My mind was filled with paranoia as I listened closely for any sound in the eerie silence that filled the summer night sky. It was the type that made breathing loud to the ears, one I wasn't accustomed to. The ever present chirping crickets in the slums whenever darkness sets in had gradually became a norm to me.
And now, two hours away from Willow, in a neighborhood filled with gigantic Villas, I stood alone, crouched under a tree."Now." Max's voice reached me through the earpiece plugged into my left ear. He is one of Fox's men and my partner for this operation. Being a hacker came in handy when breaking into the heavily guarded house."Right."Snapping on my black leather gloves with my duffel back secured tightly over my back, I drew the hood to my hoodie over my face and ran upto the fence at the back of the mansion in front of me, taking cover under the trees. The electric fence currently disenabled was easier to climb up here than the solid smooth walls of the side fence.Securing one foot above the other, I hauled myself to the top, avoiding the barbs, and managed to breach the fence with only a few cuts in my palms."All cleared. Head straight to the building."I darted towards the building looming ahead and went around for the screened patio at the back.I was much at ease now with the fear of setting off the alarms gone. Covering the glass in duct tape, I grabbed a chair by the pool and smashed it on the glass. The tape had lessened the sound of glass shattering, which had been my aim.According to my resources, the owner and his family were on vacation when the item was shipped in, hence the lack of security in the house rendering it empty, still, I prefer working as silently as possible."Breaking in. Checked.""Good. Search for the Master bedroom. That's the stone's location." Max directed.I was more on the alert inside the house than outside. If anyone happened to be around, the noise will draw their attention.Starting with the main floor, I picked lock after lock on each bedroom door I came across, hoping to find the master bedroom, where the gemstone is said to be kept."Can't you check the system and tell me where the room is?" I asked, but no reply came."Damnit."My guess would have been the study because why not? A safe is where people usually keep important stuff like those. And I doubts there's one in a bedroom. But my informer was sure it was in the master bedroom, which they had failed to pinpoint. It would have made my work more straightforward and less likely for me to be caught. So I carried on my fruitless search. The amount of expensive items littering the house is enough to tempt any law-abiding citizen to commit crime, and they were all displayed in plain sight. If only I could grab an item or two, I would have enough money to pay off Fox and move out of Willow. But I knew things wouldn't be as easy as that. Thus, I focused on my target, which I came across after the third room on the second floor.Using the small flashlight to navigate the dark room, I first headed straight for the walk-in closet. The double doors caught my eyes the moment I stepped in with their glamorous design. If the gemstone were anywhere in this room, it was bound to be the closet– that was locked with a password."Great."I cursed under my breath, punching in random digits until I was asked to try again later. A minor panic seized me, expecting some strange alarm to start blaring at my stupidity. When nothing happened, I realized it was only barring me from messing with the pads again.I turned my attention to the next place, the bedside drawers. I would have asked Max for help and see if he could crack the code, but he haven't been replying me over three minutes ago.So I looked around, but apart from the socks and packets of condoms, the drawers were bare. I threw the offending items in the air out of anger and watched them fall on the bed and around.I eyed the closet again, supporting my back against the bed as I slid down to the floor amidst the mess, wrecking my brain of any numbers that could serve as the owner's password. I flashed the light randomly around the room, looking for other places the box could fit when the lights shone on a card discarded on the ground. It was a random card, and I had no idea what to expect when I crawled under the desk by the balcony door to inspect it.I might be petite, but even I couldn't fit under a sturdy table without effort, which resulted in a flower vase on the top toppling to the ground."Shit." I hissed, startled by the loud noise. I was only lucky the house was empty. All that trouble for a stupid business card with Andrew De Loughrey written in bold with gold ink.Well, what did I expect, to find a card containing his password lying on the ground?I