Chapter 5

작가: Saucy
“Things are already where they are,” he said. “My advice? Don’t make this ugly. I’ll give you four million dollars as compensation, and on top of that—”

He leaned forward in his chair.

“Before I smashed the computer, I wiped the hard drive. If you try anything, I’ve got plenty of ways to make sure you never work in online publishing again.”

I stared at him for several long seconds.

Like I was looking at a complete stranger.

I didn’t argue. I didn’t make a scene.

I just turned around and walked out.

When I got back to the Bennett house, the living room was lively.

Ethan’s parents were sitting on the couch, holding Chloe’s hand and smiling so hard the lines around their faces deepened.

“Our family is honored to have such an accomplished daughter-in-law.”

Chloe looked up and saw me. Panic flashed through her eyes for a split second, but she quickly put that sweet smile back on.

I gave a small nod—enough to count as a greeting—and went straight upstairs.

The broken pieces of the computer were still spread across my desk.

Ethan had given me that computer.

He’d said that since I spent all day staring at a screen and typing, using something from him would make me think of him more often.

I stood there looking at the spiderweb cracks on the shattered monitor for a long time.

Whatever was left in my heart finally went cold.

The door opened.

Chloe leaned against the frame, smiling with open arrogance.

“Ethan told me everything. So what if you two knew each other before? In the end, he still chose me.

He said only someone like me is fit to be Mrs. Pierce. You’ll never belong in that world.”

I couldn’t even be bothered to look at her.

I stuffed all the broken computer parts into a backpack.

As I passed her, I stopped for half a second.

“That world of yours? I don’t want it.”

When I got to Summer’s studio, Ivy Lindsay was there too.

The same award-winning actress who’d lent me that couture gown.

She’d starred in the first adaptation of one of my novels, back when she wasn’t famous yet. That show had made her an overnight sensation.

After that, I’d named her as my first choice for every adaptation, and step by step, I’d helped push her into the top tier.

The second she saw me come in, she handed me a hot milk tea.

“Don’t panic. The hacker I found is the best in the business. We’ll get it back.”

Less than half an hour later, the hacker handed over a flash drive.

“The hard drive was only physically damaged. I recovered all the source files.

Every revision history, every timestamp is intact. I even pulled the backed-up cloud chat logs.”

Ivy gripped her phone so hard she looked ready to crack it.

“I’m posting right now. One statement from me and my followers will bury her alive.”

I shook my head.

“No rush. Let her win the gold award first. I want the truth to come out while she’s standing on the stage.”

Ivy paused for a beat, then smiled.

“Confident in your work, huh?”

Beside her, Summer lifted a brow.

“Of course she is. She’s Midnight Lantern.”

A week later, the Aurora Prize announced its gold award winner:

Chloe Bennett.

The internet exploded.

But the day of the award ceremony was also the day I was supposed to report to the European Institute of Letters.

After packing my luggage, I told Summer, “You go to the ceremony. I’ll post the evidence from Midnight Lantern’s account. We do it at the same time.”

On the day of the ceremony, I was sitting at the airport waiting to board, watching the livestream on my phone.

Onscreen, Chloe stood at the podium in a diamond-studded couture gown, holding the gold trophy and crying delicately for the cameras.

“Darkwater was something I poured three years of my life into, one word at a time. Thank you, everyone...”

The next second, Summer stood up in the audience holding a flash drive.

“I’d like to report plagiarism. Chloe Bennett’s submission, Darkwater, was stolen from another writer.”

I watched the livestream on my screen.

My thumb opened the post I’d drafted in advance. Attached were the source files, timestamps, revision records, and every screenshot of the conversations Ethan and I had once had while discussing the outline for Darkwater.

The caption was only five words:

I am Midnight Lantern.

Post.

The second I hit send, the airport announcement came on overhead.

“Flight ZR3287 to Paris is now boarding. Passengers, please proceed to Gate 3.”

I stood up and picked up my bag.

My phone started vibrating like crazy in my pocket.

Caller ID:

Ethan Pierce.

