Chapter 1

Maya

"You're staring again."

Emily's teasing voice reached me just as I lifted my champagne, making me tighten my grip on the glass.

"I am not."

She gave me a knowing smile before lowering her voice. I did the same without thinking. In a room full of werewolves, whispering had become second nature.

Silverman Holdings employed more than six hundred people at its New York headquarters, but only fifty of us were human. If Emily and I wanted to gossip, we had to be careful.

"I wasn't staring," I insisted.

Emily laughed anyway and followed my gaze to the center of the ballroom.

"If I weren't happily married, I'd be staring too," she admitted with a grin. "Can you blame anyone? Werewolves are already unfairly attractive, and our boss happens to be the most handsome."

She wasn't wrong.

Brian Silverman stood surrounded by investors and executives, his tailored black tuxedo only emphasizing the broad shoulders and commanding presence that came naturally to every Alpha. He wasn't smiling, yet every conversation seemed to revolve around him.

Power wasn't something Brian displayed, it was a part of him.

Unfortunately, that wasn't why I couldn't stop looking. I'd been hopelessly in love with my boss for three years.

Emily caught the expression on my face and sighed dramatically.

"You've got it bad."

Before I could deny it, movement across the ballroom stole my attention.

Brian quietly excused himself from the group around him. As he walked toward the private executive elevators, he rubbed his temple, a gesture so subtle no one else seemed to notice.

I did.

Working as his executive assistant meant I noticed everything.

Headaches had become more frequent over the past year, usually after long meetings or events like this. I watched him disappear into the elevator before forcing myself to look away.

"There you go again," Emily teased.

"I wasn't watching him."

"Maya."

"I wasn't." She laughed softly.

"You really need to stop lying to yourself."

Maybe she was right. Or maybe after three years of managing Brian's schedule, worrying about him had simply become part of my job.

The orchestra shifted into another song while waiters moved through the crowd with silver trays of champagne. Reporters captured photographs of the city's most influential business leaders, and the annual gala carried on as though nothing in the world could interrupt it.

"Maya." I turned to find Ethan Brooks approaching through the crowd.

As Brian's Beta and closest friend, Ethan carried authority with an ease Brian never seemed to possess. He smiled more often, joked with employees, and somehow made everyone around him feel comfortable.

"Good evening, Mr. Ethan."

"I’ve told you to refer to me as just Ethan but you never listen," he joked before his expression became more serious. "I've been trying to mind-link Brian."

"And?"

"No response." My smile disappeared.

Mind-linking was one of the abilities unique to werewolves. A Beta could communicate mentally with their Alpha over short distances.

If Ethan couldn't reach Brian, something was wrong.

"He probably stepped outside," I suggested.

"I thought so too. I saw him heading for the executive floor."

"So did I."

Before either of us could say anything else, one of the board members hurried over and pulled Ethan away to meet a group of investors.

"If you see Brian first," Ethan called over his shoulder, "tell him I'm looking for him."

"I will." As Ethan disappeared into the crowd, I found myself looking toward the elevators again.

Brian had been gone longer than expected.

Emily was busy talking to another employee. The board members were occupied, and Ethan had been swallowed by investors.

No one else seemed concerned. Maybe I should check on him. Not because I was worried.

Because... if he really did have another headache, I'd know where he kept the painkillers.

That sounded professional enough. Before I could change my mind, I slipped away from the ballroom and took the executive elevator upstairs.

The doors opened onto a floor that felt like an entirely different world. The music and laughter vanished, replaced by complete silence.

Brian's office occupied the entire east wing of the executive floor.

My workstation sat directly outside his office, acting as both his reception area and the first stop for anyone hoping to meet the CEO. Every visitor, every phone call, and every meeting passed through me before it reached Brian.

Tonight, the reception area was empty.

The lights were dimmed, leaving only the glow of Manhattan filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows. My desk looked exactly as I'd left it before the gala.

I glanced toward Brian's office. The door was closed. If he'd come upstairs to escape the crowd, he'd be inside.

I walked over and knocked lightly.

"Mr. Silverman?" No answer. Frowning, I knocked again.

"Mr. Brian?" Still nothing.

Maybe he'd fallen asleep on the lounge sofa after taking something for his headache.

Feeling slightly ridiculous for worrying so much about a man perfectly capable of taking care of himself, I turned back toward my desk.

I had barely taken two steps when a deafening crash shattered the silence.

Glass broke. Something heavy slammed into the floor.

My heart lurched.

"Mr. Brian?" Silence.

I rushed back to the office door and grabbed the handle, it was Locked.

Without hesitating, I pulled the executive access card from behind my employee badge and swiped it across the security panel.

The lock clicked. Taking a steadying breath, I pushed the door open.

The office was almost completely dark. A crystal whiskey glass lay shattered across the hardwood floor, while an expensive bottle had rolled beneath Brian's desk, its amber contents slowly spreading across the polished wood.

My eyes searched the room. Then they found him. Brian Silverman lay motionless beside his desk.

My breath caught.

"Brian!”

