Chapter 4

작가: Saucy
“They found the Bennett family’s real daughter, huh? She’s gorgeous. Very ice-queen.”

The tips of my ears burned.

My old social anxiety nearly kicked in on the spot. I had to grip my skirt tight just to keep myself together. Still, I kept my face composed and walked in with a cool, calm expression.

Chloe immediately came over and linked her arm through mine, smiling like we were the closest sisters in the world.

“There you are, Nina. Let me introduce you to a few senior members from the literary association. It’ll help when you join later—people will look out for you.”

She guided me over to several men in suits, then softened her voice into something sugary and sweet.

“My sister writes a little on online platforms, but she’s still pretty unknown. I hope you’ll all take care of her in the future.”

A few of the board members looked me up and down, then curled their lips in faintly mocking smiles.

“Getting into the association takes real talent. A pretty face won’t do it.”

“Exactly. You can’t scribble a few lines and expect to get in. The bar isn’t that low.”

My fingertips tapped idly against the side of my glass.

I didn’t answer.

As they kept talking, the conversation shifted to the upcoming association president election.

Director Zanichelli sighed. “Chloe, your competitor’s Crossing the River has been dominating the charts for nearly a month. If you don’t come out with something new soon, that presidency may slip away.”

Chloe said nothing, but a girl beside her jumped in for her.

“Chloe’s planning to enter the Aurora Prize. If she wins gold, what does she have to worry about?”

Several board members shook their heads.

“That contest is brutal. Midnight Lantern is the only French-language writer who’s ever won gold. Most people can’t even make the shortlist.”

“We’ve invited Midnight Lantern to join the association more than once, and they’ve ignored us every time. Mysterious as hell. No one even knows if they’re a man or a woman.”

Listening to them made me sleepy.

I told Chloe I was going to the restroom, then turned and found an empty corner to sit down.

I pulled out my phone, opened my writing app, and kept working on the last bit of Darkwater.

At some point, Ethan sat down across from me.

He got straight to the point.

“Give Darkwater to Chloe. She’ll use it for the contest.”

My fingers stopped above the screen.

It felt like someone had closed a fist around my heart.

He knew better than anyone what Darkwater meant to me. I’d spent three years on it. It was the book I meant to take all the way to the Nobel.

When I first mapped out the outline, he’d stayed up with me through three all-nighters in a row, helping me work through the logic chapter by chapter.

The floating comments went insane.

[Here we go! She’s definitely going to use Darkwater as leverage to threaten him!]

[I bet she asks for something outrageous!]

I looked up at him.

My throat was dry, but my voice came out steady.

“No.”

Then I stood up and walked away.

My phone buzzed.

I glanced down.

[Ovest Institute of Letters: Your application has been approved. Please submit your enrollment documents by the 30th of this month.]

I stared at the message for several seconds.

The corner of my mouth moved faintly.

Without sparing Ethan—whose expression had already gone dark—a second glance, I turned and walked out of the ballroom.

That day, I was filling out paperwork at the visa center when a trending alert popped up on my phone:

#Chloe Bennett’s Darkwater Shortlisted for the Aurora Prize, Becoming Another French-Language Author to Break Through After Midnight Lantern#

I shot to my feet.

The documents in my hands scattered across the floor.

I ran out of the building, flagged down a cab, and went straight to the Bennett house.

The second I pushed open my door, I froze.

My computer had been smashed.

The motherboard, hard drive, keyboard—everything had been ripped apart and left in pieces. The monitor was shattered into a spiderweb of cracks, and even the hard drive had been bent.

I stood there shaking.

For the first time, even the floating comments changed tone.

[Okay, this time the male lead really went too far... He destroyed her computer for Chloe.]

[I’ve been dragging the villainess this whole time, but now I kind of feel bad for her.]

I pulled out my phone and called Summer, my throat tight.

“My computer’s destroyed. The source files for Darkwater were all on it. Find me the best data recovery expert you can—price doesn’t matter.”

The second I hung up, I grabbed another cab and headed for Starlight Media.

The receptionist tried to stop me. I went around her and kicked open the CEO’s office door.

Ethan was sitting in his leather chair. When he saw me, he actually lifted a brow.

I didn’t waste a word.

I walked up and slapped him across the face.

Crack.

His head snapped to the side. Blood appeared at the corner of his mouth.

“You knew exactly what Darkwater meant to me.”

Ethan wiped the blood from his lip.

Then, unbelievably, he smiled.

His eyes were cold enough to make my skin crawl.

