Chapter 1

I stared at the man standing onstage, putting on a show of impartiality and righteousness, and felt nothing but disgust.

When I was ten, I came down with a dangerously high fever and curled up on the couch, barely conscious.

Dad was already grabbing his leg, rushing to lock the front door behind him.

"Dad, I don't feel well…" I cried, begging him to take me to the hospital.

He pulled his hand away.

"Ian had just transferred schools and isn't adjusting well. He's having an emotional breakdown, and I need to go help him.

"You've only got a fever. Sleep it off, and you'll be fine. Stop being so dramatic."

That night, my fever spiked so badly that I started having seizures. I nearly died alone in the house.

When Dad finally came home in the middle of the night and saw vomit covering the floor, there wasn't a trace of concern on his face. If anything, he looked annoyed.

"Some people don't even have enough to eat, and you were born into a family that can give you everything. How can you not even take care of yourself?"

Back then, I thought I simply wasn't good enough, so I worked myself to the bone. I studied harder than anyone else, desperate to become someone Dad could be proud of.

For the core data behind my two research papers, I'd spent months pulling all-nighters in the lab. I'd ended up in the emergency room twice with stomach bleeding, and even the doctor warned me that if I kept pushing myself like that, I could end up dead.

Ian, on the other hand, was living off the financial support Dad gave him. Most days, he did nothing but sleep and play video games with his roommates. He barely scraped through his final exams.

And now, the results I'd nearly killed myself to achieve were being handed to him—someone who had done nothing to earn them—with a casual excuse about "avoiding favoritism".

"I object."

I looked straight at Dad.

"This fellowship is supposed to be based on academic performance and research achievements, not on who has the saddest story.

"If you think Ian is qualified, fine. Then I want his full academic record reviewed here, in front of everyone."

Dad's expression darkened instantly.

"Karl! Are you questioning the college's decision?"

"You're the one I'm questioning!" I shot back, my eyes burning as I stared him down. "You say you're avoiding favoritism. What you're really avoiding is being accused of using your position to benefit your own family.

"I have the highest GPA in the entire college. My research has passed every independent review. So, what gives you the right to block me?"

"Enough!"

A sharp voice came from beside me.

My girlfriend of two years, Megan Campbell, stood up and grabbed my wrist.

"Karl," she hissed, her tone full of reproach. "Will you stop making a scene?"

I stared at her in disbelief.

Megan frowned, disappointment written all over her face.

"Prof. Ludwig has always been strict with you precisely because he doesn't want to be biased. And now you're challenging him in front of the entire college? Do you have any idea what you're doing to him?

"And besides, Ian has it so hard. He doesn't even have a decent computer.

"You have everything you need. Even if you apply on your own, you'll still get into a good graduate program. So, what's the big deal about giving Ian this opportunity? Do you really have to be this selfish?"

I froze.

Her fingers were digging painfully into my wrist, but the pain throbbing in my chest was worse.

I looked at the woman I'd loved for two years—the woman I'd once imagined building a future with—and watched her defend another man. Then I looked at my own father, who was staring at me with a warning in his eyes.

So, this was how they saw me.

Everything I'd worked for was worthless. And the better I became, the more they thought I deserved to be sacrificed.

I looked at Megan and slowly pried her fingers from my wrist.

A tear fell onto the back of my hand, leaving a wet spot.

"Fine. Good for you for being so noble."

I picked up the fellowship application from the table and tore it to pieces without hesitation.

With Dad staring at me in shock, I turned around and walked out of the auditorium without looking back.

"No… You can't do this to me, Karl," Dad cried, shaking his head desperately. "No matter what, there was nothing wrong with helping students in need!"I devoted my life to education. I sacrificed my own family so that children who couldn't afford an education would have the chance to go to school!"I snickered and pulled out a file from the folder, tossing it onto the table in front of him. "Frederick, enough with the self-righteous act," I said. "Take a look at this."With trembling hands, Dad opened the file. His eyes widened. It was Ian's actual family background investigation report. "Ian was never actually a student from a disadvantaged background. His aunt, Clara Sullivan, is a senior official in the state education department, and she's in charge of senior personnel appointments at Aldenbury University."You think I didn't know? You've been supporting Ian and showing him preferential treatment for years. You even went so far as to block your own son's graduate fellowsh

