Nathan's POV

A call came in almost immediately. The voice on the other end sounded hesitant.

"Nathan, when did you get back? You were there for the autopsy. It's been years now—don't you think it's time to let go?"

The voice kept droning on, but I couldn't hear a single word. I hung up. My eyes stayed locked on their fading figures in the distance.

For three years, I dreamed of Emily Cross every single night. Her eyes, her brows, the tiny mole at the corner of her eye—everything was exactly the same. There's no way I could be wrong.

I staggered after them, watching as Jake Randall's arm rested on Emily's shoulder.

"You've been through so much all these years," he said. "Hiding like this just to be with me. Once the baby's born safe, I'll tell Nathan the truth and bring him home from the facility."

Not only was Emily alive—she was carrying Jake's child.

My fingers curled at my side. I opened my mouth to call out to her, but the words got stuck in my throat.

Three years ago, Emily was driving back from out of town to celebrate my birthday when she got into an accident on the highway. By the time I got to the scene, it was completely swarmed with emergency vehicles. All they told me was that Emily was dead—her body too mangled to recognize.

Her friend, a forensic pathologist, took me to the autopsy. My mother made me cremate her with my own hands.

For a while after that, I wanted to kill myself just to be with her again. My mother kept trying to talk me down.

"Nathan, I know you're hurting," she'd say. "But Emily is gone. That's the reality."

To keep me from spiraling, she sent me to a facility overseas for psychiatric treatment. Three years later, I've gone from a normal person to something barely human. The pills made my body swell up. The electroshock therapy left me foggy and disoriented. But I never once forgot Emily.

"Mom found the best hospital and doctor for you. Your only job right now is to rest and take care of yourself."

Jake's voice pulled me back to the present.

Emily used to hate Jake. She always felt bad for me, saying Jake had taken everything from me.

And now? She tilted her chin up, smiling sweetly, her eyes full of love for him. The kind of look I could only get when I drugged myself to sleep.

As they got into the car to leave, my body moved before my brain could stop it. I spread my arms and stepped in front of the car, nearly getting run over.

Emily jumped. She stuck her head out the window and frowned. "Seriously? Some people will try anything. Now they're faking accidents."

She didn't recognize me.

"Em..." My voice cracked as I tried to say her name.

Jake pulled a few bills from his wallet and tossed them at my feet. "There. Take the money and get lost. Can't you see my wife is pregnant? If something happens to her, you couldn't afford it."

Emily gave Jake a helpless look. "People like this should be reported to the police. Why are you giving him money?"

"Just think of it as a blessing for the baby," he said. "Mom's waiting at home. Let's go."

The car sped off, splashing mud on me. My head was ringing. I thought about what they'd said—about my mother.

For three years, I was in that facility overseas, and my mom never once contacted me.

So she knew Emily was alive too. She kept it from me as well.

I took a cab and followed them all the way home. There, I saw my mother—the woman I hadn't seen in three years—smiling warmly as she held Emily's hand.

"Mom," Jake said, "the baby's due in less than a month. Has Nathan gotten any better? I feel terrible about what I've done to him. Once Emily gives birth, I want to bring Nathan back and tell him the truth."

My mother listened to Jake, her face calm and unreadable.

"Nathan used to have everything," she said flatly. "You and Emily just started building a good life. What's the point of bringing him back?"

My eyes started to sting. I walked forward slowly. They all noticed me and looked up.

"Mom."

The three of them froze.

Nathan's POVI never thought I'd see Emily again—least of all at my wedding. After that "celebratory" dinner, I had no intention of ever crossing paths with her. We hadn't been husband and wife for a long time. She walked in, heavily pregnant, and every pair of eyes in the room turned to her."I'm Nathan's wife," she said, her voice shaking. "Nathan, you can't marry someone else."Her eyes were red as she stepped forward, one slow step at a time.I almost laughed at the sheer audacity.During the time she was "dead," I slit my wrists. I overdosed on pills. I tried to jump off a building. I must have tried a hundred different ways to kill myself just so I could be with her again. The only person who stood by me through all of it was Lena.Lena told me over and over that she would stay. That all I had to do was turn around. That all I had to do was let go.So when I came back this time, I went to the cemetery planning to say goodbye to Emily one last time. I was finally ready t

