By the time Monday morning arrived, I had accepted that I wasn't going to find sleep anytime soon. .
The entire weekend had disappeared in a blur of restless nights and unfinished thoughts. Every time I closed my eyes, I found myself back in the private lounge, hearing Brian whisper my name and feeling the warmth of his hand against my body as our body moved together.
No matter how many times I reminded myself that he hadn't been fully aware of what he was doing, the memory refused to lose its sharp edges.
One question refused to leave me alone. Did he remember?
If he did, why hadn't he said anything? If he didn't… Why did that disappoint me more than it should?
The alarm finally dragged me out of bed. After getting ready, I did the only thing I knew how to do.
Go to work and pretend nothing had happened.
The elevator carried me to the executive floor, and I caught my reflection in the polished doors. Makeup hid most of the exhaustion, but not enough to fool Emily.
"Maya."
I looked up as she approached with two coffees.
"I figured you'd need this."
She placed one on my desk before studying my face.
"You look like you've been negotiating with insomnia all weekend."
I managed a small smile as I wrapped my hands around the warm cup.
"I think insomnia won."
"I knew it." She leaned against the edge of my desk. "Too much work, or are you finally going to admit you've been worrying about something?"
I looked down at the coffee instead of answering.
If anyone asked me what was wrong, I wouldn't even know where to begin.
Emily let the silence linger for a moment before sighing.
"You know where to find me if you ever decide to talk."
"I know.”
She squeezed my shoulder before heading toward her office. That's one thing I love about Emily, she knows when to push and when to give space.
I had barely opened my calendar when the elevator doors opened again.
Brian stepped onto the executive floor as though nothing had happened. His charcoal suit was as immaculate as ever, his posture straight, his expression calm as employees greeted him on his way past.
"Good morning, Alpha."
"Morning, sir."
He acknowledged each greeting with a nod before his eyes met mine.
"Good morning, Maya."
"Good morning, Mr. Silverman."
His voice was steady. His expression unreadable.
There wasn't the slightest sign that Friday night existed anywhere in his memory.
He disappeared into his office, leaving me staring at the closed door.
So… He really didn't remember.
The thought should have relieved me, Instead, it left an ache I couldn't explain.
The morning settled into its usual routine until a junior accountant stopped by my desk with paperwork.
"I heard the Council gave Mr. Silverman one year to produce an heir," she whispered. "Otherwise they'll strip him of the Alpha title."
The words settled heavily in my chest.
Before I could ask another question, my intercom buzzed.
"Maya."
"Yes, Mr. Silverman?"
"Would you come into my office?"
"Of course."
I straightened my blouse before knocking once and stepping inside.
Brian stood beside the windows overlooking Manhattan.
"Close the door."
I did.
He remained silent for a moment before turning toward me.
"I've made a decision."
I waited.
"The Council has given me twelve months to produce an heir. Whether I agree with their methods is irrelevant. The deadline exists."
He picked up a file from his desk.
"I want you to research surrogacy agencies. I need complete confidentiality, experienced medical teams, and a proven legal record. Narrow the list to the best agencies and arrange consultations."
He slid the file toward me.
"I'd like the report before the end of the week."
My fingers tightened around it. Of all the conversations I'd imagined having after Friday night, this wasn't one of them. He wanted me to find the woman who would carry his child.
"I'll begin immediately."
"Thank you."
Neither of us moved.
The silence stretched until I finally spoke.
“Anything else” He asked,
"It seems they've forced you into making a choice you never wanted."
"They've forced me to make the decision sooner. I won't marry for politics," he continued. "And I won't choose a mate simply to satisfy the Council. Surrogacy is the most practical solution."
Practical. Maybe for him.
For me, it was impossible not to picture another woman sitting where I stood now, carrying his child while I arranged appointments, answered calls from doctors, and watched someone else become part of the future I'd quietly dreamed about for three years.
I lowered my eyes before he noticed anything on my face.
"Is something on your mind?"
His question caught me off guard.
"I was wondering..."
He waited.
"How do you trust someone you've never met with something this important?"
"It won't be based on trust alone. There will be contracts."
"But contracts don't guarantee people won't change."
His gaze remained steady.
"No. They don't."
The office fell quiet again.
"I don't expect this to be easy," he said. "I simply don't have another option."
I looked down at the folder in my hands.
Maybe he didn't. But I did.
The thought arrived so suddenly it stole my breath.
"What if you didn't need an agency?"
He frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"You said trust matters."
"Yes, it does."
"Then you already have someone you trust."
His expression changed ever so slightly.
"Maya..."
"I know your schedule. I understand your responsibilities, and I know how important protecting your heir will be. You wouldn't have to worry about confidentiality or someone using your child against you."
He didn't interrupt.
My pulse hammered in my ears.
"I know this sounds unexpected..."
I managed a nervous smile.
"But if all you need is someone you can trust..."
I swallowed.
"...then you don't need to keep looking."
He stared at me, saying nothing.
For the first time since I'd started working for him, I couldn't read what he was thinking.