“Ethan.”“Yeah.”“I’m never getting married.”“Yeah.”“And especially not to you.”He closed his hand around the ring and smiled a little. His eyes were damp, but he didn’t cry.“I figured.”Then he stepped back and cleared the way.“Go on. Be safe.”I walked past him, and my steps felt much lighter than I’d expected. The wind blew my hair across my face, and I lifted a hand to brush it away.By the time I was far down the street, I still hadn’t looked back. But I knew he was standing there. And I never heard footsteps following me.Back at my apartment, I stood on the balcony and let the wind hit my face. The lights on the tower came on layer by layer. My phone buzzed. It was a message from Summer.[What do you want to eat tomorrow? I’ll bring something.]I replied:[Anything’s fine.]The Paris night wind slipped down the collar of my coat, and I pulled it tighter around myself. The tip of the tower gleamed against the dark blue sky like a fallen star.Leaning against the railing, I t

Summer and Ivy were seated one row behind me, gripping each other’s hands so tightly they looked even more nervous than I was.Onstage, the presenter said a long string of words in Swedish.I didn’t understand most of it.But I heard my name. When I stood, the hem of my gown brushed against the chair. I took a deep breath. My palms were slick with sweat. The walk to the stage felt endless. The camera flashes were so bright I could barely keep my eyes open.I stopped in front of the microphone. The room quieted.Hundreds of eyes were on me.My social anxiety had never really gone away.My heart was pounding so hard it made my chest ache. But I spoke anyway.“This book is called Darkwater.”My voice carried through the microphone with the slightest tremor.“It means a river flowing quietly underground. You can’t see it, but it never stops moving.”The hall stayed silent.“When I wrote it, I had no family and no one beside me. Just a computer.”No one moved.“I want to say this to everyon

The official Nobel Prize in Literature longlist had been released.Darkwater was on it.I stared at the English text on the screen for a long time. The library was quiet, filled only with the soft rustle of turning pages and the low hum of a copier somewhere in the distance.I stood up and walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows.Outside, Paris was blanketed in gray. The clouds hung heavy, but light still managed to break through.I thought of that dawn three years ago.The kitchen in my rental apartment had been leaking, dripping all night long. I’d been huddled in a chair in my winter coat, typing out the words Chapter One one character at a time.Ethan had messaged me on Whatsapp and told me he wanted to be the first person to read it when it was done. The corner of my mouth lifted.I didn’t let myself cry.My phone buzzed.Summer had sent over twenty screaming emojis, with one message buried in the middle:[DO YOU FREAKING SEE THIS]I replied:[Yeah.]She immediately called. “Nina, I—”“Go home.”I stepped around him and headed for the building entrance. As I passed him, I paused for a second.“Ethan, you never loved me. You loved Midnight Lantern—the version of me on the other side of a screen, the one who could make you laugh. The one who built you dreams at a keyboard.“You couldn’t even be bothered to really see what I was like in real life.”I didn’t wait for his answer. I swiped my key card and went inside. As the door shut behind me, I heard a quiet “I’m sorry” from outside.I went upstairs and looked out the window once.Ethan was still standing under that plane tree, head lowered, shoulders slightly slumped.I pulled the curtains closed.7He came back the next day. This time with a bouquet of red roses, left on the ground outside the building.I saw them when I went downstairs.I walked right past.On the third day, it was white roses, with a card that said "I’m sorry."I bent down, picked up the card, folded it in half, then folded it again and

“They let her steal for five years without catching it? The web fiction world must be blind.”“She once got asked in an interview who wrote One Hundred Years of Solitude and couldn’t answer. I should’ve known.”“I feel so bad for Midnight Lantern. Her work got stolen and she got hit on top of it.”Summer sent another message.[Every single one of Chloe’s partners has terminated their contracts. The penalties alone add up to over eleven million dollars. She can’t pay it.]Then Ivy sent a voice note in the group chat.“Her platform is suing her for fraud, and several production companies have filed a joint lawsuit too. Conservatively? Add another million. The pre-sold screen rights on those earlier books of hers are dead. Investors want their money back.”6I replied with a simple [Mm.]Summer wrote back:[You’re not happy?]I replied:[I am. Just not as happy as I thought I’d be.]She sent a question mark.I thought for a moment, then added:[Maybe because there’s nothing left in me for

5I stood in front of the airport’s floor-to-ceiling windows, staring at the patch of sky where my plane had just disappeared. My phone buzzed in my pocket for the thirty-fourth time.Ethan’s name glowed on the screen.I powered it off.Overhead, announcements alternated between French and English as I moved with the crowd toward the exit. The air in Paris was cooler than back home, carrying the mixed scent of fresh bread and coffee.I flagged down a cab and, in halting English, gave the driver the name of the hotel near the school. He was a heavyset middle-aged man who asked, in thickly accented English, whether I was here to study.I said yes.He smiled and said, “Bienvenue.”Welcome.I leaned against the window and watched streets and buildings I’d never seen before slide past me like scenes from a foreign film. After checking into the hotel, I lay on the bed and stared at the ceiling for a long time.My phone was completely quiet. No one was looking for me.I turned over and slept
