Chapter 1

After the surgery ended, I quietly slipped my watch into Anna Brandt’s purse. That diamond watch had been a gift from John. Inside it was the most advanced GPS tracker and listening device available.

That night, I sat at the dining table and stared blankly at the spread of food I had prepared.

Danny Young, my husband’s secretary, suddenly came in to deliver a bunch of luxurious jewelry that nearly filled room.

“Mrs. Shaw, Mr. Shaw said that he has an important business meeting tonight and that he can’t make it back to celebrate your anniversary. He picked all of these out for you himself.”

I looked at the dishes, long gone cold on the table. Then, I opened my iPad and checked my watch’s GPS. It showed a location in an upscale gated community.

Years ago, I had been kidnapped. That brush with death left John unable to sleep properly for six months. He thus became obsessed with my safety and gave me that watch. To think that it was presently used to reveal his unfaithfulness…

“John, today’s your seventh wedding anniversary with your wife. Are you really not going home?”

Loud jeers and laughter erupted in the background. Once it died down, a low, magnetic chuckle cut through the calming chuckles.

“You want me to go back and be stuck with that fish-eyed face?”

His tone was casual, edged with mockery. I closed my eyes and could almost picture the scene, John lounging at the head of the table, a cigarette between his fingers, exhaling slow curls of smoke.

More laughter followed. Then, came the clink of glasses.

“I heard you haven’t touched Summer in seven years. Why are you holding out on a beauty like that?”

“Are you crazy? Everyone in our circle knows that John only sleeps with virgins. No matter how pretty Summer is, she’s been tainted by someone else. How could she compare to you? At least you are innocent.”

Anna let out a shy, coquettish protest.

A chill ran through my entire body. Even my hands began to tremble. It felt as though I had been dragged back to the darkest moment of my life, the memory I tried hardest never to think about.

The night before I married John, I was kidnapped by one of his enemies. To humiliate the Shaw family, they tortured me for seventy-two hours straight. When John finally found me, he was completely unhinged and acted like a possessed man.

After that, I developed a severe psychological disorder. Whenever anyone touched me, my body would react with uncontrollable nausea. John would choke up as he held me. He would repeat the same words over and over.

“Summer, you’re not dirty. You’re the purest, most beautiful woman in the world.”

Laughter broke out again on the other end. Then, someone asked, “Why did you marry Summer in the first place? Seven years is a long time. There’s got to be some love there, right?”

The room gradually fell quiet. It seemed everyone was waiting for John’s answer. In that silence, all I could hear was the pounding of my heartbeat.

John swallowed a mouthful of liquor and casually said, “Come on, are we five? I don’t touch her because she’s been defiled, but think about it, what if I had chosen not to marry her and caused her to kill herself? Who would want to be responsible for that?”

“Hahaha! Right, my bad. I almost forgot she might actually die without you. Anyway, she’s an orphan. Being able to marry into the Shaw family is already a blessing she should be thanking fate for. Women like that only need you to buy them a few luxury gifts to keep them happy here and then! Just treat them like little pets to keep around.”

Once the party was over and everybody had left, Anna finally spoke.

“John, I’ve got a surprise for you. Want to guess what it is?”

John finished the last of his drink and let out a low chuckle as he lifted her into his arms.

“Only one way to find out.”

Soon, a series of moans came through the device.

A cold wetness on the back of my hand jolted me back to reality. I had not even realized that I had started crying. Tears slipped through my fingers and dampened the wedding ring on my left hand.

My shoulders trembled for a bit, and then, I suddenly laughed.

I swept the elaborate dinner I had prepared off the table and began to retch violently.

The sounds coming from the other end of that screen did not stop until the sky began to lighten.

Anna’s voice was hoarse from crying.

“John, you jerk…”

I slipped the wedding ring off my finger while remembering the vows we had exchanged on our wedding.

“John, if you ever do something unforgivable, I’ll disappear from your world forever.”

Twenty-two-year-old John’s eyes had sparkled as he answered.

“I’ll never give you the chance to do that.”

Staring at my disheveled reflection in the floor-to-ceiling window, I wiped the tears from my face. Then I picked up my phone and called John’s mother, Deborah Shaw.

“Deborah, I’ve made up my mind. I accept your terms.”

