Nicholas's POV

"You don't know what you're saying," she said finally.

"I know exactly what I'm saying."

"Nicholas..."

"I'm in love with you, Katrina." The words came out steady, steadier than I felt. "I never stopped loving you, not for one day in ten years."

She looked at me for a long moment. Something moving behind her eyes that she was working hard to keep off her face.

"You don't get to say that to me," she said quietly. "You don't get to show up after ten years and tell me you never stop

Valeria's POV "They didn't even call or email Melissa," Tyrone said still holding the letter. "Somebody pushed this through.'" "Probably the same somebody who signed my release form," I said. "I'm going to call Melissa," he was already reaching for his pocket. "And say what?" I crossed my arms. "That I want a name," he said. "It's eight o'clock at night," my voice was flat. "Then what? Even if she gives you a name, the officer still comes at nine." I sat on the edge of the bed and kicked off my shoes. "You can't stop a home visit. If you fight it, it looks like you're hiding something." "I'm not hiding anything," he said quickly. "You're hiding a fake marriage," I said flatly. "That's not helping," he said. "You should sit down," I said. "I can't sit down." His voice was sharp. "Then stand there and be angry." I shot back. "But we only have about fourteen hours, and I'd rather spend them doing something useful like practicing." "Practic?" He repeated. "Practicing what?"

Valeria's POV "Dr. Ashford-Cruz?" I looked up. A nurse was standing in front of me with a chart held out, and I had no idea how long she'd been standing there. "Sorry," I said. "Yes. What is it?" "Bed nine. The vitals you asked for." She tilted her head. "You okay?" "I'm fine." I wasn't. Ever since I'd walked out of Ms. Carol's office in the morning with a copy of that release form folded in my coat pocket, and it felt like it weighed ten pounds. I rounded a corner, and Stella grabbed my elbow and dragged me into the supply closet. "Okay," she said, shutting the door. "What happened?" "Stella, I have patients..." "You've been acting weird all day," She crossed her arms. "Is it Tyrone? Did he do something? Because I will end him." "It's not Tyrone," I said. "Then what?" "HR called me in," I said. "A law firm asked for my employment file. They asked when my marital status changed and the court records on my dad's case." "Your dad's case?" Stella asked. "Like the case involv

Tyrone's POV I lowered Belle on the bed as carefully as I could. She made a small sound and turned onto her side, but her eyes stayed closed. Valeria moved in right away and pulled the blanket up to Belle’s shoulders, smoothed it once, then tucked Sir Reginald under the little girl’s arm like it was the most natural thing in the world. “Val…” Belle mumbled something without waking.. Valeria froze for a second, then brushed a strand of hair off Belle’s forehead. “Sleep," She said quietly. "We’re right here.” Belle’s breathing stayed deep and even. One of her hands twitched once against the blanket and then went still. Valeria kept her fingers lightly on the little girl’s hair for another few seconds. She finally straightened up, smoothed the blanket one last time, and moved away from the bed. We left the room without speaking. The hallway was darker than before. Every soft creak of the floor sounded louder than it should have. I could hear the quiet brush of the nightg

Valeria's POV My phone buzzed just as I was finishing my last chart note of the shift. Tyrone: You done? Me: Yeah, am heading out now. Tyrone: Okay. Ten minutes later I was badging out through the staff exit, bag over my shoulder, already scanning the drop-off lane for whatever car Tyrone had sent, when I heard Stella's voice behind me. "Val, you're already leaving?" She asked. "Wait, I need to..." "I can't, running late," I said, already moving. She called something after me but I didn’t stop. I needed air and distance and five minutes without someone asking about my husband or my sex life. I pushed through the main doors and the night light hit my face. I scanned the curb for the black car. Instead I saw Maxwell. He was already walking toward me, jaw tight, hands in his pockets. I turned left, hoping he’d take the hint, but he didn’t. “Valeria.” he called out but I kept walking. "Valeria, stop.” He caught up and stepped in front of me. The hospital entrance wa

Tyrone's POV “How bad is it?” I asked. "Three board members have already emailed," Melissa replied. "People are asking whether the money was a condition of the wedding. Right now the public story is a whirlwind romance but the private story is a contract. If the board starts digging, the contract becomes a problem.” I leaned back in the chair and rubbed my eyes. “Who’s leading the questions?” “Daniel O’Neal," She replied. "He's asking for a full breakdown of the Yates Foundation’s decision process.” "Okay, set it up." I rubbed a hand over my face. "Anything else." "Yes," she said carefully. "Your cousin has been making calls. Kelvin reached out to two board members directly, asking questions about your finances and your, and your decision. He’s pushing the custody team to request an emergency review.” "Of course he is," I said. "Kelvin never wasted an opportunity, when it came to Belle’s trust funds. Schedule the board call for tomorrow morning and tell legal to prepare

Tyrone's POV “It’s nothing,” I said. Belle didn’t move. She stepped closer, and squinted up at my face under the hall light like she was examining a patient. “Why is it bleeding?” she asked. "It's barely bleeding anymore," I said. "It's still red." She looked at it a second, then her eyes moved sideways, straight to Valeria. "Did you two fight?" "No," I said. "Then how'd you get hurt?" I glanced at Valeria, who had gone very still, clearly hoping I'd invent something quickly. "Your aunt bit me," I said. Belle's whole face scrunched up in confusion. "She bit you?" "Yes she did," I nodded. "Why would you bite him?" Belle turned to Valeria. "I didn't mean to..." Valeria's voice was high. "I-it wasn't..." Valeria stopped, cheeks already pink, then she turned her gaze to me. "You're the one who shoved your..." She stopped cold, eyes wide, clearly realizing any complete sentence was about to make everything worse. “Your aunt has sharp teeth," I said quickly.
