Chapter 1

The second Sloan Patrick saw me, panic flashed in her eyes. She recovered almost instantly, replacing it with a polite, distant smile as she held out her hand.

"Hello, Mr. Davidson. I'm Flynn's fiancee, Sloan Patrick."

Then she turned to Flynn, her voice gentle but firm. "Flynn, don't say that. You and I have been engaged for a long time. You're the only man I'm going to marry."

The comments exploded.

[Here we go! The villain is about to whip out their chat history and make a scene!]

[Fifty cents says he starts crying in the next five seconds!]

I gripped the hem of my shirt, my fingertips ice-cold.

I managed a faint smile at Sloan. My voice was quiet but steady. "Nice to meet you, Ms. Patrick."

The comments froze for several seconds.

[That's it? He's not going to make a scene?]

[He's faking it. Just wait. He's saving the big move for later. Classic playing-hard-to-get routine.]

Sloan clearly hadn't expected that either. She glanced at me, a warning in her eyes beneath the scrutiny.

Flynn tilted his head. His eyes were still red, his voice soft and innocent. "Cullen, are you really giving up the engagement?"

My gaze drifted to the brooch pinned to Sloan's chest. I'd given it to her for our third anniversary. When she'd put it on, she had smiled and promised to wear it to every important occasion from then on.

I looked away. "Yes."

Another wave of comments flooded my vision.

[Keep pretending! Just wait. He'll corner the heroine in private later and cry his eyes out!]

Our mother, Diana Davidson, quickly stood to smooth things over, smiling as she reached for my arm. "All right, that's enough. Let's sit down and eat."

At the dinner table, Mom put a rib on Flynn's plate before turning to me with a smile. "Cullen, you said you have a girlfriend. What does she do? Bring her home sometime so your father and I can meet her."

Every pair of eyes at the table landed on me.

Sloan's fingers tightened around her fork until her knuckles turned white. Her expression had gone tense.

I glanced at her, then lowered my eyes to my plate. "We met online. But I'm planning to break up with her."

The comments immediately went wild.

[See? There it is! He's already taking passive-aggressive shots at her!]

[Just wait. Next, he'll pull out their chat history and play the victim!]

Mom paused with her fork halfway to her mouth. "Why would you break up with her out of nowhere?"

I finished chewing and swallowed before answering quietly, "She got engaged to someone else."

The table fell so silent that the clink of silverware against plates seemed deafening.

Flynn reacted quickly. He put a shrimp on my plate with an elegant smile. "Don't be upset, Cullen. Try this. It's my favorite."

Sloan lifted a hand as though she meant to stop him, then abruptly pulled it back.

I stared at the shrimp on my plate and frowned. "I'm allergic to shrimp."

Flynn's face went pale. His eyes immediately filled with tears. "Cullen, do you dislike me that much?"

Mom's expression darkened too. "Flynn has never served food to anyone before. Don't ruin the moment."

Our father, Mitchell Davidson, set down his fork, impatience creeping into his voice. "How serious can a shrimp allergy be? You'll get used to it if you eat it often enough. Just eat it. Don't embarrass Flynn."

Everyone at the table stared coldly at me, as if I were the one being unreasonable.

Sloan glanced at me, her voice carrying an unmistakable edge of pressure. "A little won't hurt you. We have a private doctor on call."

Then I reached out and took it.Sloan's eyes lit up.A second later, I placed the ring back in her palm. "Sloan.""Yeah?""I'm never getting married."She nodded. "Okay.""Especially not to you."Her fingers closed around the ring. She smiled. Her eyes were damp, but she didn't cry."I figured."She took a step back and moved out of my way. "Go on. Get home safe."I walked past her. My steps felt lighter than I'd expected. The wind blew my hair across my face, and I brushed it aside.Even after I'd gone a long way, I never looked back. But I knew she was still standing there. I never heard footsteps following me.Back at my apartment, I stood on the balcony and let the wind wash over me. The Eiffel Tower lit up section by section. My phone buzzed with a message from Adrian.[What do you want to eat tomorrow? I'll bring something over.]I replied: [Anything's fine.]The Parisian night air slipped beneath the collar of my coat, and I pulled it tighter around myself. The

