My father called at eight fifteen.

I was on my second coffee, still in the kitchen of my apartment, when his name came up on the screen. I looked at it for a second before answering.

I answered on the third ring. Same as always.

"You're having breakfast," he said. "At the estate at nine thirty."

"I have a call at ten..."

"Reschedule it." His voice was sharp.

He hung up.
