Chapter 3

Author: Skytree
"This necklace suits you best," Jack said, clipping it around my neck. "Had to win it at the auction. You like it?"

He didn't even pause for my reaction.

"Got us a gondola for sunrise,” he added, still smiling. “7th anniversary. Just you, me, and the view."

***

Jack kept chatting the whole ride.

"Once this project's done, let's hit the islands. We'll try for a pup, start the nursery."

Right then, his phone buzzed. He checked the screen, froze.

I saw the shift in his face. I knew that look.

"It's fine," I said. "Go. I'll wait at the summit."

He didn't explain. Didn't need to.

At the mountaintop restaurant, champagne and desserts were already waiting. Fancy. Perfect. Hollow.

I pulled out my phone, bored. Opened social. There it was—Rose's latest post.

Photo: the Chief Healer medal, a tower of desserts, and a ridiculous bouquet of roses.

Caption: [I wouldn't be where I am today without your care and love. I'm so happy.]

The comments were blowing up.

[So envious!]

[Your mate treats you like royalty!]

[Beauty, brains, and love—you've got it all!]

But my gaze locked on a detail most missed.

A hand in the frame. His hand.

The ring on it? Same one I was wearing.

Jack's.

I called him.

"Calling Jack this late?" Rose answered, voice dripping sugar.

She laughed. "Give it up. He's with me tonight, celebrating. He's not coming back. Guess you just weren't enough to keep your mate. Pathetic."

"You're a mated wolf whoring after someone else's mate," I bit out, then slammed the call shut.

The stars were fading. Dawn stretched over the horizon.

I turned to the server. "Start the tram."

"Just you, ma'am?"

"Yeah. Just me."

The gondola rose, cutting through clouds.

Inside, the lights glowed soft over crisp white linen. Champagne chilled. Candles flickered.

Only the wind kept me company.

But his voice haunted the silence—

'Wyettta, I'll make you happy.'

'I'll protect you forever.'

'You're my one and only.'

Lies.

Every word, every touch—just part of the act.

Right before sunrise, I tried calling him one last time.

His phone was off.

I uploaded everything—my formula logs, test footage, voice memos. Set it to auto-drop on the pack network.

When it was done, I unlocked the gondola's safety latch.

Blocked the mind-link. Drank the witch's potion to sever the mate bond.

Closed my eyes.

And jumped—into a thousand-meter freefall, just as dawn cracked the sky.

***

Elsewhere.

Rose curled into Jack, eyes smoldering.

"I need to go," he muttered. "It's my anniversary with Wyettta. I promised her the sunrise."

Rose slid her arms around his waist. "Don't go. Stay with me."

Jack pulled back, jaw tight. "Not today."

The door burst open.

Tony, his lab assistant, stood there, pale and breathless. "Prof. Sterling—it's Wyettta. She jumped. Off the aerial tram."

Rose's words yanked me back to reality."Jack," I said, voice low, "pretend I really did die. It's the only way we both move on.""No, Wyettta," he pleaded. "Hit me. Curse me. Hate me—but don't vanish again. Please... come back with me.""We were a mistake from the start," I said, fury burning in my chest. "I was never the one you wanted. I won't be anyone's backup plan.""It's my fault. I was blind. Losing you—it showed me. You were the only one who ever mattered.""I want you dead, Wyettta!"Rose broke free—snatched a shard of glass and charged.I didn't even have time to move.Jack leapt between us.The glass sank straight into his lower back."She's with another wolf and you still protect her?" Rose screamed.Mr. Zane and the guards slammed her down."Enough," Jack growled. "I don't want to hear another word from you."Rose blinked like she'd been slapped. Then snapped all over again."No! You love me! You're SUPPOSED to love me!"Mr. Zane just gave the order. She wa

Mr. Zane stormed in just in time. "Restrain that mad wolf."Guards stepped forward, swift and practiced. Rose didn't stand a chance."Well, well," she spat. "Already cozying up to another wolf? Told Jack ages ago—you never cared. Not worth his heartbreak. Look at you now—got someone new rushing in to save you. Filthy pair.""Watch your mouth," Mr. Zane said coolly. "This is a school."Rose sneered. "And who the hell are you to her? Whatever I do—it's none of your business."I didn't take the bait. I knelt beside Kyrie."Kyrie, it's okay. I'm here. It's over.""Over?" Rose laughed, bitter and broken. "It's never over. I'll never let you live in peace!"Her voice scraped the air—unhinged. Then—more footsteps. Fast, desperate."Wyettta! You're alive!"Jack's voice cracked through the chaos. Breathless. Raw."You're really alive... thank the Moon Goddess."He stood frozen in the doorway, eyes red, staring like he was afraid I'd vanish all over again.Rose flipped, tears spill

"Shut up! I'm gonna kill you!" Rose lunged, pure fury in motion."You think becoming Chief Healer means you've won? Dream on!" she snarled. "You don't get to walk away clean. I'm gonna rip it all away—like you did to me!"Her eyes blazed red. Fangs out. Claws swinging like she'd already lost control."You can hate me all you want," I said, voice cool. "But don't you dare scare my students."I stepped forward."Let's take this outside.""Outside?" she laughed, bitter and cracked. "You think you can tell me what to do? I lost everything—my healer title, my mate rejected me, my parents cast me out—and even Jack..."She clutched her chest like it physically hurt, then shot me a look full of poison."You really think that means you've won?"No warning. She grabbed a pair of scissors off the floor and lunged.A few girls screamed. Chaos cracked through the room."If you're here to cause trouble, stop now, or you'll regret it," I warned, pulling the students behind me. "This is a s

One day, I spotted a report saying Jack had quit his job as a med professor and was retreating into the mountains. The photo hit weird—he looked empty, staring into the same woods I'd jumped from. Like something hollowed him out and left nothing behind."What's the point of all this?"No mockery in my voice. No gloating. Just... quiet.Once, he tied himself to me and called it love. Now that I was gone, he should've been free. He should've moved on."Sorry I'm late, Teacher."Kyrie's voice pulled me back. He tapped my shoulder lightly."What held you up?""My uncle was submitting a recommendation letter. Took longer than planned."Mr. Zane, standing next to him, handed me a glossy brochure—Healer's Symposium invite."I'm not going," I said, flat. No hesitation."You love healing, don't you? If you really wanna help more wolves, you need that Chief Healer title. Don't let your past bury your worth.""I..."That night, I finally signed the application.I threw myself into