I drew one slow breath before the last of my courage disappeared.
"I'll do it."
The words hung between us.
"I'll be your surrogate."
For several long seconds, Brian simply looked at me.
The silence in the office felt louder than anything either of us could have said.
BrianSam didn't answer immediately. He sat across from me, his hands resting on the table, his expression carefully controlled. Normally, I would have trusted that composure. Tonight, it only made me more suspicious.I leaned back in my chair."Let's start with the obvious question."Sam waited."Why does everything keep going wrong under your security?"His brows pulled together."Alpha...""No. Answer me."I kept my voice low, but there was enough authority behind it to make him straighten."We have surveillance throughout the estate, yet Maya was poisoned without anyone seeing who did it. Our security was breached during the attack on the house. Jason disappeared eight years ago without a single person being held accountable. I leaned forward."And now we know hospital records were manipulated."Sam's jaw tightened."None of those incidents happened because I ignored security.""Then explain how they happened."He opened his mouth, but I stopped him."And don't tell me they're iso
BrianI couldn't sit still after Maya left. Her words kept circling through my mind, along with the look on her face when she walked away. I told myself I'd done the right thing by agreeing to let her take Roman, but that didn't stop the emptiness her absence left behind.I needed something else to focus on.So I went to the interrogation room.Ethan and Sam were already there with the baby's mother. The room was cold and windowless, lit by a single overhead light that cast hard shadows across the table. She sat opposite them with her hands clenched tightly in her lap, her shoulders drawn inward as though she wanted to disappear into the chair. The moment I entered, both men looked up.I pulled out the chair opposite the woman and sat down. She looked at me, then quickly lowered her eyes."Tell me again what you remember from the day your baby disappeared," I said. Her fingers trembled."I remember very little. I was in so much pain after the delivery.""Then tell me what you do remem
MayaI left Brian's office with Roman's future settled and my own heart in pieces.I kept telling myself that was enough.I have Roman and Brian have agreed not to fight me for him. He had transferred more money into my account than I could ever spend in several lifetimes, and he had even told me I could return if Tyler's pack didn't feel right. It should have made me feel secure.Instead, every step away from his office felt like I was walking farther from the life I had secretly wanted. Before I could return to my room, I decided there was something I needed to understand.I was mated to Alpha Tyler, I needed to know why.I went to Dr. Rolland's clinic. He looked up from his desk when I entered and gave me a warm smile."Maya. What brings you here?""I need blood work."His expression became more attentive."For what?""I need to know if something has changed in me."I sat across from him and explained what had happened at the ceremony, including Tyler's claim that I was his mate.D
Maya I barely slept. Brian's kiss kept replaying in my mind, followed by his jealousy, his accusations, and then that infuriating answer when I asked when last he kissed me. I had spent months trying to understand where I stood with him, and somehow he had managed to make everything even more confusing in a single night. By morning, I was done trying to understand him. I wanted the contract settled. I wanted to know exactly what would happen to the children. Most importantly, I needed to make my own decision before Brian's uncertainty dragged me into another round of hope and disappointment. I went straight to his office. Brian was standing behind his desk when I walked in, several documents arranged neatly in front of him. He looked up immediately, and something flickered across his face when our eyes met. I ignored it. "I told you I was coming," I said. I didn't know where to start from but I was sure of what I wanted. Tyler might not be certain yet, but he was a wa
MayaBy the time the welcoming ceremony officially came to an end, Zoe and Lyra had already taken Roman and Ryan upstairs. They had apparently decided that the twins had endured enough excitement for one evening, and I couldn't blame them. Both babies had been rubbing their eyes long before the ceremony ended, their little faces growing heavy with sleep despite all the noise around them. The remaining guests gradually moved toward the Moonstone Lounge, one of the estate's grand entertaining rooms. The space had been designed to impress visiting Alphas without making them feel like strangers. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the illuminated gardens, a massive stone fireplace dominated one wall, and comfortable leather sofas were arranged around low tables covered with expensive drinks and carefully prepared food.Brian had spared no expense.Of course he hadn't.Everything in this house seemed designed to remind people that the Silverman family had money, influence, and centuries of
MayaTalking to Alpha Tyler should have felt strange, considering I had known him for only a few minutes, but somehow, it didn't. There was an ease between us that made conversation feel natural, as though we'd met long before tonight. He was warm, charming, and full of jokes, and I found myself laughing at things that probably weren't even that funny."“So,” Tyler said, continuing his story about the couple who had defied the Moon Goddess’s mate bond, “that’s why I’ve been searching for my mate all these years.”“You could have given up,” I said.“Not a chance in hell.” He sighed dramatically, as though the very thought offended him. Then he leaned closer and tilted his head, exposing a few strands of silver among his blond hair.“As you can see, I’m already starting to grow gray from all this,” he said. “And I just turned forty.”I laughed, reaching up before I could stop myself.“You’re exaggerating.”“Am I?” He leaned even closer, clearly determined to prove his point. “Look caref