  • Surrogate for the CEO Alpha   Chapter 153: The Price of betrayal

BrianI had almost reached the doorway when Laura called after me."Brian, wait!"I stopped, my hands tightening at my sides."You need to understand that this isn't what you think."A bitter laugh escaped me as I turned around. Ethan was pulling his shirt back on, while Laura stood beside the bed, clutching her robe around herself. Neither looked particularly ashamed. If anything, they seemed annoyed that I had interrupted them."Then explain it to me," I said. "Explain why I walked into this room and found my sister in bed with my Beta.""We're adults," Laura replied. "We have a relationship. You don't have to approve of it.""That's not what I'm asking.""Then what do you want?"I stared at her. "How long has this been going on?"She glanced at Ethan before looking back at me."Long enough."The answer made my jaw tighten, but there was something more important than their relationship."Did you lie to me about Maya?"Laura's expression changed."What?""Did you tell me she planned

  • Surrogate for the CEO Alpha   Chapter 152: Confrontation

BrianFor several seconds, I stood at the entrance to Laura's bedroom, unable to reconcile what I was seeing.Ethan was there, while Laura stood behind him, clutching her robe around herself. The sheets were tangled, and their clothes lay scattered near the bed. There was no innocent explanation. My Beta had been sleeping with my sister.A growl tore through my chest. How dare he? Knox snarled. After everything we've given him?I couldn't answer. My attention remained fixed on Ethan, who seemed more concerned about my reaction than ashamed of what he'd done."Brian," he began."Don't."I took a step towards him. He straightened, but made no effort to move away from Laura."Get away from her."Laura immediately stepped forward. "Brian, stop."I ignored her."Move away from her, Ethan."He frowned. "You need to calm down."My hands curled into fists."You're standing in my sister's bedroom, half-dressed, and telling me to calm down?"Let me out.No.He has betrayed us. Let me deal with

  • Surrogate for the CEO Alpha   Chapter 151: Behind the door

BrianLaura had been back at the estate for several days, yet she hadn't come to see me.It wasn't unusual for my sister to keep to herself. Even as children, she had preferred her own company, often disappearing into the secluded quarters our parents had given her at the far end of the estate. She had always been particular about her privacy, and as adults, we'd learned not to disturb her without a good reason. But this time, her absence bothered me.Our last conversation had left too many unanswered questions, particularly concerning what she'd told me about Maya. Laura had claimed Maya intended to collect her surrogacy payment and leave after giving birth. She had presented it as something Maya had personally confided in her, yet when I'd confronted Maya, she'd denied ever saying such a thing.I had believed my sister without questioning her. That mistake had cost me more than I wanted to admit.I needed to ask Laura why she'd said it. I also wanted to understand why she'd been so

  • Surrogate for the CEO Alpha   Chapter 150: The distance between us

Maya"I am staying," I answered.Laura nodded slowly."For how long?""Until the children are settled and I can make arrangements for myself.""And after that?""I'll decide when the time comes.""Have you considered what that might do to Brian?"I almost laughed."Laura, your brother made it clear that he doesn't want me interfering in his life. I'm respecting that.""He's angry. That's different.""Perhaps. But I'm not going to keep trying to guess what he wants."Laura leaned back."I only hope you won't make another decision you'll regret."I watched her carefully."Are you talking about leaving again?""I'm talking about the children. They need stability, Maya. Roman and Ryan shouldn't be caught between two people who can't decide what they want from each other.""I agree.""Then perhaps you should think carefully before involving yourself in Brian's personal life again."I kept my expression still."I haven't involved myself in his personal life.""Of course not."Laura smiled,

  • Surrogate for the CEO Alpha   chapter 149: The Distance

MayaBy the following morning, I had made a decision. I wasn't going to argue with Brian again. There was no point trying to convince him that I hadn't deliberately come between him and his sister, or that leaving River Vale had never been about chasing another man. He had already decided what kind of woman I was, and yesterday's conversation had shown me how little my explanations mattered to him.I would stay for Roman and Ryan. I would take care of them, make sure they were safe, and avoid giving Brian another reason to accuse me of interfering in his family. That was all.I was feeding Ryan when Brian entered the nursery. He paused at the doorway, his gaze moving from me to the baby in my arms. I kept my attention on the bottle, checking that Ryan was drinking comfortably."Good morning," he said."Good morning."His eyes remained on me. "How are the boys?""Roman is still sleeping. Ryan woke up about twenty minutes ago."Brian approached the crib and looked down at his younger so

  • Surrogate for the CEO Alpha   Chapter 148: The Guilt

BrianThe moment Maya walked out, I wanted to call her back.I remained behind my desk, staring at the open doorway. I could still hear the hurt in her voice when she asked whether I honestly believed she had left because she wanted to sleep with someone else.I had known exactly where to strike. And I had struck there without hesitation.Knox paced restlessly inside me.You were too harsh.I rubbed my forehead.I know.No. You don't. You used everything she trusted you with against her.I moved away from the desk and went to the window. The argument had served its purpose. Ethan had been close enough to hear most of it. He had heard me accuse Maya of interfering with my family, question her relationship with Tyler, and make it clear that I no longer wanted her influence over my decisions. That was what I needed him to believe. But the memory of Maya's expression wouldn't leave me alone. She had looked at me as though she no longer recognized the man standing before her.I had expecte
