Spencer's POV

We got home a little after seven. Aiden went straight for the couch the moment he got in, and tipped his head against the cushion and his mouth went slack.

Valeria looked at him for a second, then walked to the hallway closet without a word and brought out a soft blanket he liked and spread it over Aiden. She tucked the corner under his arm the way Scarlett always did , thtn she picked up her sketchbook and went to bed without being asked.

Spencer's POV We got home a little after seven. Aiden went straight for the couch the moment he got in, and tipped his head against the cushion and his mouth went slack.Valeria looked at him for a second, then walked to the hallway closet without a word and brought out a soft blanket he liked and spread it over Aiden. She tucked the corner under his arm the way Scarlett always did , thtn she picked up her sketchbook and went to bed without being asked.Scarlett stood in the kitchen doorway watching them. The tight line that had been sitting between her eyebrows most of the day smoothed out. "What?" I asked."Nothing." She shook her head slightly. "She's just ten years old and she already knows how to take care of everyone.""She had a good teacher," I said.Scarlett looked at me and gave a small smile.I set the keys down and watched her eyes moved once toward the front windows, then the side ones that faced the garden. Even when the house was this quiet she still checked. I looked

Spencer's POV "Where are we going?" Aiden asked, leaning forward between the front seats. “You'll know when we get there,” I said. “Eventually.”Valeria didn’t look up from her sketchbook. “If it’s another hospital cafeteria sandwich I’m walking home.”“It’s not,” I said. “We’re going to the park.”Aiden sat back hard. “Can we get ice cream first or is that against the rules now?”Scarlett’s mouth moved like she almost smiled. “I think ice cream first is allowed.”The park road opened up after the last stretch of traffic. I found a spot near the path that ran along the water. The second the engine cut, Aiden was out of the car and stretching like he’d been locked in a box for a week. Valeria climbed out slower, sketchbook still under one arm, and squinted at the ice cream cart under the tree.“If they only have the fake strawberry again I’m going to be annoyed.” Valeria said.Aiden was already in line. “You always get strawberry and you always complain.”“Because it doesn't taste li

Spencer's POV I watched the last of them leave.Carson packed his equipment without looking at any of us and walked out and Ashfield gave Scarlett a short nod, phone already at her ear before the door clicked shut. The federal techs finished bagging the soil samples from the sunflower patch and drove off in that plain van they all used. The apartment went quiet in a way that felt heavier than the noise had been.I stayed by the kitchen window while Scarlett was still outside. She stood at the edge of Valeria’s patch with her arms crossed hard under her chest, staring at the empty spot where one stem used to be. The rest of the flowers leaned a little in the late light. She didn’t move, didn’t shift her weight. Just stood there like the missing flower had ripped something open that she couldn’t close again.I knew that look.I’d seen it on trauma patients in the private clinic years ago, people who’d survived the wreck but never really left the moment it happened. Bodies present. Heads

Scarlett's POV The crime scene technician was crouched over Valeria's sunflower patch with a sample kit and the focused expression of someone doing a job they'd done many times before.I stood at the garden edge and watched him work and tried to process exactly of what I was feeling. It wasn't exactly fear, it was more of understanding that the distance between Jason Harris and my family was not what I had thought it was. Three blocks from the apartment, that was what Ashfield had said last night, but that wasn't the right number. The right number was zero.He had been here in this garden. Among these flowers. Close enough to crouch down and cut a stem at the root. Ashfield stood beside me watching the technician work. Spencer was behind us, arms crossed, saying nothing."The fertilizer residue will tell us more," the technician said, not looking up. "But the hybrid variety is already a match. This isn't common stock. You'd have to specifically source it.""Valeria ordered the seeds

Scarlett's POV By nine in the morning there were two federal agents in the corridor outside our apartment and a third in an unmarked car on the street below.I knew because I'd counted them.Ashfield had called at nine to inform us about them. I'd spent the next hour standing in the kitchen watching the street while Spencer made breakfast and made sure Aiden took his medication. He ate half his toast and went back to the couch with the formation diagram that had been on the coffee table. Valeria kissed my cheek at the door, picked up her bag and walked out with a federal agent in an unmarked car behind the school bus."You're doing the window thing again," Aiden said from the couch."I'm having my coffee," I said."You've been having your coffee for forty minutes," he said. "The mug's been empty for about two minutes now."I looked at the mug and he was right. I put the mug in the sink and stood there looking at the street below for another minute anyway. A black sedan was parked two

Calista's POV "He called you?" The words flew out of my mouth ."Last night," he said. "After the evidence room.""What did he say?" I asked."He said the files had been photographed. That the federal case was further along than anticipated." He paused. "That he was adjusting his approach.""That's all?"Konrad slowly nodded once, like he was doing me a favor by even answering."How long have you been in contact with him?" I asked."Longer than you have." He said."You told me it was handled," I said quietly. "After the accident and there was nothing to worry about, so why were still in contact with him?""I said the investigation was closed," Konrad said. "Those aren't the same thing.""You were supposed to handle everything," my voice came out sharper than I wanted. "The contractor, the file, the inquiry, you were to protect me.""I protected this family, not you," Konrad said. "I protected the thirty years of work that would have unraveled if a poorly executed job had been traced