John remained unconscious for three days. In the end, he pulled through. He had no memory of what had happened during his hypothermia, so the first thing he asked after waking was about the snow lotus. No one knew what to say to him. I walked in with a bowl of soup and set it down calmly before saying, “I fed it to the dogs.” John stared at me in disbelief. Then, he threw off his blanket and tried to get out of bed. “Then I’ll go find another one.”No one could hold him back.I stepped forward and slapped him.“John, do you really think I need any of this? I don’t need some miracle cure. All I need is for you to leave me alone and to stop showing up in my life. That’s what would heal me. You’re the one who’s been hurting me all along!”John’s head had turned with the force of the blow. The loose strands of hair falling over his forehead hid the emotion in his eyes.A long silence stretched between us. Then, he said with a hoarse voice, “Summer, do you really hate me that muc

John never left.I had thought the brutal cold and the altitude sickness would eventually force him to give up. Instead, he bought a house and settled down here.Every day when I went out to see patients, someone would inevitably whisper to me, “Dr. Summer, that handsome guy is watching you again from over there.”I started keeping my door shut.Seeing how much I clearly wanted nothing to do with him, John stopped hovering where I could see him.On night, I heard faint noises coming from outside my window, but I was too exhausted to get up and check. The next morning, I was surprised to find that the window the wind had broken had been repaired. It was even sturdier than before. One night, someone knocked on the clinic door. I thought it was a patient, but when I opened the door, no one was there. Only a large bucket of hot water sat on the ground. In winter here, water was a scarce resource. Many poor families did not even have gas for heating. They had to boil water the old-

John had survived his attempt. However, that did not mean he got his will to live back. He barely ate or drank. He spent his days staring blankly out the window. Deborah tried everything she could think of, but nothing could pull him out of it.Until one day, John came across a photo online by chance.[The most beautiful sight in the Snowcrest Plateau.]It had been taken secretly by a tourist. In the picture, a female doctor was overseeing a patient. The woman in the photo wore a gentle smile. Her presence was calm and striking. The moment John saw her, he froze. He went to great lengths to track down the person who posted the photo and eventually got the address.Deborah knew she could not stop him.“Think this through. The life Summer has now is the one she chose for herself. If you appear again, you’ll only disrupt everything she’s built.”John did not turn back; he boarded the plane without hesitation.“Mom, without her, I’ll die. And if I’m going to die, I’d rather do it

That night, the famous Shaw Corporation CEO drove across the city, searching every hospital. He stopped anyone he saw and asked if they had seen his wife. The spectacle dragged on until the early hours of morning. In the end, Deborah had people forcibly bring him back. John kept the death certificate clutched tightly in his hand. His bloodshot eyes had lost all their light.“You’re lying to me. You’re all lying…”He refused to speak to anyone. The only thing he could do was repeat that same sentence over and over.“You really are just like your father.”Deborah looked at the broken man in front of her and let out a weary sigh. Her gaze drifted toward the night outside the window. There were emotions churning in her eyes.“Your father was the same way once, reckless, stubborn. He fell for a girl and refused an arranged marriage, but his rebellion meant nothing against two powerful families. In the end, neither of us had a choice.”At that, John finally showed a flicker of reactio

“Don’t bother, John. Summer is dead. You’ll never see her again.”“What did you say?”John was stunned for a moment. Instinctively, he pushed the butler and tried to go out.“Mom, I’m not in the mood for jokes. I know you’ve never liked Summer, but she’s badly hurt. I have to go check on her.”Seeing the man around her could not stop him, Deborah stepped forward and slapped him hard.“Madam Shaw…” Anna called out anxiously from the bed. “Please don’t blame John. It’s all because of me, he…”Deborah gave the butler a cold glance. The butler beside her immediately understood. He stepped forward and slapped Anna twice, once on each side of the face.“When Madam Shaw is speaking to Mr. Shaw, outsiders do not interrupt.”Anna tearfully held her swollen cheek and bit her lip hard. The sob that had nearly escaped was forced back the very moment she met Deborah’s gaze. The older woman raised her hand, and, at her signal, guards dragged in several people.John recognized all of them.

I did not know how much time had passed before the pain dragged me back to consciousness.Anna was grinding her heel into my wound again and again.“John told you to take care of me before he left. What are you lying there for? Get up!”My eyes reddened as I sneered, “Even after all this, he still refuses to divorce me? As long as we’re still married, you’ll always be nothing more than a mistress!”“You…”Anna pressed down harder with her foot. Her face twisted with fury. Then, she let out a vicious smile. “It doesn’t matter if John won’t sign the papers. Once you’re dead, the marriage will end on its own.”Before I could react, someone behind me clamped a cloth over my mouth and everything went black. When I came to again, I was on an abandoned rooftop. My vision was still blurry. I had just managed to steady myself when the door was kicked open.“Summer!”John sounded really furious.I snapped back to my senses and realized there was a scalpel in my hand.Anna was curled
