Scarlett's POV

The Smith case took six hours.

It was the kind of procedure that required complete focus and left no room for anything else, but because halfway through, the patient's blood pressure did something unexpected and I spent forty minutes managing that before I could continue. By the time I closed it was past three and my back was making its feelings known.

Miles was waiting outside the scrub room with a sandwich in a paper bag.

"Lauren said you haven't eaten since this morning," he s

Scarlett's POV The light in the room seemed too bright for him. His brow tightened against it and lips were dry when he tried to swallow, the movement looked painful. “Spencer.” My voice came out rough. "Where-I...." He blinked slowly. "Where am I?" "You're in the hospital," I said quietly. "You were in an accident, don’t move yet.” He tried anyway. His shoulder shifted against the pillow and his face tightened hard, a low sound left him, more breath than voice. “Stop, please." I put my free hand lightly on his forearm, careful of the line. "Just stay still. You’re going to hurt yourself.” The nurse was already at the head of the bed, checking leads, calling for the doctor in a calm, practiced tone. Sage had both hands on the rail like she needed it to stay upright. Within a minute the room filled with the doctor, second nurse, the soft clatter of a chart against a tray, the squeak of shoes on linoleum. “Mr. Ashford.” The doctor leaned into his line of sight, penlight ready

  • Surgeon's Revenge: From Ex Wife To Country's Best Doctor    Chapter 136: The Arrest

Scarlett's POV The federal building fell away behind me as I drove. There was no lift in my chest. No sense of a door finally closing. Konrad’s handcuffs had clicked shut in a corridor that still smelled like polished floors and old power, and the only thing I could think about was the ICU and the man who had not been awake to see any of it. I parked, went up, and walked the familiar stretch of linoleum until the glass wall of his room came into view.Sage was already there. She looked up when I slid the door open, then back at her brother.“Any change?” I asked.“Vitals are steady, they’re bringing the sedation down another step and the nurse said the neurological signs are stronger than this morning.” Her voice was quiet. “He’s still not awake.”I took the chair on the far side of the bed and wrapped my fingers around Spencer’s hand. The IV tape pulled against his skin. The bruising along his face had shifted color again, darker in some places, yellowing at the edges in others. “Ca

  • Surgeon's Revenge: From Ex Wife To Country's Best Doctor    Chapter 135: A Warrant

Scarlett's POV The conference room at the federal building smelled like burnt coffee and old paper. Ashfield had the folders open in a line across the table. Richard sat with a legal pad half-filled with dates while Nicholas stood rather than sat, arms folded, eyes on the pages like they might rearrange themselves if he looked away. I stayed in the chair nearest the end of the table, close enough to read the labels. "Here's what we've got," Ashfield tapped the first stack. “Calista to Harris. Payment authorization, confirming message, same window of dates before the river. Emma’s copies and the matching record from the office photos.” "Then there's the foundation," Richard slid a page forward. "Pre-existing. Money already in place before the accident, not after. That kills the ‘reaction after the fact’ defense.” "Then there's the post-accident cleanup, " He said. "communications, the investigation closed in three hours, the people who moved when he spoke. We have the recording a

Scarlett's POVHe’s still asleep,” I said into the phone. “They haven’t woken him up yet. The nurses said they’re bringing the sedation down a little if his numbers stay steady.”“Can we come see him?” Aiden asked."No you can't," I said. "It's the hospital rules. You stay with Lauren and do what she says.”"Tell him we said hi," Valeria's voice was further from the speaker."I will," I said. "I love you both."“Love you too,” Aiden said. “I’ve got them,” Lauren said from the speaker. “Don’t worry about this side, just… keep me posted.”“I will," I sighed. "Thank you.”I hung up and sat for a moment with the phone still in my hand. Spencer’s monitors kept their steady count. The bruising along the left side of his face had darkened since the morning. I pressed my palms against my eyes until colors burst behind the lids. When I dropped my hands, they were standing at the end of the corridor. My parents.I stood up.“Scarlett.” Belinda took a step forward and stopped when I did not mov

  • Surgeon's Revenge: From Ex Wife To Country's Best Doctor    Chapter 133: The Net Close In

Konrad's POVI set the phone down and looked at the notation under the lamp one more time. The initials were still there. The date before the river. The ordinary approval that tied the contingency structure to this office. Outside the glass the city kept its lights. Inside, the quiet of the top floor no longer felt like a wall. The subpoena would pull the archived records from the year of the river. That was no longer a possibility. It was a schedule. Waiting for lawyers to manage the perimeter while investigators walked through those files was how men lost rooms they had owned for decades. I had watched it happen to other people. I had no intention of sitting still while it happened to me.I pulled a pad across the desk and wrote the names that still mattered. The pen moved in short, precise strokes. Evidence first, then people. Who could put a voice to Emma’s paper. Who still knew Harris. Who understood the foundation the way it had actually been used. Who had been in the house when

  • Surgeon's Revenge: From Ex Wife To Country's Best Doctor    Chapter 132: Retrieve It

Konrad's POV The office was quiet in the way only the top floor could be after midnight. Most of the building had gone dark hours ago. The cleaning crews had finished the lower levels and Security would be doing their rounds on a predictable loop. I left the main lights off and worked under the desk lamp, the circle of yellow cutting across the surface of the files I had pulled from the older cabinets myself. I didn't tell my assistant or made a record of the request. Just the paper and the dates and the knowledge that Calista was already in custody asking for a lawyer.Calista did not concern me.She had always been useless anyways from the beginning. I had known that years ago, had known her loudness would get her nowhere. What bother wasn't her, It was Emma’s.Emma had lived inside the house. She had walked past the study when the quiet men came and went, seen folders that never entered the regular system. She had heard enough late-night calls to understand that certain conversat