“Ethan.”“Yeah.”“I’m never getting married.”“Yeah.”“And especially not to you.”He closed his hand around the ring and smiled a little. His eyes were damp, but he didn’t cry.“I figured.”Then he stepped back and cleared the way.“Go on. Be safe.”I walked past him, and my steps felt much lighter than I’d expected. The wind blew my hair across my face, and I lifted a hand to brush it away.By the time I was far down the street, I still hadn’t looked back. But I knew he was standing there. And I never heard footsteps following me.Back at my apartment, I stood on the balcony and let the wind hit my face. The lights on the tower came on layer by layer. My phone buzzed. It was a message from Summer.[What do you want to eat tomorrow? I’ll bring something.]I replied:[Anything’s fine.]The Paris night wind slipped down the collar of my coat, and I pulled it tighter around myself. The tip of the tower gleamed against the dark blue sky like a fallen star.Leaning against the railing, I t

Summer and Ivy were seated one row behind me, gripping each other’s hands so tightly they looked even more nervous than I was.Onstage, the presenter said a long string of words in Swedish.I didn’t understand most of it.But I heard my name. When I stood, the hem of my gown brushed against the chair. I took a deep breath. My palms were slick with sweat. The walk to the stage felt endless. The camera flashes were so bright I could barely keep my eyes open.I stopped in front of the microphone. The room quieted.Hundreds of eyes were on me.My social anxiety had never really gone away.My heart was pounding so hard it made my chest ache. But I spoke anyway.“This book is called Darkwater.”My voice carried through the microphone with the slightest tremor.“It means a river flowing quietly underground. You can’t see it, but it never stops moving.”The hall stayed silent.“When I wrote it, I had no family and no one beside me. Just a computer.”No one moved.“I want to say this to everyon

The official Nobel Prize in Literature longlist had been released.Darkwater was on it.I stared at the English text on the screen for a long time. The library was quiet, filled only with the soft rustle of turning pages and the low hum of a copier somewhere in the distance.I stood up and walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows.Outside, Paris was blanketed in gray. The clouds hung heavy, but light still managed to break through.I thought of that dawn three years ago.The kitchen in my rental apartment had been leaking, dripping all night long. I’d been huddled in a chair in my winter coat, typing out the words Chapter One one character at a time.Ethan had messaged me on Whatsapp and told me he wanted to be the first person to read it when it was done. The corner of my mouth lifted.I didn’t let myself cry.My phone buzzed.Summer had sent over twenty screaming emojis, with one message buried in the middle:[DO YOU FREAKING SEE THIS]I replied:[Yeah.]She immediately called. “Nina, I—”“Go home.”I stepped around him and headed for the building entrance. As I passed him, I paused for a second.“Ethan, you never loved me. You loved Midnight Lantern—the version of me on the other side of a screen, the one who could make you laugh. The one who built you dreams at a keyboard.“You couldn’t even be bothered to really see what I was like in real life.”I didn’t wait for his answer. I swiped my key card and went inside. As the door shut behind me, I heard a quiet “I’m sorry” from outside.I went upstairs and looked out the window once.Ethan was still standing under that plane tree, head lowered, shoulders slightly slumped.I pulled the curtains closed.7He came back the next day. This time with a bouquet of red roses, left on the ground outside the building.I saw them when I went downstairs.I walked right past.On the third day, it was white roses, with a card that said "I’m sorry."I bent down, picked up the card, folded it in half, then folded it again and

“They let her steal for five years without catching it? The web fiction world must be blind.”“She once got asked in an interview who wrote One Hundred Years of Solitude and couldn’t answer. I should’ve known.”“I feel so bad for Midnight Lantern. Her work got stolen and she got hit on top of it.”Summer sent another message.[Every single one of Chloe’s partners has terminated their contracts. The penalties alone add up to over eleven million dollars. She can’t pay it.]Then Ivy sent a voice note in the group chat.“Her platform is suing her for fraud, and several production companies have filed a joint lawsuit too. Conservatively? Add another million. The pre-sold screen rights on those earlier books of hers are dead. Investors want their money back.”6I replied with a simple [Mm.]Summer wrote back:[You’re not happy?]I replied:[I am. 5I stood in front of the airport’s floor-to-ceiling windows, staring at the patch of sky where my plane had just disappeared. My phone buzzed in my pocket for the thirty-fourth time.Ethan’s name glowed on the screen.I powered it off.Overhead, announcements alternated between French and English as I moved with the crowd toward the exit. The air in Paris was cooler than back home, carrying the mixed scent of fresh bread and coffee.I flagged down a cab and, in halting English, gave the driver the name of the hotel near the school. He was a heavyset middle-aged man who asked, in thickly accented English, whether I was here to study.I said yes.He smiled and said, “Bienvenue.”Welcome.I leaned against the window and watched streets and buildings I’d never seen before slide past me like scenes from a foreign film. After checking into the hotel, I lay on the bed and stared at the ceiling for a long time.My phone was completely quiet. No one was looking for me.I turned over and slept
