Chapter 2

Autor: Hunk Alert
In my previous life, when everyone else treated me like a lunatic, only Lindsey showed signs of pondering after hearing me out.

She had said, "Human stamina has limits. Fletcher's condition really doesn't line up with the norm."

Although she never helped me in the end, that tiny bit of suspicion became my only hope.

Early the next morning, I dragged my still-exhausted body to the training field and found Lindsey supervising drills. "Ms. Quinn, I have an important situation to report!"

She turned around. The moment she saw me, her brows furrowed a little. "You again? Have you recovered already?"

"Ma'am, I'm not here to ask for medical leave."

I took a deep breath and looked into her sharp eyes. "I'm here to report an extremely abnormal situation involving Fletcher Stone."

This time, I changed my approach and carefully explained the strange changes in my physical condition, along with Fletcher's completely inhuman endurance during the orientation.

"Ma'am, you're a professional soldier. You should know better than anyone that an ordinary college freshman with no formal training background shouldn't, by any logic, be able to complete a 30-mile run under load without even panting once.

"It's simply, scientifically impossible."

Lindsey listened in silence, her eyes filled with scrutiny.

"I suspect something's fishy going on," I continued, "but everyone thinks I'm just jealous of him. I need to verify a theory. As such, I'd like to request special approval through the faculty for a temporary one-week leave of absence."

She stared at me for a full minute, as if weighing every word to see whether I was lying.

Finally, she replied in a low voice, "Sounds ridiculous, but your condition does look genuinely bad. It doesn't seem fake. I can speak to the faculty for you, but you only get three days.

"If your theory turns out to be nonsense, you'll report back and resume the orientation immediately."

"Thank you, ma'am!"

Relief surged through me. This was the first step to a successful plan.

That same afternoon, I finished all the paperwork, dragged my suitcase off campus, and headed straight home. I wanted to see whether my condition would improve if I physically distanced myself from Fletcher.

The moment I got home, I practically collapsed onto my bed.

Mom and Dad were terrified when they saw how pale I looked. They immediately started making soup and getting me to eat more to replenish my energy.

I could feel that familiar exhaustion tearing through my body. My heart sank deeper. It didn't work.

Even after I left campus and stayed away from Fletcher, that all-consuming fatigue still clung to me like a parasite burrowed into my bones. As it turned out, distance wasn't the answer.

That night, I tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep, when my phone suddenly buzzed nonstop. It was my high school alumni group chat. A few people there had ended up attending the same college as me.

"Dude. You guys have no idea how insane our campus heartthrob, Fletcher Stone, is. We've only been in freshman orientation for a week, and everybody's already tanned beyond recognition.

"His skin, on the other hand, remains perfect—not even a shade darker. It's surreal!"

"That's not all. His stamina's the real monster. This afternoon, he ran a full 30-mile armed cross-country course for our entire class. When he finished, he looked like he had just come back from a casual walk.

"Wasn't he just an ordinary guy back in high school?"

Another classmate replied, "Right? I remember him being skinny with bad skin, totally average in high school—super forgettable. How did one summer break turn him into a completely different person?"

"Speaking of that, do you guys remember Simon Holt? The guy who used to be the king of the school in Fletcher's class? I saw him at the mall a couple of days ago.

"Holy crap, I'm telling you, he's fat and shabby now. His skin's so terrible that I barely recognized him. Honestly? He's nothing like his high-school self."

The moment I read that, I shot upright in bed. Still, the feeling of my body falling apart slammed into me again, forcing me back onto the mattress. A mouthful of blood spilled from my lips.

No. I had to figure out a way to break this as soon as possible.

Fletcher and Simon… A terrifying thought sprouted in my mind.

Fletcher used to be average in high school, but now, he had become the campus heartthrob. Meanwhile, Simon, the former king of the school, had turned overweight and haggard.

There was no way that many coincidences could exist in the world.

