Erica’s POV

Bear.

Had I heard that right?

I tried to force his name out - Friday - but the tape swallowed it whole, turning it into nothing but a muffled, useless sound against my own lips.

He must have understood anyway, because I heard him chuckle, low and warm, the exact same sound that used to make my chest go soft on Friday nights.

"The one and only," he said.

Every cell in my body went cold.

This wasn't the fear of a stranger, or the fear of pain, or even the fear of death, though all of

Erica’s POVBear.Had I heard that right?I tried to force his name out - Friday - but the tape swallowed it whole, turning it into nothing but a muffled, useless sound against my own lips.He must have understood anyway, because I heard him chuckle, low and warm, the exact same sound that used to make my chest go soft on Friday nights."The one and only," he said.Every cell in my body went cold. This wasn't the fear of a stranger, or the fear of pain, or even the fear of death, though all of that was somewhere in the mix too. This was something worse - the brutal, gutting fear that comes from realizing you handed your heart to someone, freely, completely, and they were never who you thought they were at all.None of it had been real. Of course it hadn't. How had I let myself believe, even for one night, that someone could actually want me - not despite my body, but simply because of who I was inside it? I was fat. Thick. Chubby, however you wanted to soften the word, it all came bac

  • Stranger in my Bed   Chapter 22

Erica’s POVA hickey?I hadn't even noticed it myself that morning - hadn't caught it in the mirror, hadn't felt it under the collar of my rushed, store-bought dress. How had he noticed it, from two feet away, before I'd even registered it existed?I said nothing. I just touched the spot myself, quick and self-conscious, and let my hair fall back over it."Is that from the blind date guy?" Malcolm asked. "The one Naomi's setting you up with?"Heat rushed straight up my neck. "No.""A different guy, then?""That's none of your business."He didn't let it go. "There's nothing wrong with talking about it. It's practically your field, isn't it? Love, romance, all of it. You know plenty about mine too."I did not want to have this conversation. Not here, not now, and certainly not with him. "I should go check on the reception setup," I mumbled, already turning away before he could respond.I left the ceremony and made my way down the hall toward the reception space, my borrowed shoes wobbl

  • Stranger in my Bed   Chapter 21

Erica’s POVI woke up stretched across the sofa, groaning as I arched my back into a long, satisfying stretch that made every inch of my body sing. I felt good. Sore in places I hadn't been sore in years, but good - the kind of ache that made you want to stay wrapped in the memory of it a little longer before facing the day.I glanced around the room. Empty.I wasn't surprised. Some part of me had already braced for it - of course he'd be gone by morning. That was Friday. My hand found my mask, still in place, and I peeled it off with a small wince, my skin thanking me instantly for the relief after wearing it all night. I reached to set it on the side table when I noticed something else there instead.A folded piece of paper.I opened it, and my breath caught somewhere in my chest. It was a note. Not just any note - something achingly close to a love letter, written in a neat handwriting. He talked about last night like it had changed something in him.Bear,I don't quite know how to

  • Stranger in my Bed   Chapter 20

Erica’s POV“Tell me you want me to touch you, Bear. Tell me you want this.” Friday groaned, his lips trailing hot kisses down my neck. I felt lightheaded, as if I was being consumed by fire and excitement all at once."Please." I breathed, closing my eyes as my body screamed and reacted to his touch. I knew this was all shades of wrong and I shouldn’t be letting this unknown man touch me like this, but I’ve been so worked up with him, Malcom and Maverick all at once and I needed some kind of release. Maybe if I finally get laid, this unexplainable pull towards these men will stop. Especially towards Malcom.“Please what?” he whispered into my ear.“Please take me.”His lips found mine again, crushing his mouth into mine, lifting me up to straddle him as he walked back towards the sofa. I wanted to yelp with how easy he’d carried me, but our mouths were pretty preoccupied, and I’d rather continue kissing him than compliment his strength. He dropped me gently on the sofa, pressing my

  • Stranger in my Bed   Chapter 19

Erica’s POVBoss.I groaned quietly on the inside. The man practically owned half of Washington DC at this point, apparently including the venue for all of my clients weddings, and yet here he was, trailing behind me like he had absolutely nothing better to do with an empire.I left the two of them to sort out their shock in private and got straight to work with Naomi. We walked the hall together, checking off placements with the decorators - which family sat where, which table needed to be closest to the dance floor, which cousin needed to be seated as far from which other cousin as physically possible without causing an incident. By the time we finished, everything was locked into place.I pulled her into a hug. "It's all ready. All that's left now is for you two to show up on Saturday, enjoy every second of your day, and go build that beautiful life together."Naomi hugged me back, warm and tight. "I genuinely don't know what I would've done without you." She pulled back, beaming.

  • Stranger in my Bed   Chapter 18

Erica's POVWe finished the rest of the drive in silence, the kind that sat heavy, with no one wanting to be the first to break it.I was more than comfortable in it. I couldn’t believe I’d almost brought up the past with this man. And a humiliating past for that matter. The venue, when we pulled up, took my breath away a little even though I'd seen it plenty of times before - an original medieval-style castle, all stone turrets and ivy-covered walls, the kind of place that made every bride who saw it burst into tears on sight. I wasn't new here. The staff waved us through without so much as a second glance, familiar enough with me by now to let me wander freely."So?" I asked, watching his face as we walked through the main courtyard. "Do you think Claire would love this?"Malcolm looked around slowly, taking it in - the arched windows, the stone fountain, the gardens, statues, and pure historic landscape of the place. "She would. This is exactly her kind of thing.""I approve too,"