The suit was charcoal-gray satin, with a silver night-blooming flower embroidered at the waist. It was from the same collection as the one I'd worn to the Davidson party.Adrian and Dominic were sitting one row behind me, gripping each other's hands. Somehow, they looked even more nervous than I felt. The host spoke at length in Swedish. I couldn't understand most of it, but I heard my name. When I stood, the hem of my jacket brushed the chair. I took a deep breath. My palms were drenched in sweat. The walk to the stage felt impossibly long. Camera flashes were so bright I could barely keep my eyes open.I stopped in front of the microphone. The room fell silent. Hundreds of eyes were fixed on me.My social anxiety had never gone away. My heart was pounding so hard my chest ached, but I spoke anyway."This book is called Dark River." My voice carried through the microphone with the slightest tremor. "The title refers to a river flowing quietly underground. You can't see it, but

The official longlist for the Nobel Prize in Literature had been released.Dark River was on it.I stared at the English words on my screen for a long time. The library was quiet, filled only with the rustle of turning pages and the faint hum of a copier somewhere in the distance.I stood and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows.Paris was gray outside. Thick clouds covered the sky, but light still filtered through.I thought back to an early morning three years ago.The kitchen in my rented apartment had a leak that dripped steadily all night. I'd sat hunched in a chair in my winter coat, typing out the first chapter one word at a time.Sloan had messaged me and told me to let her be the first to read it when I was done. The corner of my mouth lifted. I didn't let the tears fall.My phone vibrated.Adrian had sent more than twenty screaming emojis with one message buried among them. [Holy shit, have you seen this?]I replied with a simple "Yeah."Adrian called imme

As I passed her, I stopped."Sloan, you were never really in love with me. You loved Midnight Ember, the guy behind a screen who could make you laugh. The one who created worlds for you from behind a keyboard."You never even cared enough to really see the person behind all of that."I didn't wait for an answer. I swiped my key card and went inside. As the door closed behind me, I heard a faint whisper from outside."I'm sorry."I went upstairs and glanced out the window. Sloan was still standing beneath the bare tree, her head lowered, and her shoulders slumped.I closed the curtains.Sloan came back the next day. This time, she left a bouquet of red roses outside the entrance. I saw them on my way out and walked around them.On the third day, the roses were white. The card said, "I'm sorry."I bent down, picked up the card, folded it twice, and dropped it into the nearest trash can. I left the flowers where they were.On the fourth day, she came back. Then the fifth.Eve

[Poor Midnight Ember. Her work gets stolen, and she even gets hit because of it.]Adrian sent another message: [Every company working with Flynn has terminated their contracts. The penalties add up to more than eight million dollars. There's no way he can pay it.]Dominic sent a voice message to the group chat. "The publishing platform is suing him for fraud, and several production companies have filed a joint lawsuit. Conservatively, that's another $800,000. The screen rights he'd presold for his previous books are all dead too, and the investors want their money back."I replied with a simple "Okay."Adrian wrote back: [Aren't you happy?]I typed: [I am. Just not as happy as I thought I'd be.]He sent a question mark. After thinking for a moment, I added: [Maybe because there's nothing left in me for him anymore.]A little while later, Adrian responded with a string of hugging emojis.I locked my phone and turned the page of my book. The Eiffel Tower was still glowing out

I stood in front of the airport windows, staring at the stretch of runway where my plane had just taken off.My phone vibrated in my pocket for the thirty-fourth time. Sloan's name lit up the screen.I turned it off.French and English announcements alternated over the speakers as I followed the crowd toward the exit. The air in Paris was colder than back home, carrying the mingled scent of fresh bread and coffee.I hailed a cab and stumbled through the name of the hotel near the school. The driver was a heavyset middle-aged man who asked in heavily accented English whether I'd come to Paris to study.I said yes.He smiled. "Bienvenue." Welcome.I leaned against the window and watched unfamiliar streets and buildings glide past, as though I were watching a movie set in someone else's life. After checking into the hotel, I lay on the bed and stared at the ceiling for a long time.My phone was silent. No one was looking for me.I rolled over and slept more deeply than I had i
