Scarlett's POV

"You should sleep," Spencer said from behind me.

"I can't," I said, still at the window.

"You won't find him out there." He said.

"I know that." I said quietly. "But If I stop thinking about it, even for a second..."

"He wins?" Spencer finished quietly.

I nodded. "Something like that."

He didn't push, just watched me for a long moment.

"I'm just going to check on the kids and the locks." I said already moving to the door. "I'll be quick."

"Scarlett it's-"

"I know." I said cutt

Scarlett's POV Spencer was awake, upright against the pillows, and in a foul mood. The bruising on his face had shifted to that ugly yellow-green stage that looked worse than the original purple, the brace on his leg made every small adjustment difficult. He had been picking at the edge of the hospital blanket for ten minutes while monitor beeped at steady intervals. He glared at it as if that might help. “If you tear that, they’re going to charge us for it,” I said. "You can add it to the bill, I’m already never leaving.” He scowled at the tray table. “The coffee is terrible, the pillow are so hard and if one more person tells me I’m ‘doing great’ while I can’t walk to the bathroom without help, I’m going to lose it.” “You’re cheerful this morning," I said flatly. “I’m trapped in a bed that beeps at me, so am not in the mood for cheerful.” He shifted and winced. “Also the pudding, don’t get me started on the pudding.” “I wasn’t going to.” I said. “It’s not food, Scarlett," h

Nicholas's POV Ashfield called while I was still in the parking structure outside the hospital. “There’s a procedural window before Konrad’s hearing,” she said. “You can speak with him privately. There'll be no lawyers unless he requests them and you don't have to go." I sat with the engine off and the phone against my ear. I did not want to go, not because I was afraid of him. Because I had finally reached the point where I did not know what was left to say that the paper had not already said for me. “What happens if I don’t?” “It's nothing procedurally," She said. "This isn’t a requirement, it’s an opportunity the process allows. Some people take it while some don’t.” “I’ll go,” I said. "Okay then," she said. “I’ll have someone meet you at the entrance.” I hung up and sat for another minute before I turned the key. I pulled out into traffic and drove toward a room I had spent most of my adult life avoiding. A guard checked my identification twice at the entrance, logged th

Nicholas's POV Ashfield’s message came through while I was still in the car outside the hospital. The original file is here. You should see it in person. I sat with the phone in my hand for a moment before I started the engine. I drove to the federal building without calling anyone first, the same unmarked corridor. Ashfield was already at the table with Richard. A single folder sat in the center under the overhead light, thicker than the photocopies we had been working from. “Have a seat,” Ashfield said. I sat and she opened the folder and turned it so I could read without touching the pages more than necessary. "These are Internal correspondence,” she said. “Dated before the accident. It's not a confession or an order that says anything a jury would hear as murder. Something more ordinary and more useful.” I leaned in. The language was corporate, careful, the kind of wording that had always lived in my father’s world without raising a flag. Instructions to prepare the founda

Spencer's POV Morning light came through the blinds in thin stripes. I was more awake than the day before, that didn’t mean I felt better. Everything hurt in a dull, constant way, the leg in the brace, the shoulder, the deep pull along my ribs where the seatbelt had done its job. Scarlett was already in the chair when I opened my eyes fully. She looked like she had slept in pieces. “You’re staring,” My voice still sounded rough. “I’m checking you’re still breathing.” She stood and reached for the cup on the tray. “You want water?” “Yes, please." I said. She held the cup and angled the straw and I drank. When she set the cup down I shifted against the pillow and winced. “Hold on.” She adjusted the pillow behind my shoulders, careful of the lines. “Better?” "A little," I said. "I hate this.” "No one in your situation would like it," She said softly. “I can’t even reach my own phone without feeling like I’m going to pull something.” "There," She picked it up from the tray an

Spencer's POV The light still hurt. Not as sharp as the first time I opened my eyes, but enough that I kept them half-lidded and let the room come in slow. Scarlett sat in the chair beside the bed, her hand resting near mine on the blanket while Sage had stepped out. BShe was watching me, her eyes had dark circles under them. She looked like she hadn’t slept properly in days. “I remember what I said,” I said. “In the kitchen. About you and Nicholas. About why you stayed.” Her shoulders tightened but she didn’t look away. “I remember too.” “I meant some of it.” I said quietly. “I meant that I was tired of watching you look at him like the past still had a claim. I meant that I couldn’t keep being the safe place if half of you was still standing in a different doorway.” I swallowed and the dry catch in my throat made me wince. “I didn’t mean all of it the way it came out. I was angry. I was scared. That doesn’t make the question disappear.” “Spencer..." "I don't want you staying

Scarlett's POV The light in the room seemed too bright for him. His brow tightened against it and lips were dry when he tried to swallow, the movement looked painful. “Spencer.” My voice came out rough. "Where-I...." He blinked slowly. "Where am I?" "You're in the hospital," I said quietly. "You were in an accident, don’t move yet.” He tried anyway. His shoulder shifted against the pillow and his face tightened hard, a low sound left him, more breath than voice. “Stop, please." I put my free hand lightly on his forearm, careful of the line. "Just stay still. You’re going to hurt yourself.” The nurse was already at the head of the bed, checking leads, calling for the doctor in a calm, practiced tone. Sage had both hands on the rail like she needed it to stay upright. Within a minute the room filled with the doctor, second nurse, the soft clatter of a chart against a tray, the squeak of shoes on linoleum. “Mr. Ashford.” The doctor leaned into his line of sight, penlight ready
