there is more, but that can be for later.”  He smiled. “Basically, we are a stage of evolution that might not ever be accepted as real. As far as I know, there is no real way to test for it either.”

“So what happens when two seeds find each other?” she asked as she looked at him.

“Hopefully, they remain friends and can help each other through the hard times.” He chuckled. “I didn’t think I would find one close to my age. I thought it would take years if it happened at all. Then I could be a mentor of sorts. We know things that other people do not know. We feel things differently than others as well. We will have to figure out everything. This part is as new to me as it is to you.”

“And then what would I be now?” she asked.

“Right now, you are my student.” He chuckled. “So I guess I am just your teacher. However, I also am the only other one who understands what you struggle with. So this room is always open to you. You can come here whenever you wish to or need to.”

“Thank you. It is rather calming.” She said with a smile as she felt like she could breathe again.

“I will have passes in my desk for if I have a class. They will be prewritten for you. However, do not abuse that.” He said with a smile.