After a long, exhausting day, Jake came home to find Emily staring blankly at her phone, her expression dazed. He walked over and tried to put his arm around her. She flinched and pulled away. For the three years Nathan had been gone, Emily had been with Jake. This was the first time she had ever recoiled from his touch.Jake was already frustrated over the disaster at his company. Now, this just made it worse.Emily seemed to notice his dark expression. A flicker of awkwardness crossed her face."You're back? Sorry—I didn't realize it was you. The only way to clear up all this online gossip is for Nathan to explain everything in person. I've called him several times. No one picks up."Jake's jaw tightened. He hadn't even known Emily had Nathan's contact information."I've already had the trending topics taken down," he said. "Give it a few months. No one will remember any of this. Don't worry about it. The only thing that matters right now is our baby."Emily opened her mouth

The news from the celebratory dinner leaked out somehow.Soon, even the entertainment headlines were covering it—calling out Emily for faking her death and tearing apart the Randall family for their lack of morals.Internet sleuths dug up everything they could find."Wow. I don't know anyone who would fake their own death just to cheat. And his wife even ended up with his half-brother. Unbelievable.""And they locked a perfectly normal person in a mental hospital and tortured him until he broke."As the gossip snowballed, someone unearthed a video from three years ago—footage of the horrific highway accident that had been cordoned off from the public. No one ever knew what really happened inside that scene."So they just decided she was dead? Just like that?""Didn't they say her body was unrecognizable? For all anyone knows, it wasn't even really Emily.""Okay, but is no one going to ask the obvious question? Whose body was on that autopsy table?"The conspiracy theories pil

Third-person POV"Lena!" Emily's voice came through gritted teeth, her hands clenched into fists. "What are you doing here?!"Lena Parker had always been Emily's rival. Ever since college, Lena was always one step ahead of her—better grades, better opportunities, always winning. Emily had barely managed to wait her out until Lena went abroad. So why was she back now?Lena shot Emily a lazy glance, a smirk tugging at her lips. "Long time no see. You're looking pretty pregnant."Her voice dripped with sarcasm as she reached out and took Nathan's hand. "I'm here to take my fiancé home."The room went dead silent.Emily stood frozen, her lips trembling. "What fiancé?"She and Lena had never gotten along. Nathan knew that. How could he possibly be marrying her?"I came to make things clear," Nathan said. "From the very beginning, if you had just told me you wanted a divorce, I would never have stopped you. Since we're not married anymore. Who I choose to marry now has nothing to do

For the next several days, Emily and I didn't speak at all. Then, the day of the dinner celebration, I got a text message.[It's done. I'm on my way back.]I pressed my lips together. It was time to set the record straight. They called it a dinner celebration for me, but I was never really the center of attention. The moment I walked in, Jake spotted me right away."Nathan, does this mean you've forgiven me?"My mother gave me a once-over. "Good. You're finally being reasonable. Stop picking fights with your brother."I ignored both of them and looked around the room. The other guests stared at me, just as stunned. Their whispers were loud and clear."Isn't that the eldest Randall heir? I thought he was dead.""Right. They said this was a celebratory dinner to welcome him home, but I didn't believe it. But there he is, alive and standing right here."My mother quickly stepped in when she heard the murmurs. "My son isn't dead. He was just abroad getting treatment. I have no

Jake was rushed to the hospital in a panic. I stumbled around and found some cheap place to crash. Thanks to Jake, I couldn't even go home.Next to the bed, bottles of pills lined the table. I dumped out over a dozen and shoved them all in my mouth. The bitterness spread through my mouth. But that was nothing compared to the pain in my chest. As I lay down on the bed, Emily's forensic pathologist friend called."Nathan, I'll admit it. I helped Emily lie to you. She's not dead."He paused awhile, like he could barely bring himself to say what came next."She'd been sleeping with Jake for a long time. She said if she told you the truth, you'd never agree to the divorce."Nathan, you have to understand—my mom was dying in the hospital. My wife was pregnant. I needed that job. I just did what they told me to. I've already quit. I'm sorry."The line went dead.I lay flat on my back, staring at the ceiling, tears dripping down the sides of my face.So that was it.Emily had been ch
