Lucian kept his arm tight around my waist as we left the gala hall. The red wine stain on my green dress felt cold and sticky against my skin. My phone kept buzzing in my clutch, but I ignored it. The familiar face I had seen in the crowd played over and over in my mind.

Lucian’s jaw was set. “I saw her too. My men are handling it.”

“Handling it how?”

He looked at me. “She’s being removed from the gala. Quietly. I don’t want her anywhere near you.”

The drive back to the suite was tense. Lucian’

Lucian locked the suite door and kept his arms around me for a long moment. I could feel how tightly he was holding on. The locket sat in his pocket like a second heartbeat. When he finally let go, he pulled it out and set it on the small table between us.“Sit,” he said.I did. He stayed standing for a second longer, then sat across from me.“That locket,” he began, “belonged to your mother. Sebastian gave it to her years ago.”I stared at the silver chain. “You knew about it?”“I knew it existed. I didn’t know it was still out there.” He rubbed a hand over his face. “Your mother kept it hidden.”“But someone put it in my room tonight.”“Yes.” Lucian’s voice was flat. “Which means someone has been holding onto it. Someone who wants you to see the photo of Sebastian and understand exactly what it means.”I picked up the locket again. The small picture of a younger Sebastian looked back at me. Soft. Almost kind. Nothing like the cold man I had met.“Tell me the rest,” I said. “All of i

The car ride to the mansion was tense. Lucian stayed on the phone the entire time, giving short, sharp orders. I watched the familiar roads pass by and tried not to think about who might have been inside our home while we were gone. When we pulled through the main gates, extra security was already visible. Two more cars sat near the entrance. Men in dark jackets moved along the perimeter. The place looked more like a fortress than the quiet home Lucian had built for us.The moment we stepped inside, Lucian turned to the head of security.“Show me.”The man led us upstairs without wasting words. My stomach tightened with every step. When he opened the door to my room, I stopped short.Drawers were pulled open. Clothes were scattered across the bed. The jewelry box I kept on the dresser sat open and empty of its usual pieces. My side of the closet looked like someone had gone through every hanger. Nothing seemed stolen in an obvious way, but everything had been touched.“They focused on

We packed in silence.Lucian moved through the suite with the same controlled efficiency he used in business meetings. I folded clothes without really seeing them. The argument from earlier still sat between us, heavy and unfinished. Sebastian’s demand left no room for the twenty-four hours Lucian had wanted.“We’re on the first flight out,” he said as he closed his suitcase. “Private jet. No commercial delays.”I nodded. “What about Evelyn?”“She’s already on her way back separately. Safer that way.”I wanted to ask more, but the look on his face stopped me. He was already shifting into the version of himself that handled threats. The softer man from the last few days was pulling back. The car to the airstrip was quiet. Lucian spent most of it on his phone, giving short orders to people on the other end. I stared out the window at the lake one last time. Geneva was supposed to be a short business trip. Instead it had cracked open every secret I thought I already knew.On the plane I

I stared at Lucian after the call ended. The hospital’s words still rang in my ears. Heart attack. Critical. Asking for me.“I have to go,” I said.Lucian set the phone down slowly. “No.”“What do you mean no?”“You’re not flying back right now.” His voice was calm, but I could hear the steel under it. “Not after everything Evelyn just told you.”I stood up from the couch. “He’s dying, Lucian. Or he might be. He asked for me.”“The same man who poisoned your mother. The same man who sold you off to save his company. You’re not walking into that hospital alone while his people are still loyal to him.”“I’m not alone. You’re coming with me.”“We’re not going yet.” He stood too. “I need time to check the situation. Who’s around him. What’s really happening. For all we know this is another trap.”I laughed once, sharp and tired. “A trap? He’s in the hospital with a heart attack.”“And you just found out he killed your mother. You think I trust anything connected to him right now?” Lucian

I leaned forward, heart hammering. “Tell me.”She took a slow breath. “Your mother didn’t die just from complications of childbirth. Reginald made sure of that. He found out about her relationship with Sebastian and the truth about your paternity. He started poisoning her slowly, small doses in her tea, in her food. She figured it out too late. In her last letter to me, she begged me to protect you and to make sure you never ended up under his full control.”The words hit like a punch. I felt the blood drain from my face. “He killed her?”“Not quickly. But yes. He poisoned her.” Evelyn’s voice cracked. “She wrote about the pain, the weakness. She knew she wasn’t going to make it, so she made plans. She reached out to me, asking me to watch over you. That’s why I became your maid. I was never just a servant. I was there to protect you until you could be safe with Lucian.”Tears streamed down my face. The café noise faded. All I could think about was my mother lying in that hospital bed,

We stayed on the couch for a long time. Lucian’s arm stayed around me, his fingers still tracing slow patterns on my arm. The suite was quiet except for the distant sound of the lake outside.“Lucian,” I said softly, breaking the silence.“Hmm?”“We need to talk about it. Really talk. Not just the almost moments. The actual thing between us.”He shifted so he could look at me better. His eyes were tired but honest. “The taboo.”“Yeah.” I swallowed hard.“And yet I still want you.” The words came out simple and raw. “I’ve tried to stop. God knows I have. When I first learned the truth, I told myself I would push you away forever. Treat you like nothing. Make you hate me so I wouldn’t have to face what I felt.”I remembered the early days. The cold words. The wedding night when he threw my things out. “You did a good job of that.”“I hated myself every second.” He took my hand and held it between both of his. “Even when I was being cruel, the feelings didn’t go away. They just hid under

The morning after Father’s ultimatum, I barely slept. I kept replaying the conversation in the study and hoping something would change, that maybe the Dravens would need weeks or months to arrange things. Time for me to breathe. Time to find another way out.But by ten o’clock, the doorbell rang.M

Natalia’s taunts had become background noise, and Isadora’s cold stares barely registered anymore. But the ache in my chest never left. Every time I passed my bedroom door, I remembered Ethan and Natalia. Every time Father smiled at me, I clung to that small comfort. The next morning, I was in the

I sat on the edge of my bed that night, staring at the wall like it might give me answers. The house was finally quiet. Father had gone to his study after dinner, Isadora and Natalia were probably out at some event, and Evelyn had finished her evening chores. My body ached from the day’s work, but

The next morning came too soon. I barely slept, tossing and turning in the same bed where I’d caught them the day before. I’d changed the sheets myself at midnight, scrubbing at invisible stains until my hands were raw, but it didn’t matter. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Ethan’s face, heard Na