snorted, turning to leave until I spotted a drawer hidden under the desk. It was locked, but that didn't stop anyone. It certainly didn't stop me.Inside the small confinement was a black diary... And a wooden box, just as I remembered from the photo. I nearly cried in joy.I might have journeyed for hours to come here, preparing for the worse, but finding the stone and returning successfully seemed almost impossible. But luck was on my side."I take it you found the gemstone, yes?" Max's voice startled me again."Yes. Where have you been?""None of your business. Haul you ass out and over now. The job is done."Cradling the box in one hand, I moved around the table, glancing through the glass balcony doors, I froze. Then blinked again."Something just moved in the garden. Did your cameras caught anything?""No, there's nothing here. The house is empty. But if you stayed any longer, I'm leaving."Dismissing the shadows moving through the trees as trick of light, I hurried out of the room. I ran back the way I come from, without even putting away the gemstone in my bag.I was on the first floor, almost at the broken glass door when I heard voices."Surround the house and leave no entrance unchecked. Whoever the intruder is, we can't let them escape." A person, mostly a guard ordered examining the broken door.I duck behind a table as more shadows ran passed outside the windows, flashing lights inside the house."Shit! shit! shit!""Are you out yet?""Dafuk? I'm surrounded! Why the hell didn't you tel-""Over here! Something just moved inside.""Shit! I'm fucked."___I crawled out from the table and ran back the way I came from. But instead of going upstairs, I took a sharp corner round a dark hallway on the first floor. The damn house was like a maze."Max! You have the floor plans, tell me all the escape routes on the first floor.""You think they haven't secured all of those exits?""What the hell do you want me to do then? Wait here until I'm caught.""Whatever. If you're caught, you're on your own."The line went silent and I cussed again. Now I'm on my own.It was too dark, and I couldn't use my flashlight unless I wanted to get caught, so I felt around the wall as I run further down the hallway. It was so long and mazy that I have been running for a good five minutes without coming to it's end. At first, there were few doors and windows illuminating the pathway, but for the past two minutes, I haven't come across a single door nor window. Just dark walls leading farther down to god knows wher-Omph!The wall suddenly shifted and I stumbled o
Lena ran through the dark alleys of Willow, the slums, clutching the gemstone in her hand. She had managed to make it out alive from the security guards and the maniac."I made it!" Lara wheezed.Apart from the bruises and cuts on her body, she was unscathed. She had done it. She had pulled off the heist of the century.Without further ado, she headed straight to Fox's base. She knew he would be waiting for her, eager to see the prize she had risked her life for. She hoped he would reward her well, maybe even cut off all her five years of service. But was just wishful thinking.Lena reached the door of the base, a rundown warehouse that looked like any other in Willow. She knocked three times, then twice, then once, the secret code that only Fox's trusted members knew. The door opened and she stepped inside."You're back." The guard grunted and led her to Fox's den.The base was dimly lit and filled with smoke and noise. Lena saw several of Fox's men lounging around, playing cards, dri
Lena smiled as she wiped the counter of Drew's Diner, humming a tune that she had heard on the radio. She loved working here, not only because it paid her bills, but also because it gave her a chance to interact with different people and make friends. The diner was one of the few places in the slums that felt warm and welcoming, with its bright lights and colorful posters, its cozy booths and stools, its delicious smells and sounds. It was a contrast to the rest of the slums, which were dark and dreary, with its flickering neon signs and graffiti walls, its crowded alleys and sidewalks, its harsh noises and odors. Her only friends was Laurel, a bubbly blonde who worked as a waitress with her. Laurel was always gossiping about the latest news and drama in the slums, especially about her crushes."Did you see that guy who came in today?" Laurel asked Lena, as they took a break in the back room. The back room was small and cluttered, with a fridge and a microwave, a sink and a cupboard, a
