Iris and Uri dragged me into the house. The moment we stepped in, they forced me toward the wooden dining table. It was the same rough table we had used for years, with four shaky chairs around it, the surface chipped at the corners and stained from old soup spills. They shoved me hard, my stomach hitting the sharp edge before I slid down to the cold floor.

I didn’t move. I didn’t even try. Fighting three of them was pointless. All I could do was pray that someone—Corven, Tallis, or Papa—would walk through that door before things got worse.

Uri made a small gesture at Ina. Ina understood instantly. She walked to the door, turned the key, and locked it. When she returned, she crouched in front of me, tilting her head so she could look straight into my eyes, the same unsettling way she always did when she wanted to break someone down.

“What right do you have,” Ina asked softly, “to go into our late mother’s wardrobe, search through her things, and pick her favorite dress?”

My mouth fell open. I straightened a little, even though my cheek throbbed and my lip stung.

“So… all of this is because of Mama’s dress? A dress she gave me with her hands before she—”

The slap came so fast I barely saw her arm move. My head snapped to the side, a warm rush of blood filling my mouth.

“You’re nothing but a petty liar,” Ina barked. “Not just a liar—a thief. Mother would never give you something that precious when you are not even her child!”

She raised her hand again, but Iris caught her wrist mid-air.

“Don’t drain her just yet,” Iris said calmly. “Remember the plan.”

Then Iris turned her eyes on me.

“You see, Kaelith… stealing our mother’s dress isn’t the only reason we’re treating you like the trash you are.”

She looked at Uri. “Right, Uri?”

Uri smirked and stepped forward.

“I’ve always known what you are. A little dirty bitch. Stealing from our late mother—may her beautiful soul rest in perfect peace.”

She made the sign of the cross, and all three murmured, “Amen.”

“Like I was saying,” Uri continued, “stealing from the dead wasn’t enough for you. You had to go behind our backs to seduce the man we all want. That’s betrayal, don’t you think?”

I tried to speak, but my voice cracked apart.

“I… don’t… know what you’re talking about. I didn’t seduce anyone.”

“Do you want to die, Kaelith? Because we can make that happen.”

Iris’s voice cracked through the room like a whip. “Lie to us one more time and today will be your very last.”

She moved closer, her anger shaking the air between us.

“To think you act like you can’t stand Veylor. Pretending you’re not attracted to him. Acting like we’re the cheap ones for admitting how we feel. Just the other day, you insulted us outside—in public! As if Ina, our mother’s last child, isn’t older than you!”

I tried to breathe, but the room felt too tight.

“And today,” Iris continued, “you were caught in the woods fucking that same man. How dare you?”

Her words stabbed straight through me, but before I could react, she suddenly fell silent. Her chest rose and fell once. Then—slowly—she let out a small giggle.

It chilled me more than the shouting.

She brushed the hair that had fallen across my sweaty face, pushing it back behind my ear with a strange softness. Then she reached for the band holding the rest of my hair, tugged it free, and let it fall over my shoulders.

I stiffened.

She tucked a few strands behind my ear and smiled down at me.

“This is how Veylor treats you, right?” she whispered. “Don’t worry. We’ll treat you even better.”

Her hands slid down to my face, cupping my cheeks gently—too gently—before trailing two fingers down my legs. The gentleness died instantly. She grabbed both my ankles, yanked me away from the dining table, and dragged me across the floor.

My back scraped against the cold ground. My head bumped as I coughed and begged her to stop, but she only gripped harder and pulled me deeper into the sitting room.

When she finally released me, my body felt emptied of all strength.

She stepped back and looked down at me with a sick smile.

“It’s our turn now,” she said. “We want to see what’s beneath. Seduce us like you do him.”

I just lay there, crying, trying to shape words with my mouth, but nothing came. My lips moved, my throat trembled, but no sound escaped. I tried to lift my hands, to clasp them together and beg, but I was too weak to even raise them off the floor.

Uri snapped at me.

“She said seduce us! If you don’t want to do it the easy way… we’ll make you do it the hard way.”

Ina giggled, stepping closer.

“And you know the hard way is always more fun. Seduce us now, bitch.”

I still couldn’t move. My body refused to respond. I just lay there, breathing hard, the room spinning around me.

Then Iris spoke, her voice calm in a way that made everything worse.

“The hard way it is, then.” She tipped her chin toward Ina. “Ina… she’s all yours.”

Uri and Iris exchanged a look, then began to chuckle as they pulled the closest chairs toward them. They sat, crossed their legs, and waited.

