CH46 - Dereck's POV
I can’t believe they have dragged me into an early morning shift to help decorate the inner packhouse. Under any normal circumstances, it would have thrilled me to get inside. It would be a chance to sneak off and visit Kai. However, I can’t sneak off with how busy they’ve had me working.
We’re almost done now, but some hiccups have caused us to have some delays and now we might not get done before the guests arrive. That’s when I notice an omega run in looking for someone - anyone who might pay her attention.
I don’t have time to pay her too much attention and it isn’t my place to help the pack anymore, as I am a mere prison guard rather than the beta. However, after a while, she is gone again and in her place, Kai comes meandering in through the door.
I don’t know what I’ve done to be so lucky, but I can’t help but get excited to see Kai. Although I need to keep it on the down low, I know what I need

Oh. Fuck. I can’t believe I just did that! Of all the things to do, I accidentally said Cedric’s name instead of Dereck’s. He has stopped kissing me and is now staring at me in disbelief. I have to think of something quick! “W-what? W-why did you stop?” I ask, trying my best to pretend I didn’t just mix up the names at all. I mean Cedric and Dereck sound alike, right? He won’t misunderstand, right? “You just called me-” “Dereck!” I call out his name, perhaps a little too loudly. He blinks at me with a perplexed expression. “I think I hear someone coming!” I lied. There’s no way he is going to believe me, not when he looks at me like this. I push Dereck off of me and quickly make my way to the door. My face is so hot that I know my fluster will be easy for anyone to notice. I need to get away from Dereck before he starts asking me questions. I’m too dumbfounded to even chase after Kai. He just called me Cedric and then tried to pretend he didn’t and fled. Why did he call me the alpha’s name instead of my own? Is this why Kai has been acting so strange ever since coming here? Has Cedric said or done something to him?The more I think about everything that I’ve noticed lately, the odd question about scents, the more I need to sort this out. I take a deep breath in and calm my frustrations as much as I can. If I accuse Cedric of forcing himself on Kai and it turns out I am wrong, then he will not only know we have been sneaking around behind his back but who knows what else he will do?There has to be an explanation for this, and I need to get to the bottom of it. I can’t act jealous or rash right now. If this is all a misunderstanding, then Kai needs me to stay safe and not risk the ire of the alpha. However, I can't just ignore this either. At first, I was surprised that Dereck had figured out the truth so quickly, but in a way, I’m glad. There are a few ways I can use his love for Kai to my advantage, but this might mean I’ll have to accept a few things myself. For now, I don’t have time to worry about it.A new cake is brought to the packhouse. Though it isn’t the one I had wanted, the argument had gone on long enough and had been bad enough that the two idiots had caused a mess of the original. Next year I’ll get someone else to work on it.Thankfully, nothing else major has caused any setbacks to the preparations and our guests arrive with only a few minutes delay. The sound of people laughing and having a good time fills my ears. I must have worked myself up into an emotional wreck, as I don’t know when the party downstairs must have started. I had never noticed people arriving until now.How long had they been partying without me realising it? I still have figured nothing out, but no one has come to look for me either. I wonder if that is a sign that Dereck has said nothing to anyone about what happened. Or hasn’t spoken to Cedric at least?I bite my lower lip and force myself to my feet. I don’t want to go down there looking like a mess, but I’m getting hungry and I need to deal with this issue at some point. A party would be a suitable cover to sneak off, and it’s not like I can hide from Dereck forever.I take notice of my puffy face and red eyes. Sighing, I wash my face and do what I can to freshen up a bit. There’s not a lot I can do, but I doubt anyone will pay me any attention.

At first, the silence between us is deafening. However, once we’ve found a more secluded place away from the party, she finally breaks the silence between us.“You’re not originally from this pack, are you?” She asks, her friendly smile only serving to annoy me further. I do my best to hold back whatever emotions are welling up inside of me. “What’s your name?”“Kai,” I tell her. “And you are…?”“Nice to meet you. I had tried in vain to get Kai’s attention. No matter how much I called his name, he was on some kind of mission and nothing would distract him from it. I thought perhaps he was going to attack Cedric for a moment, but to my shock and horror, it was the woman beside the alpha that Kai pushed down.I don’t have a clue why he would go for this woman, as they’ve never met before today. Is this because Cedric is his mate? I’m glad that Dereck has agreed to help. This is unfamiliar territory for all three of us, but it will benefit me more if I just accept that these two are going to keep sneaking off behind my back. With Dereck aiding me, Kai will see that accepting things will make being here enjoyable. Perhaps he will finally accept me, too. Beyond that, it means I can keep an eye on these two, and make sure they follow my rules.I had to talk with Caleb to make him understand that Kai’s very important to me, though he still wasn’t all that happy with his daughter being pushed down. I feel so betrayed by Dereck at first, but that feeling forms into something strange and new when I see him kissing and touching Cedric. Jealousy? That’s what they tease me with, but there’s more to how I feel than that. My body has decided that this is pretty nice to watch.I try to pretend nothing is going on between me and either of these men, for fear they are doing some kind of dominant dance to see which of them I’ll pick.