Lena wiped her mouth with a napkin and smiled at her siblings, ignoring the gunshots that were fired 30 minutes ago. In the slums, everything is possible. They had just finished a simple but satisfying dinner of bread, cheese and soup. She was glad they could enjoy a meal together, even if it was in their cramped and shabby apartment."Thanks for cooking, Lena. You're the best," said Manny."No problem, kiddo. You helped me a lot with the dishes," Lena said, ruffling her hair."What about me?" asked Sam, a little shy."You were a great taste tester, Sam. You made sure the soup was not too salty or too bland," Lena said, tickling him.Sam giggled and hugged Lena. "I love you, sis.""I love you too, Sam. And you too, Samantha," Lena said, embracing them both. They stayed like that for a while, feeling the warmth and comfort of each other. Lena wished they could always be happy and safe, but she knew that was not possible in their harsh world. They had no parents, no money, no friends. Th
Lena knew she was in trouble when she saw the man’s face. He was tall, dark and handsome, with piercing magenta eyes and a scar that ran across his left brow. Scar wore a tailored suit that hugged his muscular frame, and a gold watch that sparkled on his wrist. He looked like someone who had money, power and influence. And he looked furious. He stared at her with a cold, hard gaze, as if he wanted to burn a hole through her skull. He glanced around the room one more time and crossed his arms over his chest.“Ready to leave?" He asked in a deep, commanding voice.Lena swallowed hard. She tried to look defiant, but she felt like a mouse in front of a lion.“No,” she said.“No?”“I mean, yes.”He raised an eyebrow.“I don't see your bags packed.”“You didn't tell me we were leaving today!”He shook his head.“Do I need to spell everything to you?”Lena bit her lip. She knew he was right. She decided to try one last thing. Maybe she could appeal to his sense of pity, or at least his sense
Lena couldn’t believe her eyes as she followed Scar out of the airport. He had paid off all of her debt and accumulated interest with a single swipe of his credit card, without even blinking an eye. She had no idea how much money he had, but it must have been a fortune. She felt a surge of gratitude and admiration for him, mixed with curiosity and confusion. Who was he, really? And why did he want her to work for him when he has so much money already? She expected him to hail a taxi or rent a car, but instead he led them to a sleek black limousine that was waiting for them at the curb. A uniformed driver opened the door and greeted Scar with a respectful bow.“Welcome back, sir. I hope you had a pleasant flight.”“Thank you, James. It was fine. This is Len and these are his siblings, Sam and Manny. They will be staying with me for a while.”“Of course, sir. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Me Len and young masters.” The driver smiled warmly at them and helped them load their luggage into
Lena blinked, surprised by his offer."Your bodyguard?" she repeated.Scar nodded."Yes, my bodyguard. You see, I have many enemies in this city and beyond. Raiders, rebels, rival gangs, you name it. They all want a piece of me or my territory. And they will stop at nothing to get it."He paused, looking at her intently."That's why I need someone who can protect me at all times. Someone who is loyal, brave, and skilled in combat. Someone like you."He reached out and touched her hand gently."Will you do it?" he asked softly.Lena felt a jolt of electricity run through her body at his touch. She quickly pulled her hand away, feeling flustered. She looked at him warily, wondering what he was up to. Was this some kind of trap? Was he trying to seduce her or manipulate her? Or did he really trust her enough to make her his bodyguard? She decided to play along for now, until she could figure out his true intentions."Sure," she said hesitantly. "I'll do it."Scar smiled brightly, clapping
Blood dripped from Lena's wounds, staining the dirt beneath her feet. She clenched her teeth, ignoring the searing pain that coursed through her veins. Standing tall and proud, she faced her opponents with a fierce glare. She had fought hard and long, enduring countless blows and strikes. She had surprised everyone with her resilience and courage, especially Scar and Hermes. They had underestimated her, judging her by her small and petite frame. But she had proven them wrong, showing them the fire that burned in her soul. She was a tigress, Scar had even given her the nickname "little tiger" at some point.Sage, a veteran fighter who had trained many warriors, watched Lena with awe and contempt. She had never seen anyone like him, someone who could endure so much and still keep fighting. She usually subdue her opponents with a blow, but not him. Despite his small frame and statue, he is brave and fast. Sage walked towards Lena, wiping the sweat off her forehead, and gave her a relucta