  • Stolen Fatigue: I Die in His Place   Chapter 7

"This kind of sorcery allows the user, through specific ceremonies and mediums, to transfer their own negative conditions onto a chosen target, with things like fatigue, illness, mediocrity, and even unattractiveness."At the same time, they steal the target's positive qualities—their energy, health, vitality, and appearance, all for their own use."I pointed at Fletcher, who was still sprawled on the ground. "Simon Holt, one of his high school classmates, was his first test subject! He stole Simon's looks and health to complete his first transformation!"Then, I pointed at myself. "And I was his second target. He used the same method to dump the entire burden of orientation fatigue onto me, leaving me barely alive while he enjoyed everyone's admiration and worship."My words hit like an atomic bomb."Oh my goodness. Is this actually real? I'm having goosebumps!""Keeping a familiar? How could he involve others in such witchcraft?""No wonder he changed so much over the summer.

The following day was the highly anticipated campus-wide loaded cross-country race. To maximize publicity, they had even invited a local TV station to broadcast the entire event live. The training field was packed shoulder to shoulder with students, and the atmosphere was electric.Fletcher stood at the starting line. He had clearly gone out of his way to style his hair and wear a brand-new set of athletic gear, looking radiant and full of confidence.Yet, when he saw me standing perfectly fine in the lane beside him, the smile on his face faltered. He said under his breath, "I can't believe you've still got the guts to challenge me. You're asking for a miserable death!"I answered him with a wide grin, "Thanks to you, I feel fantastic."His brows drew together tightly, confusion flashing through his eyes. A second later, he forced himself back into that confident posture."Look at you, still smiling when your doom's right around the corner," he spat coldly before turning away.

Under the watchful eyes of the entire faculty and student body, Fletcher finally gave out less than half a mile from the finish line. His legs buckled, and he collapsed onto the ground in a pathetic heap, unable to get back up.Meanwhile, I crossed the finish line with ease. Slowly, I walked back to him and towered over him. "You lost.""No, I didn't!"He suddenly lifted his head, rage twisting his face as he pointed at me and screamed hysterically, "It's you! You cheated! You used some kind of dark magic! You stole my stamina! Give me back to me, damn it!"His crazed outburst made everyone around us frown. The concept of stealing one's stamina was… bizarre.Back in my previous life, they all wore the same dubious looks when I spoke about the fatigue transfer, too. Now, the tables had turned.Lindsey strode over, her expression stern as she fixed Fletcher with a hard stare. "Cadet Stone, explain yourself. Why has your physical condition changed so drastically overnight?"Under n

The next day, I received a call from Lindsey. "Dorian, something happened to Fletcher!"Her voice sounded unusually grave. "This afternoon, he was covering the final conditioning drill for the entire class. He hadn't even made it to 300 feet before he suddenly collapsed from exhaustion."He was so pale that he couldn't even stand up. Because of him, the closing ceremony has been postponed, and everybody's training load just got doubled. The whole campus is tearing into him right now."He somehow got hold of my number and asked me to pass along a message. He wants to know exactly what you did to him."My lips curled into a cold smirk. "In that case, please tell him this for me—I did what you did to me, bastard!"There was a stunned silence on the other end of the line. Lindsey was clearly caught off guard by my answer. After a long pause, she asked, "So, what does that mean?""Nothing much."I let out a chuckle, feeling my vitality slowly flowing back into my body again. I had ne

Immediately, I dug out my high school yearbook, found Simon's contact information, and dialed his number with trembling hands. The phone rang for a long time before someone finally picked up.A hoarse, tired voice came from the other end. "Hello? Who's this?""Hey, is this Simon Holt? I'm Dorian Newman. We went to the same high school," I said as calmly as I could."Dorian?" He paused for a moment, then continued, "Oh… Yeah, I vaguely remember you. What do you need?"I took a deep breath and got straight to the point."I want to ask you something. Did something happen to your body over the summer? Like, suddenly feeling exhausted all the time for no reason and… experiencing major changes in your appearance?"The line instantly fell into dead silence. A full 30 seconds passed before Simon finally spoke again. This time, his voice carried a faint tremor. "H-How did you know that?"My heart sank. It was just as I thought."Because I'm going through the exact thing right now."I t