“Kaelith, that person you saw in your kitchen was not me. That is the truth.”Horris’s voice cut through the silence, sharp and serious, and my heart sank to my stomach.I stared at him, lips parted, thoughts tangling. If it really wasn’t him, then who had stood behind me in the kitchen, speaking with his voice and face?“If it really wasn’t you, then—” I started, but he raised a hand to stop me.“I honestly do not know who it was,” he said. “But if you can remember everything that person said, it might help us understand what is happening. And you should not have even considered what you tried to do. It was dangerous, reckless. You could have gotten yourself killed.”My gaze fell to the floor. My hands felt icy.“I… I’m sorry,” I whispered. “I thought you were hiding things from me. I thought you believed I couldn’t handle the truth.”“You think you can,” he said quietly, “but you cannot.”Kayla’s voice cut in, trembling and sharp. “I saw my life flash before my eyes. She would have

  • STRANGER ATTRACTION    Enough, Mother!

“I—I don’t know what you’re talking about. Please just let me go. I didn’t mean to spy on any conversation. I just wanted to know the truth,” I said, the words spilling out in panic.“Lies!” her voice rose, sharp and filled with disgust. “And I detest it.”Horris pinned my wrist to the wall, and before I could understand what was happening, my other hand followed without him touching it. My eyes widened as I watched my arm lift and press against the wall on its own, as if an unseen force had seized it.When I turned back to him, his eyes had turned completely white. They began to glow, brightening in a way that made my heart slam violently against my ribs. It felt like he was about to strike me—or worse. I shut my eyes tightly, bracing myself. Then Kayla’s voice cut through the air.“Horris?! No!”My eyes flew open. Both Horris and I turned toward the door to see Kayla standing there, her body trembling.Horris released me at once. I dropped to the ground like a chain had been snapped

  • STRANGER ATTRACTION    Horris Mother

A step forward brought me directly in front of Horris, close enough to feel the faint pull that always surrounded him.I didn’t know where to begin. My ability had always come naturally. I never forced it or pushed it. Thoughts usually brushed against my mind without permission, like whispers carried by the wind. But with Horris, there was nothing. From the moment I entered his room, there had been only silence. No stray thought, no emotional echo, nothing at all. It was as if a wall had been built inside his head, shielding him from me in a way I could not penetrate. That scared me.I stepped back, shaking my head, hoping I could shake the fear out of it. My foot nudged the side of his chair, but he did not move—not even a twitch. He didn’t even breathe loudly; it felt as if he were underwater.I began pacing the room, my thoughts spiraling. What if something went wrong? What if I ruined something for him—or for myself? What if I saw something I was never meant to see?My hands pre

  • STRANGER ATTRACTION    It Was Not Me

I stayed awake all through the night, staring at the ceiling and replaying everything that had happened minutes ago. First, there was the old man in my dream, a presence I was still struggling to understand. Then Horris appeared in my kitchen and said things that made no sense and too much sense at the same time. What was really happening?I spent the entire night turning that question over in my head, again and again, until my thoughts began to blur. Somewhere between fear and exhaustion, I reached a conclusion. Horris had left when Iris interrupted us. He had not finished what he wanted to say. That meant I had to find him, and it had to be the first thing I did when morning came.My eyes shifted to the clock on the wall. I paused.“Huh?”I sat up, my heart jumping. “Where did all the time go? Six thirty already?”I rushed to the window and pulled the cotton curtain aside. Pale morning light spilled into the room. It was already day.Without wasting another second, I grabbed my slip

  • STRANGER ATTRACTION    The Unspoken

“Horris, my God, you scared me,” I whispered sharply. “How many times have I told you to stop appearing like that? The last time you came through my wall, now you show up like cold air. Come on, I’m just a girl.”I bent down and began picking up the broken pieces of the plate. My hands shook slightly as I gathered them.Horris did not speak. He did not even look at me. He only stood there, stiff and silent, like a statue that had been placed in the middle of my kitchen.I threw the pieces into the trash and walked past him. He did not move, not even when I brushed close enough to feel the cold around him.I stopped and turned back.Standing directly in front of him, I searched his eyes. Nothing. No flicker. No sign that he even knew I was there.“Are we doing this again?” I muttered. “Fine. Wherever you went this time, let me know when you get back.”I turned away and went back to fixing something to eat.Minutes passed. I counted them in my head. When I glanced back, Horris was still

  • STRANGER ATTRACTION    When He Dies…

“Who are you?” I asked, my voice unsteady as I stared at him, certain I had seen him somewhere before. He did not answer. He only watched me.I took a step closer, and that was when I noticed it. With every step I took toward him, his body seemed to grow. He stretched taller, broader, heavier, like the land itself was feeding his form. I should have stopped, but something unseen kept pushing me forward, urging my feet to move even when fear settled deep in my chest.By the time I reached him, he towered above me. I felt small, insignificant, like a speck standing before something ancient and endless. I lifted my gaze, still searching his face for familiarity, when something on his hand caught my eye.A seal.It was carved into the back of his palm, clear and glowing faintly. The same seal I had seen on the flag. The same one on my back.My breath hitched.“Who are you?” I asked again, slower this time.“I am the one you have been eager to find,” he said at last. His voice echoed, not