Ian and Megan stared at me as if they'd just seen a ghost. Dad's eyes nearly bulged out of his head. "Karl?"He instinctively slipped back into his usual authoritative tone, pointing at me as he shouted, "Have you lost your mind? You think you're allowed to sit there?"Do you even know what kind of meeting this is? You show up dressed like that and think you can come in here pretending to be some big shot?"Get down here right now! Stop embarrassing yourself."I looked at him calmly, not even bothering to raise an eyebrow. Before I could say a word, the two guards standing behind me stepped forward, their expressions turning cold."How dare you?"They grabbed Dad by the shoulders from either side and forced him back into his chair.Zachary looked terrified. "Frederick, have you lost your mind?" he hissed, pointing angrily at Dad. "This is Special Agent Karl Ludwig, sent here by the NSA! He's a senior official from Area 091."You're already in serious trouble for stealing

The scandal at NYSA's final defense spread throughout the entire academic community within hours. Aldenbury University's governing board was furious, and Dad's title as one of Aldenbury's Outstanding Educators of the Year was revoked that very night. Inside the dean's office, Dad's hair was disheveled, and the composure and arrogance he once carried were nowhere to be seen. He was pacing back and forth restlessly. "Prof. Ludwig, the authorities have already formed an investigative team. They're coming to Aldenbury University tomorrow," his assistant said, standing nervously by the door as he delivered the news. "There's nothing to worry about," Dad spat through clenched teeth as he spun around, his eyes bloodshot. "This was all a setup by that ungrateful son of mine!"As long as we find him and prove that he willingly gave Ian the data, I can prove my innocence."Even now, Dad still refused to admit that he'd done anything wrong. He pulled out his phone and called someone h

Three days later, the final defense for the National Young Scientist Award was held at the Aldenbury International Convention Center. The auditorium was packed. The audience included leading scholars from universities across Galdovia, along with senior officials from the state education department. Dad sat in the front row, maintaining his usual composed demeanor as he smiled and accepted compliments from those around him.Onstage, Ian stood before the giant presentation screen, confidently walking the audience through his research with a presentation clicker in hand."In conclusion, this data model not only addresses existing energy-consumption problems, but also provides a new theoretical foundation for future cutting-edge research. That concludes my defense. Thank you, members of the panel."He gave a slight bow, and the room erupted in applause. However, the lead expert from Jovendel, who was sitting at the center of the panel, didn't clap. He adjusted his glasses and star

"Useless! Both of you are absolutely useless!"Dad's furious voice boomed through the dean's office. Ian was practically in tears, while Megan stood there with her head lowered, not daring to say a word. "You've been working on this for three whole nights, and you still can't solve a problem this simple? What the hell have you two been doing?"Dad was shaking with rage. The position of vice president was practically within his reach, and he couldn't afford to let anything go wrong now."Prof. Ludwig, this isn't a simple problem," Megan finally gritted out. "Karl… He held something back when he left. "The data he gave us is missing the most critical part of the algorithm. If we can't find him and recover the missing code before the defense the day after tomorrow, we'll be humiliated in front of the entire panel."Dad froze for a moment, then anger flared in his eyes. "I knew that bastard wouldn't be that generous!" he seethed. "He deliberately left us with this mess just so

For the next two weeks, Aldenbury University seemed to settle back into its usual routine after the controversy. Meanwhile, Ian had taken the data I'd left behind and, with Megan's help, pieced together a research paper. The moment the paper was published within the department, it caused an uproar. The sophistication of its data model and the depth of its theoretical analysis were far beyond what anyone would expect from an undergraduate. Almost overnight, Ian was put on a pedestal and hailed throughout the department as a young genius. Megan posted a photo of Ian from behind, standing in the lab. Her caption read, "True talent always finds a way to shine. Without the pressure and intimidation from those who abused their power, you've finally had the chance to show the world what you're capable of."The comments were filled with praise for Ian and people taking shots at me. "So, Karl's SCI papers were only good because he was riding on Ian's work?""Exactly. Karl leaves,
